The grumpy thread

Brother the Princess called earlier. He has no luck with cars, sometimes self inflicted like topping the brake fluid up with water because he thought that was the radiator fill.

Anyway he has a Peugeot 807 which needs an exhaust, he tells me this has to come from the main dealer as it is the only place that has them.

He also has a pair of dead 206CCs, one has been standing for about the months, needs a battery out on it to see what is wrong.

The other one he was using until it came up with an EML on Monday. He booked it into the garage today but when he went to take it the front spring has snapped and is stopping the wheel rotating.

So he is using my Dad's ex-pbk Volvo, he can't swap insurance again until July as they got shitty with his last change (onto the 807 as a fourth change) earlier in the year.

I'm going to look at them on Saturday, hopefully can get one 206 running. Families eh?

Cisco!

Had a stack cable fail on a five switch stack yesterday, so shut it all down & replaced it. Powered up & three out of five switches are totally dead. That was bad enough yesterday ffs but today I rebuild the stack & one of our spare switches is faulty, find another & bung it in, it's got no IOS! stood here watching an xmodem transfer that's taking about four years....

Oh did I mention it's keeping three big NHS sites off-line while everything in the world goes wrong on the week the senior network bloke is away?

Yesterday was a 8-7 day, today I started at 6am & it's looking like a 7ish finish again.... I hate cisco currently!

Its time for this weeks "All modern [insert item here] are shit" moan.

This week its rubber. Basically anything car related made from rubber.

When I got the Panda on the road last year I bunged a ton of money at it on all new suspension, steering and so on.... Its done probably 200 miles total and some of these rubber parts are fucked.

Exhibit A -

post-17837-0-93716800-1489682789_thumb.jpg

Thats a rubber boot that cover the bottom of the gear selector under the car. Its falling to bits in 5 or 6 different areas....literally just cracking and falling apart.

I didnt take pics, but its the same story with various exhaust rubbers and the steering rack gaiters.

WTF man? Ok, the gear boot thing came from some ebay seller in an unmarked packet and was cheap but stuff like the gaiters are "quality" brand parts like QH or Moog.

I have read in the past that there is a shortage of actual natural rubber, prices are very high and as a result manufacturers are cutting their products with synthetic stuff, reducing the actual rubber content. Well, itsure as fuck shows, if you ask me.

I managed to get it going about 5:20pm.

What's the bloody chances of two faulty switches in one stack & two dodgy spares in a pile of four?

Also a Cisco guy here, sounds like you've been exceptionally unlucky, I think in 10 years of networking I've only known 2 switches to go totally tech. One of which is waiting on me to replace its missing stack member right now, but it's in a shitty part of town and the remaining switch is holding up just fine, so it can probably hold out for another week or 12

My best mate rang me tonight, his new wife found a lump on her breast last week and just got the news back that it's breast cancer, they have a young family and she's only 35. They are in bits at the moment and i feel absolutely shit for them, hopefully it hasn't spread and the chemo won't be too bad for her. Fuck cancer.

Fuck cancer indeed, my sister was diagnosed with lymphoma just before Christmas and is currently having chemo every two weeks, can't say that it's a cake walk for her but they do seem to have ways of managing the side effects these days, at least to an extent that isn't as bad as I expected it to be.

Hearing the news is the worst, because I think we (as human beings) tend to equate cancer with death, I'd already written my funeral speech by 6pm on the day she was diagnosed. But I think breast cancer, along with lymphoma, are two of the most treatable, the NHS have been absolutely brilliant and although it's early days the indications so far point towards recovery, and we're all feeling much more positive about it than 3 months ago

I feel awful for my mate, his ex girlfriend died of cancer when his little girl was only 2 years old and now 11 years later her new step mums got it so she's thinking the worse plus they have a 2 year old daughter together so it's like history repeating it's self.

Nightmare, but i have had one friend and a few clients of mine get thru it. One was in yesterday with the all clear. I hope she gets better.

Porsche Boxster suspension legs

Finished work at 9pm on a Friday thanks to these fuckers

Let's fit a 21mm nut and give you a 7mm Allen key recess to hold the damper rod

Yeah, that works well....

Survival rates are now pretty good, so keep positive. My own mother kicked it into touch about 14 years ago. Chemo doesn't sound much fun, but still preferable to the alternative.

Even when brand new the allen key recesses are sod all use in dampers - Just the tension of the nyloc is usually enough to round them off! An impact gun works wonders on them though.

Yeah leave it then... the totally dead switch in the stack I had issues with runs a small ESX farm so had to be sorted asap. I might have pointed out that switches with build dates that resemble numbers like 2003 might be rather by now...

Last night was as good. While that switch stack was down our entire IP telephony went down too for an unrelated problem. That turned out to be two Nortel switches stacked had gone mental too, I've no idea how a switch can run if everytime you try to login to it all you get is a firmware corrupt message... Left the building at almost 9pm after a 8am start.

If only it was overtime! all we get is basic flex ffs & I've put about 10 extra hours in over 3 days.

I've been looking for a particular family friendly car to replace Missus's Fiesta. I've watched a few go through BCA at about £1000 over CAP clean money, which after fees and collection meant it really didn't stack up. There was a privately advertised example bout 45 minutes drive from work that was advertised for weeks at far too much money (about £1000 more than CarGiant were offering them for) but with good additional spec. I made the guy an offer which equated to £500 more than trade-in price, and £500 less than I could buy from a car supermarket.

He accepted, I travelled down one evening and viewed and we shook hands on the deal. He refused to take a deposit however, but seemed a proper stand-on guy. He told me I'd have to wait 10 days as he was getting a replacement car. A bit of a PITA, but he stayed in contact and we made arrangements for me to collect yesterday and confirmed Thursday and at 11.00 yesterday morning. 1 hour before I'm due to be leaving, with lift arranged, he text me to say 'sorry, just got a better price elsewhere'. What a waste of time and effort, the fucking cretin.

Tends to be power surges that do them in, presumably they're on UPS's or at least surge protected PDU's? Other than that they seem to be fairly indestructible. Left forgotten in comms rooms under an inch of dust and they just do their thing.

In other news my car mojo is at an all time low lately, this speeding ticket fiasco continues to rumble on, I've had to send them pictures of my car so they can 'compare them to the pictures that they have' but having read up how this is likely to go if they still think is mine there is a chance I could actually get screwed for this, if not for the speeding for failing to provide driver details.

The waiting is driving me crazy, as someone that's always been honest and obeyed the law to the letter, being under the 'threat of prosecution' when you 100% didn't do it, sucks. Up until that landed I'd had a few little wins too and was feeling pretty good about spring being here, the clocks going forward, show season etc. Now all I can think is if I end up getting shat on with 6 points for this then I'll probably have to sell up most of the shit heaps because insurance will be too much.

And I'll have to make it my life's mission to track down the person who cloned my plate and knife him in the throat.

I last remember having it in my car and then taking it into the house.

Found it! Of course after i have received my new driving licence so a £20 mistake.

It was here

I left it behind the hidden flap. I have been using the starlet for the last week so had forgotten that the vel satis had loads of hidey holes.

Yeah, that works well....

What I use is a 21mm spark plug socket which handily has a 21mm hex on the outside as well as a half inch drive - 7mm Allen key through the middle with a 3/8 extension on the end for leverage

Bit of a mixture - after months of waiting, went to see Devin Townsend at Hammersmith (Odeon) Apollo last night. He was, as usual awesome, and myself and my posse met Mr Inconsistant of this forum and banter was exchanged. Grin so far.

Whoever was in charge of the sound needs to be tortured however. The two support acts were too bass-heavy, and Devin himself was barely audible, and when you could actually hear him, a bit toppy. Generally the sound was muddy and muddled. Grump.

Got home last night after an unusually slow trip across Laahndan at 1.30am, to find my phone has disappeared. Fuck it, it's probably under the seat or summert.

Nope.

Rang Hammersmith Odeon this morning, apparently some fat clueless twat had left it in the gents, and it had been handed in. Grump for the loss. Grin for the find. Grump for the journey back up to the smoke to collect.

You forgot to think like an idiot

He's got a Vel satis, how much more of an idiot could he think like?

I'm going to look at them on Saturday, hopefully can get one 206 running. Families eh?

So the 206 that has been sitting since September worked with the battery from the other one after the spark plugs were cleaned up. It's battery is in charge but I think it needs a new one.

The other one is an auto so bump starting is out, it is also now displaying engine immobiliser fault. Seems close to firing up, my brother has disconnected the battery and will try again tonight. The broken spring was angle ground one coil further up so now clears the tyre so it can be pushed to the quick fit about 100meters down the road if need be.

so many grumps for today where do i start?

been to the vets this morning cos puss cat isn't too well, his bowls are loose, and he is not eating as much as he was. not his fault, and not the grump. indeed the cat is eating little and often, and drinking and sounds like there are things that the vet can do for him.

that is that on the way home, poor old puss just had to go in the travel box, so i had to let him out and have him with poopy paws in my lap. only a couple of miles back home, but far enough. so, get home, get the animal cleaned up plus the box needed to be washed out when we got home, and all the clothes i was wearing went into the washer, and me into the shower...

then, the old record player has finally turned up its toes, put it on this afternoon, and nothing.... checked the fuse, and still nothing, so off to the tip with it. except the turntable which i've kept. i dragged the other, equally elderly Technics stereo down from upstairs only to find that in spite of having half a dozen aux ports in the back of it, none of them are for a turntable. there is one for a dvd player, a video recorder and even one for a laser disc (?) but not a phono one. bum hats, so i'm going to have to buy something new if i want to listen to an LP. bloody great.....

in better news though, the Technics has a working tape player, and the random tape i found was one with ZZ Top and Marillion one, i've not heard either since i dunno when, so listening to them was a welcome change!!

Shirley if you have an input it doesn't matter what it is called?

Something tells me phono inputs from a turntable have a pre-amp filter as the bass is too powerful for the standard amp inputs.
