Bosch cordless power tools. Shit. In the last twelvemonth I have had my hedge clippers, drill and now strimmer pack up. That's over £400 quid of gear that hasn't had a great deal of use. The battery for the strimmer has packed up, and they want £87 for a new one. They can Fuck Off. Petrol strimmer FTW. If I didn't already have one, £87 would get me a pez jobbie, and I'd have change. Beware also Atko and Qualcast, which are badge engineered Bosch. Cheap Far East shit components from what I've been able to determine.

Shit at work. I'm making errors because my mind is on other things but my Mum's death/ court case next week/ impending inquest is an "excuse". Apparently some other guys mum died and he was fine about it.

Posted

Also I'm led to believe Churchill are part of the same company as DIRECT LIARS.

*Edit: that's awful, Tim. Everyone grieves/reacts differently, so for your place to sort of imply there's an industry standard for this sort of thing really does hammer home what a bunch of hopeless, hateful twats they obviously are.

Here's to hoping something else comes along very soon and you can tell them to shove this job somewhere unpleasant.

Posted

I like the job and don't want to leave! They were great at the start, but 6 months after my Mum's accident I guess most have forgotten about it. Got the court hearing to go to on Tuesday and work just don't seem to give a flying shit about any of it anymore. I've been told that i'm up for a disciplinary/sacking if I don't sort it out. Obv hearing that shows I have the full support of my employers and helps me to cope mentally-NOT.

Posted

You need to find a way of letting them know, even if that way is taking a day off sick to get a cover letter from your doctor explaining you're still greiving and have a lot on your plate. It sounds remarkably insensitive of your employers that they would just forget.

Posted

Have you considered going to the quack's and having him sign you off for stress? At least for the duration of the hearing. You really don't need the weight of worry on your shoulders about work too.

I don't profess to know a great deal about you, but from what I've read, you are a good chap LT, it is important that you give yourself a little time and space, I have seen a colleague carry on past breaking point and it is a LONG road back from that.

And, as that was uncharacteristic of me to post something sensible, I'd like to sign off with bum, fart, piss and cocksnot, so the balance is restored :D

I'm already on "happy" pills which seem to be doing the trick but make me quite drowsy, along with other side effects. I'm booked in at the docs tomorrow afternoon for a routine update and to tell him how i'm getting on (which isn't that great ATM).

I had a couple of weeks off with stress relating to the accident a few months ago. Mrs Lankytim thinks I should have another week... but I'd still have to go back to work eventually. I think any more time off will just make the situation more awkward for me when I return.

Posted

You have to face going back at some point, Tim, no denying it. You also (and more importantly) have to face feeling better* at some point and knowing that you're in a better frame of mind to return to work.

From what you've said here alone I'd have thought a fortnight off minimum would be the best bet: get next week over with and then spend some time with your missus/little one perhaps.

If you go in next week you've got work and the court case on your mind, I'd humbly suggest just concentrating on one of those (the latter, obv) is probably the best thing. Can you go in work tomorrow and sound them out, I'd expect anyone with even a morsel of compassion there would at least give you some pointers as to how they see this stupid 'disciplinary' going. Sounds really corny but it might come to a choice between your health and your job, and whilst internet talk is cheap I know which I'd prefer to have.

*That bit about feeling better sounds rubbish sorry, just sort of hard to put into words.

Posted

Sorry to hear that all, Tim. Perhaps you can illustrate your greivances to The Management by means of Pie Charts and Venn Diagrams to help them understand.

My grump tonight is about feeling old at 31. Sounds ridiculous, I know. We have a 16 year old at work doing a training placement and she's starting in the Service dept. It's a pleasant day so we put the wireless on for some choonz. I tell her; with some weight, authority and gravitas that BBC6 is the official station of our office and the dial must not be moved on pain of disembowelment. She indicates that something called Radio 1 is her preference. That's fine; the same was true of me for a decade and a half.

She then continued to say that "it's all just talking"; fair enough, at that moment Radcliffe and Maconie were bantering away energetically. I quipped "and I supposeon Radio 1 it's all about the music?". I assured her that the next song to be played would be an absolute blinder. It was, too.

KLF: What time is love? Natch, she had never heard of it. I tried her on The Prodigy and she said that yes, of course she's heard of The Prodigy, everybody has, but she'd never listen to it out of choice because ITS OLD.

Now, what concerns me is that, in 1994, circa the release of Music For The Jilted Generation, I actually had to open my mind a bit to accept that album and eventually love it. I was raised on prog and grew up on indie and Manchester Rave, and The Prodigy were doing stuff that couldn't quite be pigeonholed. It was challenging.

Eighteen (yes, really) years later, what was cutting edge is now dismissed by todays youth as irrelevant or boring.

I know it's a perpetual cycle and it's been like this forever, but today was the first time it hit me.

Bleh.

Tim, talk to them and let them know of the issues. See whether you can get some annual leave, too. I'm sure they will be more sympathetic if you're more open about what you're going through.

As for music tastes giving away one's age, I feel the need to thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I don't seek out anything that's popular (even if I have no problem with mainstream music) Whether it's La Pena Negra singing about the Spanish housing bubble, the more atmospheric Mantra Above the Spotless Melt Moon (yes, that's a band name), or some seriously trashy Greek bellydance stuff, it's things that most people haven't heard of, and I can get away with being different in a shite way.

I've been a bit grumpy over the past few days over the hurdles that I've had to overcome in order to submit an application for a PhD. They wanted all sorts of silly stuff, including exam results for English language ability. Never mind the fact that I've got a Master's degree, which was taught in English, from the same institution! At least I've managed to get references from a couple of senior professors within the faculty, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get selected and enjoy 3 years of freedom from going to unsuccessful job interviews week after week.

When I'm doing an indicated 55-56 trying to maximise my MPG, I keep getting overtaken by artics doing about 3-4 mph more. OTOH, I hardly ever have to overtake anyone.

Great! nice bit of elephant racing!!

It does get right on my feckin tits epecially when it takes a Moronsons truck 3.5 miles to get past a Tesblows rig on the only stretch of dual - which is exactly 3.5 miles long - on an other wise twisty bugger of a busy road.

LT, have they ever heard of "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder"? Have you? This sounds bang on for it. You need time off without further stress, or you may risk having to take your Employers to a Tribunal and take lots of money off them, and that wouldn't at all do. No, not one bit. Not even for buying more chod and waving two fingers at the place as you drive past. You have a clear case against them, especially if you can get the threats in writing of some kind.

Posted

LT, I think that there's not much more to add to Cav's excellent advice. Hope it goes well at the doc's. Don't be afraid to get time off and don't think about how you'll feel when you go back. This is now and that will be then and you can tackle it then. Good luck.

Re the pious, must have been piloted by someone who really did not want to be in there and maybe got fed up with a) other santimonious shithead pious owners congratulating him/her on choice of vehicle and B) looks of utter disgust from every other motorist on the road!

I would rather watch John Prescott wipe his arse on my favourite shirt than let a pious into traffic.

Take it up to 120. You should lose a Prius at that speed.

Probably some nugget who's forced to use one as a company car while his Insignia's in the garage..

Or some breast-feeding earth-mother late for a colonic irrigation. <- see how many stereotypes you can get in...

I keep that for BMW owners.

What you've encountered there is an idiot  I think I had an equally closed mind at 16, some grow out of it and the rest become commercial radio listeners.

She does have a point about the talking, although Radio 1 is one of the worst offenders. When I had a car radio I was forever yelling 'shut up' and stabbing at the 'seek' button. I just want to hear some music, why would I tune in to hear office workers greeting their colleagues by phoning into a radio station? I don't need to hear a minute long jingle for your station, especially if it's about how you only play the best music (meaning the same fifteen records as all the other local stations).

I can't criticise Radios 4 & 5 for talking too much, but I can criticise Five Live for "we're going to have to stop this interesting discussion because the chief of some police force is about to start his press conference" followed by five minutes of live chair shuffling and microphone adjustments before a fucking boring press conference where you can't hear the questions being asked. It's a press conference so that you can report on what was said, you dumb shits.

The incompetence of the National Union of Students is making me grumpy at the moment. My card expired at the end of the month, a fact they've been aware of since this time last year so when did they send the renewal notice? 6:45pm on the expiry date FFS. Not only that, I've now lost out big time by renewing earlier in the week because I needed the card - it cost me £12 then and could only be delivered to the uni but the price has now been reduced to £5 and I could have it delivered to my door. I walked all the way to the post room yesterday only to find it still hadn't arrived, today is the last day of term and the post room is now closed for 3 weeks. If it wasn't for the fortunate coincidence that my sister has just got a job at the very same uni my card would now be stuck there so I can't use it over the holiday. The NUS website says they're experiencing 'some teething troubles' which must be a euphemism for 'total balls up' as they couldn't have done things worse if they'd tried. They've sent an email asking for feedback so when my card finally turns up they'll be regretting that!

On the plus side, a chat with the postman today about his shite cars cheered me up - I told him about this place so he may be along later.

Been there, done that Jon. World of pain, not much fun, only people with beard and/or facial tics will sympathise. I got back into Japanese motorcycles instead. Two strokers at first (back to a Yam RD250LC RINGDINGDING BAAAAAADIN POP) then an RG500 (think a RS2000 Escort in terms of what it's worth now) and then I sold out and got a re-ECU'd JDM 900RR FireBlade. You don't overtake cars on a 'Blade, you overtake entire traffic jams.

This is jolly good fun, and I commend it to my esteemed colleague Watanabe.

Was the Prius a sort of Blueish colour piloted by some oldish bloke? This happend to me! A few months ago, whilst travelling back from a launch party at some McClaren/Rolls-Royce showroom somewhere on the outskirts of Birmingham I was driving along the motorway towards home. As we got through some speed restricted part of the motorway I passed a Blueish-coloured Prius who overtook me and sat in front of me doing the same speed, he obviously didnt want some crappy old Rover overtaking him so he he passed me again and sat in front of me. I didnt think much of it and as the speed restriction ended alot of drivers were taking thier time getting up to speed, I sped up and got onto the outside lane, however I also seem to have the same bastard Prius beside me trying to match my speed. I'm tired of this of this dickhead trying it on so I floored it to about 100+ mph, Prius-boy still trying to get ahead me (despite now being behind me) as my turn-off comes along I indicate and pull off the motorway, I notice he slows down and thats the last I see of him.

I dont get it, whats it all about?

Tim - Sorry to hear about your predicament, sadly alot of companies have very little patience over this sort of thing, they seem to think that everyone is the same and have some sort of time limit of recovery over physical or mental pain. They'll all be flowery and sympatheic during the aftermath but a few weeks or months down the line when it still affects you they'll turn thier attitude and expect to have 'got over it' whilst also laoding the work pile on.

There isnt much more advice-wise I can pass to you that hasnt already been said. I can only say good luck and hope it'll all work out for you.

BTW - Has anyone seen or heard from Warren T Claim? Last I heard he was feeling a bit low and talking about a 'way out'. I hope everything is alright :(

This. Although even if I had had the cash I probably wouldn't have it any more as I'd have spent it on Ed Weeks' Wartburg.

That Wartburg is amazing, the kind of thing you'd flog a kidney to get.

Someone is coming to view Trev the C15 tomorrow with a view to his sale, I haven't loved a car/van as much as this since my mk1 ax gt5 all those years ago, I knew this was only a short fling, but I'll miss him :(
