The grumpy thread

Needed to plug a sky box into the phone line. The nearest phone socket was downstairs, so I went out to buy an extension (without measuring how long it needed to be, of course). Had to buy the longest to be safe. Got home, and noticed the unused phone socket right by the box.

Idiot

Phoning round to get quotes for VW van.

Adrian Flux - Sorry cant give you a quote because you have no reason to have a vehicle with 7 seats!!

WTF .. would they refuse to insure me on a volvo estate with 7 seats?

Ha ha fair point. Never knew I had to justify purchases to the insurance company...

Still Peter James has come up with the goods.

Tell them you're a Catholic priest and you're going camping with the Sunday School :D

Right, grumpiness again:

Found my son's 18th birthday present, ticks all the boxes and is a mere catapult's throw away from our front door. I need (ideally) for it to be 'ready to use' by the big day (Wednesday) but the vendor is working nights/days up until then so it's bloody big race against time. Get it right and hopefully he'll be a very happy bunny. Get it wrong and the Fuhrer is going to be SRSLY pissed off with me.

It's not the seller's fault incidentally, I just spotted it fairly late on and dithered about getting hold of him.

Saw at least 3 Banger-prepped MK2 2-door Cortinas on flatbeds, on the A12 heading North this morning. (sad face)

But, on the plus side, I saw an early Mondial on the A23, being driven aggresively. (grin)

That (pardon my french) fucking car.

You know the score - blown turbo, knackered engine, sob sob sob lots of money.

On Tuesday, it evacuated the wishbone bush from the wishbone. Cue lots of banging and thumping every time I even think about braking as the wishbone thumps against the mount.

£90 lighter as I simply haven't got the time, and need a working car.

Yesterday? It chewed all the friction material off one (just one!) of the brake pads. At 95mph on the M1. I realised this when the traffic slowed slightly, I went to gently brake and then the contents of my bowels suddenly became at one with my undercrackers as the pedal hit the carpet. A bit of pumping and I get pressure - so I'm still alive. After hearing the grinding noise from the brakes on the way home from work I investigate and discover my 4mm of pad has turned to 0mm and it's pressing metal to metal. I even noticed part of a brake pad on the floor where I parked the car and thought nothing of it!

My grump therefore is that sodding vehicle costing more and more money every time I turn the fricking key. Set of pads £20, and discs are £22 a pop.

fatha-five had a suspected heart attack yesterday :(

he's already had a bypass many years ago so looks like he will now need more surgery, he's in hospital 40 miles away for the next few weeks, lots of 80 mile roundtrip hospital visits and associated car park charges make me grumpy today

The Flickr uploader is so bloody slow. Is there a quicker way of doing it?

Not only is it slow at the actual uploading, but you seem to have to select each image from your folder manually which takes ages. On the Photobucket one you just click each picture in the gallery once to select it. I downloaded the Flickr uploader, but either it isn't working or if this is it it's shite!

As if having your nearest and dearest in hozzy wasn't bad enough! Whose fucking bright idea was it, to run hospitals like a business? (British Leyland being the model, it seems)

A5, best of luck to your dad.

I dont use flickr but have an account. I did upload 1 picture, but I dont know how to show my images on flickr.

I use the tab+arrow button when selecting images, therefore you can select as many images as you like. I used to use that when uploading to Photobucket, but then photophucket created some 'bulk uploader' thing to upload a load of images at once.

Anyway, in other grumps, my cat still hasnt returned home :(

thanks for the good wishes, but they sent him home this afternoon

it seems the 1st op was a complete success, and now he's home doing nothing for a month - went to see him tonight and he seems fine, just stiff from the op and tired. the wonders of modern medicine and new surgical techniques it seems

How old is he? Just wondering, I know loads of blokes who have had heart attacks years ago and are now fine.

He'll no doubt recover and everything will be fine if he's back at home. :)

Same happened with the old dear about 18 months back; MI the day after the Golden Wedding party (I'm saying nothing...!), blues/twos to the hospital, stabilised, shunt in within 24 hours, home in two days with instructions to rest for a month. Obviously, mother being mother, she was walking a mile to the shops by the end of the second week...

All the best to your dad, A5 8)

Surprising how it can improve lives.

My father in law had a triple bypass and it knocked twenty years off him, ran around like a blue-arsed fly for years afterwards with no hint of a problem.

I don't experience any difference in uploads between PotoBucket, ImageShack, Flickr or Google.

I can upload multiple images but have only done so when they have been sequentially listed in my images folder, just select the run and hit enter.

Every time I return to Flickr I have to work out anew how to post them in a forum. I blame them for shuffling things around but secretly suspect it is down to inattention and raw dumnity on my part.

Good to hear that he's doing well, a5...Cardiology is improving really fast.

Now, for my grumps of the day...

i) my laptop had a small fall on Friday (20-25cm onto the carpet) and for some weird reason 4 keys stopped working (tab, a, capslock and 1). Not much fun having to use ctrl+v for a... at least I found an identical lappy on ebay with a fried motherboard and purchased it for 40 quid inc shipping, so I should make some progress one way or another, and get myself a few extra bits to boot, but I'm guessing I won't be receiving it till Tuesdayish.

ii) I finally managed to sort out a phone line with plusnet, and I need a DSL microfilter. Comet sell them for FIFTEEN QUID, and Maplin are only about 2 pounds cheaper...so I have to order one which also won't be arriving till Tues. I'm guessing it only costs about 25p to make, maybe another 50p to bring it here from China, why won't you fucking sell it for a fiver?? Is a gross profit margin of 300+% too little for you?

Laptop: If the keys that don't work are all in a row (ish), then quite often success equals just reseating the flexible cable on the back of the keyboard that goes into a ZIF socket on the mainboard.

Microfilters: Ebay. I stuck my extra microfilters on ebay ages ago, you often get 4 with a new model so I found plenty of people selling them for about £4-£5

Yes, I definitely think it's only a dodgy contact somewhere, but I won't be touching it until I've got the spares at the ready, just in case...In the meantime, I've taken the a key out and it's a real bugger to put back in...

Sainsbury's sell them for £3, but it's not something they keep in stock, so you have to order it into your local store through the website and it takes 2 days to arrive. Wouldn't expect ebay to be either quicker or cheaper. You know the world's become a silly place when you live in one of the biggest cities in the country and have to place a special order so as to avoid being dry bummed in exchage for a wee bit of plastic.
