Ebay grump.

Sold the Whale, made a tidy sum, had contact from the buyer, organised for him to Megabus it up Saturday morning, talked to him Friday night to check arrangements.

I worked Friday night until 7am, so decided to stay up and ready the car for collection, which involved finding my next car, lining insurance up etcetc.

Midday comes and goes, the chap doesn't ring me, left me totally in the lurch meaning I left the chap with the Volvo I wanted to buy in the lurch.

He's not answered his phone/text/email/eBay messages, so I opened a dispute, relisted the thing on Ebay, wrote ads for CarandClassic and Gumtree etcetc.

20mins ago he text me, flippant apology, mentioned a 'family emergency' and how he'd 'left his phone at home' (funny how the battery didn't die with the 50+ missed calls from me)

Now he wants to pay a paypal deposit and collect it next week, but possibly Friday if he can get a lift up....

We've done some digging around, and it seems he's from Peckham, and seems to be a bit of a beater-vest wearing Pikey...

Should I give him the benefit of the doubt? Or stick to my guns, sack him off and hope that another buyer comes along?

I'd just say "it's for sale until your money is in my hand." I'd demand a deposit if he's that keen to actually have it. I had a deposit on the Bluey within the 24hrs I'd stipulated in my Ebay ad.

Oh look, the check engine light is now on all the time in the Punto and is reading as an injector fault. The steering failure light has also come on a few times.

GREAT. SUPER. EXCELLENT.

This car was given to me by my Granddad who had it from new, and without wishing to sound ungrateful I'm expected to keep it for a while, otherwise I would have flogged it straight away and bought another retro. He never had a problem in 10 years, I've had it less than a month......

Got a brand new SSD to make my laptop faster. Can I find the boot /driver CDs? Can I fuck.

Alright, then, I'll stick it on the 2005 machine I found in my parents' place. I'll use an on-the-fly Ubuntu install to make sure it works and see whether it makes the ancient relic any faster. Just how easy is that- there's a special panel that allows access to the HDD caddy through unscrewing just 2 screws! The caddy came out no problem, antistatic bag for new SSD opened...and then an hour spent trying to separate the old disk from the screws holding the bastard to the caddy. Pliers didn't help either. If only hard discs could get hammered...:evil:

Boot discs? Can you not just clone your existing windows install onto the new SSD?

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt but tell him you want a £50 non-refundable deposit.

I did think of that, however I don't trust my luck (or Windows) enough to risk it!

My only issue with that Billy, is, if someone else should shows up, cash in hand, where would I stand if I sold it from under him after he'd put a deposit on it?

Posted

It'd be poor form to sell it if he's paid a deposit. As Monsieur ballsack said in the Ebay thread though, chances are you won't get a deposit, so you're free to sell. If he actually does pay then hopefully it suggests he's willing to go through with it.

Posted

Just say to him it's a fifty (or whatever) quid non-refundable deposit and you want the rest cash in hand by the next Sunday after the Friday he said he'd collect.

Meanwhile if any interested parties ask about it tell them you still have the car but are away on business until the Monday after the above.

That way if he doesn't show and you find another buyer you can either give him his deposit back or tell him to get to f*ck.

Double sided tape, blu tack, they aren't that heavy. Throw the caddy out, sorted.

Oh and on a grump, Clive Dunn's died.

Clive Dunn?

He was one of those blokes that you could easily think must have passed away yonks ago, but he just seemed to keep going. Didn't he move to Spain in the 1970's? What a shame he died anyhow, his best known television character still remains one of my favourite ever.

Posted

I was shocked as I thought he must have passed away ages ago. He must just have been 50 odd when he was in Dad's army.

Posted

he retired to Portugal in the mid-seventies

I think everyone thought he had died years ago. What I want to know is who did die if he was still alive?

Posted

Never mind that, how many cars did he sell a month?

What happened to the gold Montego advert? Did the poster throw a strop?

Posted

Trigger offered him £450 for it, he spied his arse then pulled the thread.

Posted

yep - I went back to look and the whole thread had gone - shame, I may have wanted to buy a Montego without a working heater in the depths of winter sold by someone who can't see the point that a heater may just be a prerequisite for driving the car between November and March.

Idiots man. Folk get so into their old cars that they lose track of reality, £800 for a 1.6 monty with faults that stop it even being a credible daily driver and she goes off on one when someone questions it, give me strength.

British TdF-winning cyclist gets put in hospital by someone pulling out of a petrol station while out on a training ride is today's grump...I'll just pop me hi-viz t-shirt on to cycle over and take a look at a P-reg Fiesta for sale locally at £100.
