Talbot Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Lovely! With the worlds most complex accelerator linkage. Quite why a cable wasn't acceptable is anyone's guess! yes oui si and BorniteIdentity 2
HMC Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Just now, Talbot said: Lovely! With the worlds most complex accelerator linkage. Quite why a cable wasn't acceptable is anyone's guess! They seem to have really gone to town with those linkages in period- IIRC the M104 straight 6 twincam had a bewilderingly complex set up, partly buried under the inlet manifold so usually neglected and stiff.
DavidB Posted January 2 Posted January 2 I was in two minds over buying that when it for sale in Chester - mind won over heart in my case. Skcat 1
Peter C Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I bought this: About ten years ago, a full fat 500SL, with what should have been a very potent V8. However, I got it cheap because it couldn’t pull skin off a rice pudding. Turned out that a plastic clip was broken on the throttle linkage, which only allowed about 1/4 of the throttle to open with the accelerator pedal fully depressed. I fixed the clip with a cable tie and on the test drive I was taken back by the V8’s power to the point that I shot past a speed camera and gained three points in the process. Skcat Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Started changing so bits on the 250D starting with the waterpump; It was pretty bad, it said INA on the impeller so I don't think it was orginal. All back on, so I got started with the intake manifold gasket and glow plugs, the intake was on extremely tight. Not sure who put it on, every bolt came loose apart from the final one. Thankfully the bolt grips got it off. Not sure what I would do without those. All the glow plugs came out without any issue. They all varied in resistance and seemingly manufacturer. Although none of them had any text on them, so who knows who made any of them. I've bought all bosch replacements as recommended by @Scrubworks. It's was already getting dark so I just stuck the pulleys back on and left it for tomorrow. LightBulbFun, Peter C, beko1987 and 8 others 11
Scrubworks Posted January 4 Posted January 4 That's one good thing about north-south engines with timing chains, the water pump is generally pretty easy to access. I went for a Graf pump when I did mine. I hope you'll be going round those intake ports with some degreaser and a little brush, it's filthy. Nullzwei 1
Skcat Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 All five glow plugs are back in; Now on to the leaking injector: My only worry is what is the plastic ring that goes around the injector. It's not on the diagram. Going to need to chissel whatever that crap is off and keep the head undamaged! Next job is too change the thermostat. somewhatfoolish, beko1987 and Dyslexic Viking 3
beko1987 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 That looks like silicone or something equally horrible. Good luck! Skcat 1
Skcat Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 I've been incredibly busy with work so the merc has gone unloved with the intake off. I went to out the serpentine belt back on and when tensioning it it I used a bar and smashed a vacuum hose: The big pipe goes too the brake booster and the smaller bit (I smashed off) goes too all the vacuum funtions for the drivetrain such as the engine shut off valve. I'm no diesel mechanic but it's just a hose with a check valve. I gave up trying to get the pipe off so took it off with a grinder. The little check valves are a little awkward to buy so I bought a generic one. Did some testing and it turns out the 33 year old one had failed anyway. I bought a T pipe thing and some new clear line, This is the result. I will probably try to fit it all better and replace the legnth of yellow pipe as it looks a bit naff against the new bit. But all the funtions seem too work again. I managed to find the rounded intake bolt from mercedes on ebay for a couple pounds, as it was so cheap I snapped it up. Decided to clean up the old fixings while it's all apart. Hopefully it will all be back together tommrow! Dyslexic Viking, BorniteIdentity, Peter C and 7 others 10
Skcat Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 I put all the injectors back in and new line to the injectors but I still have a leak. I think my pre chambers are leaking. I have ordered a splined attachment to tighten the prechamber lock rings back down, hopefully that will solve the issue.
Skcat Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 I ordered the prechamber locking tool from ebay, I will just have a go tightening It down, maybe thay will solve the leak. Failing that I will pull it out. At least I found time to change the rest of the vacum pipe. I've got the only old diesel mercadies with a clear tube now. Probably will yellow fairly quick! stuboy, Lacquer Peel, Jim Bell and 3 others 6

Makes putting the fixing bolt back in place nice and easy. User friendly design back then. Good idea also to check the damping is still working on the little aux system shock absorber. Few years back i cracked a power steering pump mount because of a duff aux system damper. Lacquer Peel and Jim Bell 2

Went on a big trip and picked up loads of good parts for mine! Got a pair of rot free orginal front wings, sacco panels, tool kit, drivers electric window motor and mechism, drivers mirror, interior vents that are broken on mine, dash pad, tool kit, washer nozzles, interior light unit. Probably loads more, the guy told me It was getting scrapped on Tuesday so I've been on a 350 mile trip after work tonight to get as many parts for mine as possible. beko1987, Nullzwei, Jim Bell and 5 others 7 1
Skcat Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 After getting this tool and wrenching on the prechamber my diesel leak is now gone! Finally time to go back together. Fitted the washer jets from the donor car and they all seem to work now! Dyslexic Viking, beko1987, LightBulbFun and 6 others 6 3
Skcat Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 I think that's the leak sorted, so it went all back together, I went to the jet wash and cleaned up the block as good as I could. Looks far better and ive not seen any oily puddles under it so far. Took some time to fit a drivers mirror in the correct colour. Much more to carry on with but it's getting better Tickman, LightBulbFun, Semi-C and 12 others 15
Skcat Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 next job was putting the used but much newer bonnet pad from the donor car on the 250d when i get more time i will have a go getting the drivers window fixed! Lacquer Peel, LightBulbFun, Jim Bell and 9 others 12
Skcat Posted January 20 Author Posted January 20 I had some spare time last night so fitted the donors cars electric window and linkage. I would recommend it should be done at day, especially if the window quit working in the up direction and sized up. still another broken thing fixed! Skcat Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 Fitted a new electric antenna this week. Now that all works as it should. Next issue to resolve was the abs light being on, turns out the Over voltage protection relay was at fault. I can see little bits of rust on it, changed it out with a good used one and my abs light no longer stays on. Suddenly the central locking started working exactly as it should. Guess thats another thing I don't need to diagnose now! I Will take it. Pulled the worse wing and it's bad, working on painting up the new ones now! Dyslexic Viking, Wibble, Jim Bell and 1 other 4
Skcat Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 And new wings fitted, not a perfect match but they are rust and chrome wheel arch free! Found a wire that had come free from a terminal block in the boot, turns out it's for the boot light. Now that works, for the first time sinse I got the car. Messed around with the throttle linkage, I managed to adjust the slider that goes too the gearbox. I think it's too do with the kickdown as it never worked as it should before. It's a lot easier to drive now. N Dentressangle, mk2_craig, Nullzwei and 7 others 10
Skcat Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 Changed the oil and filter on the 250D this weekend, it was pretty bad. It sounds much quieter now. Far more refined. Had a slow leak on one of the rear tyres so had it looked at by a tyre shop as I could not find any obvious leak points. Turns out the rim had some corrosion. All sorted now, don't need to keep. Topping it up. Fitted new thicker spring seats on the rear so although the front is still too high in the air, it does not look as bad as before. Finnaly decide to take the plunge and took off the rear wheel archs trims. I did well on the drivers side! I do think it will need any welding (although the inner wheel arch needs a patch). The passenger side was not nearly as good. I've already started on the c piller, never got any photos of the welds as I was in a rush. I've ordered a wheel arch so hopefully I can find the time to tackle it! Jim Bell, Wibble, N Dentressangle and 1 other 4

Yeah, if I take them off they won't go back on! I've seen a few as bad as this on ebay before, but they are normally deep in a hedge. The bad part of this is the inner well has some rot and Im not sure if I buy a panel for that or not!

N Dentressangle Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Nice. I HATE those chrome wheelarch things. Apart from to hide rust, I've no idea why anyone would fit them, they look so gash. Wibble, Volksy, Shite Ron and 1 other 1 3
Skcat Posted March 22 Author Posted March 22 New arch sorted! Been a busy couple of weeks so just been trying to sort it after work! I need to do some small patches on the other side. But no more trims! Wibble, Popsicle, Dyslexic Viking and 13 others 16
Skcat Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Been busy with the merc driving it around, not had any issues other then the central locking being slow. I fancy a change soon so I will try to move it on. I've got it booked in for a mot on Monday to see how it fairs! I think @Jim Bell might have been intrested In it. Will be up for swaps for anything old or weird! loserone, Jim Bell, N Dentressangle and 1 other 3 1
