The grumpy thread

Had a ‘Job Interview’ of sorts at a premier league football club today (I know this sounds like the start to one of Cavcraft’s amazing gags but it ain’t).

Unsurprisingly, it’s an off pitch role - but necessity dictated it happen at the rather famous training facility.

It went very, very well indeed.

However, it is now abundantly clear that I do need a car that represents the values of both my brand and theirs. Not a 20 year old Toyota that’s burning oil and fuel as fast as each-other.

This is a real rub for me. I’m the least flash person I know, and am generally uncomfortable with any displays of wealth etc. But I suppose there are other members on here who keep their crap car habit to the weekend, right?

It’s a grump, because now I probably have to spend money (!)

Yup they do, but I always clearly state cash only for collection on the rare times I sell stuff on there now. Still in dispute with them after they stopped an auction just because I sent my number to a guy who wanted to view the item but still charged me the fees. Tossers.

Surely the fact that you HAVE to offer PayPal as a payment option a grey area in itself though?

Let's be honest, what would the main reason for eBay insisting that you had to offer PayPal as a payment option.....?

You already have a suitable car in your signature line: the Merc 190.

I guess it just needs someone to take them to court but that isn't going to be your average Joe sadly.

'brand'

[shudders].

I totally concur; wholeheartedly and without reserve. It’s all a massive pile of gash.

But you have two choices. Resist, and watch the ship sail - or buy a ticket with the rest of them. Sometimes, you just have to play the game.

Look at it this way, if you were a binman you'd not turn up to collect bins in a Lexus.

Tool for the job, innit?

2008ish classy car plus private plate. Job Jobbed

It’s that time again....

Fuck solicitors. Fuck property developers. Fuck houses.

My purchase is on hold again because..... the developer does not own the land they have offered a car parking lease on. It falls outside their ownership boundary.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING FUCK????

You don’t need to spend that much to look more respectable if it’s a big issue. Are we talking “premium” or would a clean and tidy used white goods modern with a private plate suffice?

I know of a good * w12 Audi A8 for sale for £3995

Oh Jesus Christ - buy this. Right now. I’ll have it once you’ve spent £72,000 on repairs.

Seen that Mercedes/BMW/Audi dealership, for around £300 you could be driving away in a new car, ok you will need to keep paying that for the next few years and keep the miles down on it and take care of the inevitable scrapes, but it will serve the required purpose. (As long as the pay rise more than covers it)

Presumably you turned up to the interview in the Toyota, so if they offered the job anyway why are you concerned.

Only once has an employer made a big deal about my various unsuitable cars. I was told my Lotus 7 was not suitable for work purposes and that I should buy a proper car, so I bought a Morgan.

I was once asked if I could park by old 240 on the back car park as it didn’t give off the right image. I ended with a space that everyone left clear so I could park there and not disturb the gentle folk of Lutterworth. It was a temporary contract and I needed the money at the time but I was glad to get out of there as it was plain weird. The women used to sit and talk crochet and jam and the men sat on the opposite side talking cricket. My turning up in a battered old 240 with a mattress in the back and ‘the devils music’ playing probably still causes them to go faint twenty years later.

Why? You arrive, park, then do your job, unless you're driving clients around etc, in which case car allowance or company car surely?

NB. Don't take advice from me, I'm shit at playing the game (work or football)

I would 1000% rather take my primera to work than my Porsche - despite being an autoshite Porsche (if such a thing exists) the layman still thinks I’m overpaid.

That’s precisely what I’ve done for years. Driven a crap car because I’m not client facing. This role, however, would put me front and centre with a huge customer, and dealing with their key team members. Just as I’d not turn up in shorts and t-shirt, it would probably be inappropriate to turn up in an old heap. Whether we like it or not, and I’m the latter, we all make snap judgements and form opinions all of the time. I don’t mind being thought of as slightly eccentric and perhaps a bit different, but not deliberately obtuse and odd.

As for a company car? Self employed. So I’ll ask the boss (me).

Update: boss says no.

This is precisely why my Dad (Estate Agent boo hiss) has an 8 year old Mazda 6. His car allowance allows him to have something new and ‘premium’ - but he doesn’t believe it does him any favours at all. So it’s smart, respectable, but not flash.

I’m probably over thinking this. I think the 190 is smart and conveys a decent enough message.

It's a business expense!

The answer of course is one of the new shape Saab 95’s.

It says premium and I don’t care if I’m off the road for 3 weeks as I can’t find a part at the same time.
