Kicked the Vespa over yesterday, went third kick which isn't bad for something old and Italian that's not been used in a while. Need to go for a blast on it really then get my ace scooter wizzard mate to give it a once over as the ride-out season starts again soon. Some quite promising runs coming up including two charity ones and some nice areas to visit.

Have put the word out to some people 'in the know' I'm after a Lambretta so hoping to have one by the end of March. By all accounts they're quite unreliable and take a lot of arsing about with but I just love the look of them.

Just in case though if anyone spots a roadworthy (i.e MOT'd an useable) Lambretta (ideally Italian, something like an Li Mk2 or Mk3) for two bags or less please let me know, should have the money end of March.

Mixed bag: went to the scrappy, they didn't have the piddly bit of bumper trim I needed for the Beemer but they did have the piddly bit of door handle trim I need. Only I couldn't get the bleeding thing off.

Oh well, he had a Lancia there (it's like the Integrale but a basic looking model) and the 924 that's been there for yonks is still up on the racks.

Halfords said it's an order in job for the rattle can I need and don't know what colour my car is, though to be fair neither do I :D

The journey home was some what better though: dropped in on a scooter riding acquaintance, told him roughly what I'm after and he has the ideal one for the ideal money. Yet to see it in the flesh but sounds very promising so far.

Bumbling along on the way back I saw what's probably the most sought after car in Chester: the little old lady Mk2 Escort Pop* in two door flavour. Followed from a distance into the supermmarket car park and grabbed a couple of shit iPhone shots which I need to download somehow.

It's incredibly original and doesn't seem to have a single solitary extra including a passenger door mirror. Did notice a little surface rust on the driver's door and the (almost) inevitable) tide mark along the sills but it's a little belter of a car and I think she's had it from new.

*Edit: BMW dealer in 'not as expensive as I thought horror*

Just called them for a price on the missing headlight washer trim and the broken bit of door handle. Just under £20 all in and the headlight trim thing is (supposedly) the last one in Britain so they've reserved it for me. Coming tomorrow I'm told, so if they're as good as their word I'll be happy enough with that.

Porsche passed it's MOT today

A bit of welding on the inner sills, tighten the front wheel bearings & stick legal number plates on it for a quarter of an hour.

Not bad for a 24 yr old 240,000 mile daily.

Scimitars are great cars , If they are cheap because theres no following then all the better for cash strapped shiteists ,

Jolly good! Scimmie passed its MOT tonight, and the Landy has now surpassed its reserve. Will be cutting it a bit fine to get it all sorted this weekend coming, so hopefully the weekend after will see me in my new steed.

If they'd done a V8 Scimitar I'd be all over one like a rash.

As it is, 604 progress is slow, but steady... still on course for Chodmondely.

S Type passed it's MOT today. "Perfect, Sir" said the tester. Already sold, so he is off to his new owner (who is well pleased)

Some tw@t has just driven into the side of the Carina E

For fuck's sake! You've only just got it! Is there much damage?

Smashed all the driver's side wing in, the guy admitted responsibility there and then so that's a bonus.

Just had to go through the insurance claim with it. Seriously hope it's not a write off. I would be pissed off!

Really sorry to hear that GG. Can the damage be beaten out? A new wing shouldn't be too hard to find in a breakers I'd imagine, so I'm sure it could be repaired easily enough, as long as the wheel hasn't taken too much of a wallop. Hopefully it won't get written off but it's a very old car so it is possible.

When my car was crashed into I dealt with the other driver's insurance company directly and all they were interested in was the option that would cost them the least. They paid up without sending an assessor out or even seeing pictures of the car or damage. If you are prepared to accept a slightly lower settlement you may be able to keep the car and repair it yourself with secondhand parts.

Let use know how you get on.

Richard.

Bad news Green. However at least no-one is injured and the driver stopped. Hopefully it won't get written off, they usually say if repairs exceed a third of the value of the car they write them off.

However you'd almost certainly get the chance to buy it back and the VIC check etc should be a formality.

Bumhats. If you know a body place, I'd be tempted to get a quote yourself - don't let them take the car away!!

Posted

I'm totally new to the world of insurance claiming so the first thing I did was to ring the insurers.

I'm happy to do the work myself if needs be, it's going to a bodyshop to be assessed. If they turn around and say it's uneconomical to repair then where do I stand? I don't want it to be scrapped as I've gone a bloody long way to get this car

Posted

Can you take the car to the bodyshop yourself? That's what I did. Sent the quote to MY insurance, and they arranged payment and gave me the go-ahead. It's a dangerous game if they actually take the car from you.

You don't HAVE to tell your insurance, you can go direct to the third party's insurance, but personally speaking, I found it easier to go through my insurance first - though I waited for third party to admit liability first.

Warning: Internet Knowledge forthcoming:

I have read that if your car is damaged by a third party then you have the right to get it repaired regardless of cost/car's value.

That is also my understanding.

A real bummer when you have only had it a couple of days. Hope it all gets put right for you.

Well the man from the insurance people said that they have recommended me a bodyshop in Bury St Edmunds and that they will ring me as soon as they can to arrange something, although I have to wait until the third party admits liability as well (he did that as soon as he hit me)

Seth and Myglaren, so that means my car won't be written off? I can't see them entertaining the fact of a new wing & painting on a 17-year-old motor. I'd rather get a wing from scrappys and respray it.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed at it seeing as I've only had it since Saturday - wouldn't have bothered if it had been the Nissan that got hit!

The accident was not your fault. Their insured was at fault.

You must suffer no detriment, ie. your Carina must be returned to its pre-accident condition. They must fund this, regardless of the age of the vehicle.

They may try to tell you all sorts of shit to avoid this. Do not believe them.

They may also "require" you to use a "recommended" repairer. Bollocks. You decide this.

And as Ian says, don't let them take the car away.

Which bodyshop is that?, we had to send a car to a bodyshop at Bury St Edmunds today after a bit of a mishap at work yesterday. I've had a few parts dealings with 4 or 5 Bury St Edmunds bodyshops.

Cheers Chaseracer, that sounds good to me. I'm following progress with Swiftcover (my insurer) closely.

They said it would be Marshall's on Lamdin Road (Nissan garage) who will look at it.

Thank you for all the positive comments guys - feel a little happier about the situation now :D

That's where we sent the car to today. They should be good as they are Jaguar approved.

TBH the cost of repairing most cars is small in comparison to the bloody imaginary whiplash claim for taxi driver I crashed into, which they paid without question.:twisted:

If they are willing to pay that crap out on a daily basis then they should frigging well repair your car. If they don't just start complaining of a sore neck and buy 10 of them.

I've been fitting a new wheelarch and rear valance to the Cavalier over the past few weeks - it's outside so have only worked on it when it's been dry or when it's been dry and I could be arsed to go outside and freeze my tits off - and today managed to spray colour coat on it. It's from a Halfords rattle can that I had made up last year in Inverness, and although the paint's good, the nozzle is rubbish.

I drove my car today, first time in 6 days. Alternator and battery draining fault have mysteriously but thankfully vanished

Yep.

I wasn't aware of this when my Accord got rear ended. It was repairable for not a great deal of money but the other parties insurers gave me as much as I had paid for the car. I expected them to take it away but the girl on the phone from them was quite adamant that the car was my property to do with as I wished.

Drove it for a year as I had had it MOTed a couple of days after the collision - which is a fair indication of how badly it was damaged - bit difficult to close the boot, which wasn't pretty and the spare wheel didn't fit any more.

Rather than have it repaired and have to get it checked by the DVLA, classed as a cat C and the insurance increased, I used the cash and part exed it for the C5.

May not have been the wisest decision to make, with hindsight as it was a decent car, been very well looked after and low miles. Comfortable, quiet and went like stink when pushed a bit. Only costs I had with it were two back boxes, a radiator and tyres.

When my Rover 827 was damaged in an accident, I was told to at least inform my insurers within 24 hours of the accident, even if I wasnt putting in a claim through them.

Everything was done through the third party insurers, they phoned me up and after some negotiatiing, the third party insurers paid me an agreed amount which included recovery fees and current value of car. This meant my car would stay with me and I was to do as I pleased with the money and car.

I sold the car on for peanuts but still made more than I padi for it, and that included keeping my LPG kit, which I've still got somewhere.

The good lady is very pleased with her golf after it's recent wheel bearing anti rumble makeover and pre MOT (end of month) brake love. Sadly time spent underneath the car yielded all sorts of other horrors that need attention before I can get back to playing with the Cortina, Best buy some new tips for the mig then.

I started attacking my Cavalier with the polishing mop yesterday. Comes up great!
