The grumpy thread

Bah, 7 is about as good as it gets. I actually preferred windows 2000 to XP at the time, but I was a stubborn fucker.

another +1 on buy an SSD. A fresh install of windows 7 on an ssd in any computer will literally BLOW YOUR BALLS off when it comes to generally pottering around the computer, and they're not a lot of money anymore.

On the subject of computers, does anyone have a windows vista home premium disc I could borrow? I cold do with a new/bigger hard drive in my laptop but I have no install disc as I bought it 2nd hand from a cash converter type shop. I've got the sticker with the product key though. :)

Booked MR2 in for MOT at local 'fair' MOT tester centre. Unfortunately, the 'unfair' tester was on and managed to fill two pages with fails ranging from an exhaust backbox with a loose rubber (still supported) and surface rust (including rust UNDER the side skirts), and advisories including the usual relating to 12 month old ball joints being at the end of their lives.

I know for a fact there isn't threatening corrosion underneath as I under sealed it in January.

I know an MOT test is what it is, but testers who fail on everything? If I take it somewhere else, they will inevitably find other problems and not the others so I may as well get the seam sealer and stone chip out and get 'welding'

Let me guess - was it the same bloke who failed the 460?

Si, are your old hard disc and programmes ok?

Get yourself a nice SSD, a 'SATA SSD to USB' cable (ebay, £3), and download a free disk cloning programme from CNET called 'Macrium Reflect'. It's a bit of a pain to install, but once you have it, it's easy to copy exactly your old hard drive onto the new SSD. It took about 90 mins to clone mine.

Then turn off laptop and remove the batt, unscrew the old HD (keep it safe), pop the new one in, batt in, and switch on, it should start and run as normal, look just the same, but run MEGA KWIK!

And all your pics, profiles, and programmes are just where you left them.

I ain't no expert (learnt how to do my swap by googling questions), but it's worth a try, eh?

Maybe a real expert* can chime in on this?

NB.. before anyone buys a new HD or cable, check your old one uses the 'SATA' connection system. I believe there may be others.

(There's no difference between SATA 1, 2, or 3, they are just improved speed capabilities of the HD.)

Usually buggered hard drive is permanent, unless the boot sector has been damaged, in which case you can recover files.

Also a knackered SSD drive is permanent. I'll never use one for anything important!

Yes. The strange thing is the other fella would've passed it. It also failed on backbox and handbrake just like yours. I think if I took an electric powered wind sail brake car it'd still fail on backbox/handbrake.

I had a ''tester' who ALWAYS failed wipers -even brand new ones.

It got so exasperating I left a box full of new blades on the passenger seat -to make a point.  He moved it aside (to check the seatbelts) -then failed the wipers!  I even left the cellophane on the next car -you can guess the 'fail'.

I eventually complained to VOSA -and he left testing a few weeks later. Now working on the  Rolls Royce line, I understand.

Card declined in Sainsburys petrol station this morning for no apparent reason. Managed to find £20 worth of mostly 2 and 5p's in my pockets and around the floor of the car, causing a huge queue and much tutting and glowering in the process.

Rang the bank to ask why. "really sorry sir all the mastercard servers were down between 12.45 and 12.47 this afternoon" - the EXACT time I'd decided to use mine. argh!

My door hinge has decided to part company with the A-pillar. The fact that it's a notorious fault which I knew was going to happen just made me even more grumpy, for some reason.

Roof mounted ladder holder failed to sell on ebay even though it was list at 99p no reseve.

If you are going to an SSD then better to start with a fresh install and then any rubbish that you installed at some point will be left behind on the old drive.

I'm waiting for a 240gig to be delivered as my 120gig is full - but all my pics/docs/filth is on a 1tb old fashioned drive though.

I can bear one of those clicking to it's death but an SSD is silent but still dead.  i.e. don't put all your eggs in one "black magic box".

(I work for an online co. that sells this stuff so see the faulty ones coming back with letters of woe).

Make sure you regularly hoover out the porn filter as it gets easily clogged especially on windows 8.

Don't trust ANY drive with anything important! Assume whatever drive you're using won't work tomorrow and back up accordingly.

That's what concerns me about large discs. This laptop claims to have a terabyte, which is a lot to lose when it fails.

See Conrad's post, above everyone. As an IT Professional, I always find that punters don't take backups seriously until they've had a major OMG moment. Personally, I back up, and then make another backup. Really serious shizz is in SkyDrive, and I do an "online" backup to another system belonging to a bloke I work with (so off site) and he backs up to my Network hard drive.

The CCTV Traffic Wardens on CH4: that mayor of Bristol is a right tit. It's all very well banging on about cycles and fresh air, but quite another banning cars then filling the streets with a load of crusty haired lentil huggers. It's a city centre, not a playground for the rainbow hatted.

I did wonder if that Traffic Warden thing was a spoof type programme; a council meeting votes 49 to 2 against draconian restrictions but the Mayor of stupid coloured trousers can just choose to ignore the Councillors and their residents opinions if he feels like it? slightly reminiscent of a failed Austrian painter in 1930's Berlin I thought.

My friend lent me his old iphone 3g to use whilst mine goes off for repair, but the softwares fucked and I'm currently deep into an OMGAPPLEHACKERZ world.

Slightly scary, Android is much easier!

Dont read this if you had a good upbringing, have any idea what is going on in the world or have what could be called a real problem:

I'm going a bit mental again. Every winter I go a bit mental. SAD maybe and a whole loads of other self obsessed tosh no doubt. Just wish I could be normal ish but hey ho, breakdown central again.

October 2011 quit my managers job big style breakdown took many months to get over

October 2012-Dec 2012 Same story different job

This October I though HA HA! Maybe I'm mended but No it was just late. Here I am waning to crawl into a hole and die.

Anyways like if I could get rid of the voice in my head that tells me "I cant cope", "I'm going mental", "there is no escape from this", "you cant have time off work", "why would you need time off work you only deliver pizzas you freak get a grip try or try having a real problem", over and over and over and over and over. If I could get rid of that maybe I would be able to get through the days. Anyone got a shotgun? Cos the noise of all that I'm my head builds until I feel physically sick and have to physically shout back at it and really get angry to get some peace of mind. Then I laugh at myself and am okay for another day of two.

Then some EDIT whinges cos his pizza is late, I couldn't give a EDIT mate you can choke on it for all I care.

I play a game called see how much of a fuck I can get away with not giving, sometimes I surprise myself.

Was trying to lie on the spot the other week for a 3 hour late order (they all think its the drivers fault) and the words "well the other driver went home dead" came out my mouth.. when in actual fact he went home cos his gf had a miscarriage and was and I quote "bleeding from both ends". So I was nearly right, except the biological unlikelihood of what he was saying and the fact he was happily whistling to himself as another driver came to take over said he just couldn't be fucking arsed anymore.

Samba I really don't know what to say except that you are not alone.

I'm quite a bit older than you (41) but have had "issues" since childhood.

Basically as a Kid I hated school, Teachers, other kids, everything and just didn't want to be there, could not explain it then, can't now, anyway, was told I had to go, nobody likes it etc and grow up/grow out of it. If I was ill of course, properly ill not just putting it on I stayed off, being ill was a Godsend to me and I really hate admitting that, anyroad up for as long as I can remember the thoughts of going out to work every morning makes me feel ill, headache, shivery and cough and cough till I go dizzy, try to calm myself down and go to work, knowing a bad/stressful day awaits me is hell on earth, it really is, I am convinced its my sub conscious saying, look I'm really ill please don't make me go but there seems to be naff all I can do about it, Doctors various say its asthma triggered by cold weather/warm weather, rain/sleet, whatever weather we are having the day I see him or her.

Don't really have any answers, have lost various jobs through poor sick records, been sent for medicals occupational health visits etc but never really made any progress, looks like my current job which I can cope with most of the time will go the same way but that's another story.

I'm rambling a bit I know but what I'm trying to say is hang in there, it does not get easier but somehow more bearable with age, honestly.

An MH issue IS a 'real problem' despite what anyone else might like to think. Reducing it to plain selfishness is like calling a paraplegic 'idle'.

well thanks guys, i would say its nice to know others out there who understand but that isn't right, its not nice its a damn shame. I guess there's no way out, this is it forever now. Thing that pisses me off now, I was doing okay at work happy knowing I hadn't had a day off I though that will be good when i go for an interview for a better job now i fucked that up on Friday after having a fairly major blow out and then staying in bed 2 days.

Friends are getting diagnosed bipolar left right and centre, its scary, because they never seem to be doing anything other than getting on with their lives and here's me I just want some fucking answers but there isn't one for me.

If they plugged me into that theoretical diagnostics socket they would realise maybe I do need some help. And fast.

Posted

Well, if you think you need some help, and fast, then never mind the diagnostic socket for now - get some help.
