Wtf is going on with car insurance prices?

Best time to get a quote is 28 days before renewal apparently. The closer you are to renewal the more desperate they assume you must be.

I've heard that too. Mine's 22/02 so I've done some mild sniffing around but most won't quote too far ahead (I tried around new years and couldn't go to 22nd Feb on the calendar date picker).

Had my current insurer email saying they were preparing a renewal so I'll wait for that to land. Was £286 for the year last year.

Just had this joy with my work van.  No renewal through the post and nothing online as I’vehad to cancel the email they had on file.  Couldn’t log in as I’d not got the Policy number anywhere I could find.  However I did manage to contact through they’re chat and got told it would be £338, which wasn’t much more than last years IIRC.

But I thought I ought to shop around. I tried Carol Nash as I usually have my bikes with them, £407…..

Wtf, I’ll try the meercats.  Took a while to load all my details as again they’ve lost my account as it was under the old email and they don’t let you amend it!!  Anyway, cheapest was Lloyds Bank Ins, £206.  Happy days. And I’ve been with them before.

So still best to shop around it seems.

The Volvo is renewing in 23 days... Last year's price was around £400 for the year for 2 drivers, max no claims, included commuting and 12,000 miles. Wish me luck on the insurance merry go round....

Well this is a surprise!

Excess is £75 more than currently but can live with that. Underwritten by Axa so should be decent cover?

Yet to get our renewal cost in so this may help to get that down.

Pretty sure they all are, hence the need to always ring round every year.

Google any insurer reviews and you’ll see a load of negative. Like anything, people only tend to go the length of leaving reviews, creating threads, posting on social media etc if things go tits up. How often do you see a thread on a forum of someone saying that they’ve just finished a policy, nothing happened, nothing went tits up, the policy was fine and it’s now ended?

In the grand scheme of things Axa are a fantastic underwriter, they give a lot better cover than quite a few insurers I work with.

Hmmm I will be checking if I need to declare the tow bar as a modification....

I may be some what bias towards Axa as they underwrite the private medical insure my work provides. I've had 2 rounds of specialist therapy through them and seen a specialist at a private hospital without any issues. They are paying for Al's cataract op to be done privately too by a surgeon experienced in the type of specific lens he need.

Focus delivery hack insurance is due at the end of the month. No renewal notice from Admiral, because i had it set to not auto renew.

Goc0mpare and C0nfused both gave me just one quote, from the same company iirc (and not one I'd heard of) and these were £1,030 and £1,300.

I paid £823 last year with Admiral.

Went back to the Admiral site and logged on - their renewal quote is now available:

£883

That'll do.

I might get a quote from them for the Voyager too (already lapsed and on the drive awaiting pre MOT fettling) and see if i get a multi car discount...

£883 for a focus? How old are you about 17?  I'd die from some sort of death disease if I had to pay that!

Insurance can be a little unpredictable. I've got a car coming in February and my main car due for renewal so I've just been getting quotes. Exactly the same details (address, mileage, use) apart from the BMW 320d has seven years no claims and the Maserati Coupe has four years.

The Maserati is £50 cheaper to insure

Just got a really good quote online, at 1/3 the price of my renewal invitation from the old insurance company!

And yet, if I scroll down the list of quotes there was a price from the current insurance company offering insurance at significantly less than my renewal price! They can of course shove it up their shitter!
How do they do this though!? I’ve been a loyal customer for years and then they try to screw me like that. Then I get a completely different price from a comparison site on the same car. They must surely just pull their prices out of their arses!? Or are they relying on people not bothering to shop around for better prices and simply lumping a load of profit on and auto renewing?

But, name and shame!

Carol Nash insurance, you are a bunch of rip off merchants.

Haggerty. Gone up a tenner since last year but there's an extra person on since last year. Can't fault them

St150 3 of us on it and fully comp. In the BBadlands of East lancs. £280. I'm 43. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I just don't get it.

You do have to watch these bastards like a hawk. I thought I had stopped the auto renewal occurring.  The website had given me the impression... Anyway this morning I get a thanks for renewing your policy email........  Wasted 20 mins on the online chat getting the policy cancelled. I am still getting confused messages from Esure saying things like, we notice you have cancelled your direct debit.....  We cannot email your renewal docs please contact us......

Online insurance should be so easy but the brokers /insurers choose to make it a faff.

It’s car crime central near us. Constant ‘Ive had my car nicked off the driveway in the night’ through one of these keyless bollocks things on these Facebook groups. I’m not sure how this affects 15 year old a Mondeos but I think they just see the postcode and think ‘fuck that’

I'm 59 and it's a decidedly cooking diesel Focus. Postcode isn't the issue either.

Insured for 'the carriage of goods for hire and reward' IS the issue. I've paid over £900 before now for the same cover...

...on a 2001 pez Corsa C badermatic.

So, yes, robbing bastards

I’ve got business cover, but on it are individually named vehicles with include RS2000 (£45k) Lotus Esprit turbo (£40k) 320i BM (£12k) loads of bikes, my van (a Vivaro) & can basically just add  (or remove) any other vehicles to the policy as & when I want, I’m 58 it’s £900

I had the renewal for the Saxo come through a few days ago, £334, up from £227 last year. After consulting the meerkats I have got a quote for £253 but as the car has done less than 1200 mile since the start of 2022 it might be time to find it a new home.

Posted

Renewal in for the Volvo - £557 😮 And they've increased the excess from the £125 we had last year to £200 for the coming year, same as the cheapest quote when comparing the meerkats. Will be calling them on Monday to barter but can't see them knocking over £200 off the renewal.

Then it will be off to Chris Knott to see if they can do anything but they're not usually competitive unless it's a Jap import or modified.

Here we go then!

My Hastings Direct renewal is £396.67, up from £286.83 last year. No option to question it on the app and I'm not sure phoning up will help either! So, to the aggregators!

mmm OK, never heard of Geoffery Insurance, let's try the meerkats

image.thumb.png.997978132dbba0852a7259439d03c8de.png

Hmmm, cheaper from the same place but fuck not having windscreen cover, especially going up and down the m40 for work... Although I've not needed a windscreen in a few years I'll be fucked i I do.

Now time to have a look at my spreadsheet and see if i can pay it off annually or if it's time to go back to a direct debit every month, especially as I'm not going for the cheapest quote...

£200 windscreen excess? Fuck off Be Wise Insurance, it's be cheaper to buy a new car

You know, Dont know what you are all in about, insurance is cheap. I have just insured the 206 2.0hdi and I was pleasantly surprised, 190 fully comp for the year. Being (fairly) old has at last paid off 😁

I'm 36, not young 😂

The 'go to site' option for Geoffry now says 'there's been an error, please go away', as does a direct quote. Annoyingly, despite not being able to afford to pay £400 at once, I'l be paying it per year by going monthly 😢

I know it was too good to be true, I was very happy to pay it all off at once last year, and I should have saved some money to prepare for this over the last few months but didnt, so now I get to screw myself over! (well I am saving money, but for a mates stag do, and I dont have enough money to save for 2 things)

Priorities fella, like your thinking.

i would also like to point out I’m not actually that old (45) or that’s what I keep telling myself anyway

I'm 35 and can barely get anything dailyable for under £750..... Even stuff like a 1.2 Fiesta is generally in the high 6's for me.

Same boat when it rolls around in March. Only thing I've got in the (high) 6's is a 107. Not ideal for 110 mile round commute

Sounds like house insurance is going the same way. Direct Line wanted to nearly double my car insurance, house insurance with them is due soon. Just had an email in advance of renewal notice, saying how inflation / floods / directors bonuses ( no not really), had all gone up, so that can only mean a steep increase, and I’ll go elsewhere.

I’ve no claims on either , so presumably the’ll get  left with only people who can’t get cheaper elsewhere, I.e people with bad claims records.
What kind of business model is that????
