Unions? Fuck that.

Spoken like a true private sector worker, Pete.

That's what I've always been, Chris. I understand why Unions exist, it's because there are lots of people doing similar jobs who all want more money / holidays / breaks / rights than they're getting in exchange for less work. Union gives them a voice and they get more power when they're mob handed, in exchange for that they occasionally have to do what the Union says. Striking / work to rule / early retirement type stuff.

That's how it looks from the outside, to me. They do occasionally do some good things, they have done some good things in the past, but I'm not a fan of them in general.

In your work I can see that a Union could be useful. I think you should have more money for the work you do. I don't think the NHS should have as many middle management pen pushers as it appears to, but those who actually do the caring / repairs / servicing etc of people are vital and should be treated very well.

No, I don't know what the alternative is re:Unions, but I really don't like a lot of them as they are at the moment, and I don't like the fact they own a political party.

What I've learned in my new job is that the stranglehold the union officials had back in the 70s has been replaced by health and safety officials in the present day. The list of things I'm not allowed to do is breathtaking. Mundane jobs I've always done like topping up my truck with hydraulic oil are a big no no because I don't have the correct certificates to let me stand on the chassis of the truck as it's classed as working at heights, even if I did have the right certificate then I still wouldn't be allowed to top up because my hard hat doesn't have a chin strap. I could go on, and indeed might later, but I'm too angry at the whole regime that only exists to keep many employed at the expense of productivity and common sense.

It's great* isn't it, Warren? We had a driver in yesterday who's perfectly fine carrying 25 tonnes of pretty dangerous chemicals but can't use a mild form of acid to wash his wheels because 'he's not trained'.

monthly tyre bill: £457. same tyre twice - sidewall damage. Potholes are bad m'kaaay.

Years ago, an ex g/f worked for NUPE (see, it was years ago :D ). The union's day to day business was advising and assisting members who had an often justifiable grievance and from where I stood, they did a bloody good job. It wasn't about mass demonstrations, walkouts and strikes and holding the firm/government/country to ransom and all the other stuff peddled by the right wing press. i think this sort of activity often gets overlooked.

Health and safety will spell the death of the human race. That is unless human rights doesn't get us all first. :|

Union did bugger all for me when I worked for a closed shop  bank. I have no time for them at all. I agree that nhs staff at the front line are abused though.

I just wonder if the likes of red robbo et al calling strikes because bourbons were not on the tea trolley damaged my opinion of them :?

Health & Safety one from my past: we used to use black permanent markers for writing on evidence bags/drugs bags. We'd been on an "outing" with the DS (Drugs Squad) and were back at nick to catalogue what we'd lifted. Bugger all markers to be found anywhere. They'd been "withdrawn" because they contained a solvent which might make the user a bit light-headed! So we were running about with submachine guns, but the markers were just too much.

Ms_Bol’s employer have decided that from now on, instead of arranging with their manager when to have holidays, all staff are now compulsorily having 3 weeks off in August and 1 week off at easter, leaving them with about 3 days through the year where they have any choice about taking time off. Response from the Union: “Sorry, but they are entitled to do that, nothing we can do†f##king cheers for that awesome insight guys.

tis nearly the season of goodwill to all men. except the perps of this scam that we have just been emailed about at work

Police are warning residents to be wary of accepting any unexpected deliveries following a credit/ debit card scam highlighted following an incident in Leicestershire.

A victim received a telephone call from someone claiming to be from a company called "Express Couriers". The caller asked if the resident was going to be home because they had a package to deliver in about an hour.

An hour later a delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. They victim was surprised as they were not celebrating a special occasion and the package was unexpected. He enquired who the sender was but the man’s reply was that he was only delivering the package, however, a card was being sent separately. There was a consignment note with the gift but no card arrived.

The man said that as the package contained alcohol, there was a £3.00 "delivery charge". The victim thought that this sounded logical and offered to pay him cash. However, he said the company required payment by credit or debit card. The victim provided his details and was asked to swipe the card on a small mobile machine, enter his PIN and security code. A receipt was printed out and given to him.

Over the next four days £4,000 was charged or withdrawn from his account at various ATM machines. In light of this incident Police are warning residents to be wary of accepting any unexpected packages or gifts especially if it involves payment as a condition of receiving the package.

People should also never accept anything if there is no indication about who the sender is. Police would also advise that no credit or debit card details are given out unless you have initiated a purchase or transaction and know it is from a trustworthy source.

I dont live in Leicestershite but do wish these kind of scamsters a miserable existence where they are violated in their sleep by the spirit of J Savile by night and showered with skunt shite by day and every day.

thats got fuck all to do with H & S.:roll:

on the subject of H & S i feel i must defend it, in principle;

health and safety in heavy industry has totally changed workers lives for the better, and most of the benefits have come not from 'greedy, meddling unions, grr we luv thatcher' but from the health and safety managers directly employed by the company. UK & EU law states ( and judges have rules on this several times) that the H & S manager is legally responsible for employees well-being. i.e. if someone dies through failings in H & S procedure then the employer and the H & S manager are going to jail, and some have.

this trickle down effect of H & S practice from heavy industry to associated (and un-associated) trades means that lots of crazy stories can be told, but ultimately these silly rules save lives

30 seconds googling will get you plenty of examples of H & S failures that cost lives, its very very foolish to moan about it H & S regulations may save the lives of your family and future family.

The rather excellent Toyota GT86 advert gets banned by the ASA after TWO complaints

http://pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.as ... %3A+banned!

The number of motoring web fora I've seen this subject crop up on, I'm very inclined to believe the two people who 'complained' work for Toyota's ad agency.

Cynical, moi?..... :twisted::roll:

At lunchtime I wandered down to the polling station to vote for my favourite policeman. As usual staff outnumbered voters five to one (in that there were five members of staff) and as usual they'd set up enough voting booths for everyone in the area to vote at once. Hardly seems worth closing the school for a day.

Election Predictions:

Turnout: five or six

Golf pencils stolen: five or six

Completely forgot about that. This police election seems rather pointless to me- what next, voting for the MD of the DVLA?

That Toyota advert is from ages ago isn't it? When I saw it I remember thinking a sporty Toyota was about as "The Man" as it gets.

The national average salary is apparently £24k... I've finally decided to work out what my salary would be at the current rate of pay and it's a paltry £12.8k... no wonder I'm finding it hard to make ends meet lately! It's barely any better than when I was self employed, only now I'm massively time poor in addition.

Also, the Maestro tops out at a miserable 85mph, downhill, with the pedal against the floor. It makes overtaking a challenge.

There was once a print advert for Lada where they asked whether you would rather travel in the lap of luxury (Lada) or beat the lap record (Maestro). I doubt if any copies survive because they will all have had coffee sprayed on them.

Edit- not Lada, FSO

I voted today. Thought we were having a council election too so went along and when I discovered that it was just the one for the bizzies I voted for the independent one.

The basic problem with all H&S legislation is that it is drafted to try and mitigate against complete mongs harming themselves. I've done a few H&S courses, and the phrase to remember is "practicably possible". As long as you ensure that most people with the IQ slightly higher than a toaster are catered for, the law is pretty much on your side. The problems start when some jobsworth with a spreadsheet to fill out decides that all staff must complete a course in how to make a cuppa without a] scalding themselves b] electrocuting themselves c] drowning.
