The grumpy thread

Is there only me that is of the opinion modern DPF equipped Diesels should be sold to Autobahn bound German Photocopier salesman?

I always seem to be hearing about people whinging on about the DPF light being on, but it's always people who despite the advice have sought a diesel, then proceed to potter about to the shops in it. Then think the idea of 'opening the taps' is driving it for 3 minutes at 60 in 6th down the bypass.

What they've failed to realise is they need to take it within an inch of its life for 10-15 miles, the problem with this is that even in 4th in a modern diesel you'll be into driving ban speeds. I was in the car with someone the other day, their idea of 'opening it up' a bit was to let the turbo kick in and shift up at 3,000 rpm...

I gave our vectra the bejesus on the M62 - the only time a car has ben confused with a Boeing 707.

Bathroom pull switch has lasted over 40 years till it finally packed up, my grump?

New one as lasted 8 months!

Funny you should say that. One I replaced in my parents' house last year went pop on Monday, the previous one was in there since 1976. I got a new one this time from the local builders' merchant. £2.50 with a 10 year guarantee!

I actually found MyHermes reasonable, I sent a pair of roof bars to Saucedoctor who is on an entirely different lump of rock to me for about £6 or summat. Roof bars!

I just had to pay a fairly chunky fine for driving round the wrong side of a traffic island in the middle of a long, straight and deserted minor road, as captured on an overhead camera.

The fact that the correct side of the traffic island was blocked by a parked car, clearly visible in the photo, is apparently not a valid defence.

Fuck's sake.

Says who?  Did you take it to court, or did you just use the in-house "appeals" process?

Posted

The latter, because I'm self employed and it's cheaper to pay the fine than take a day off work to go to court or pay a lawyer. Also it arrived in this morning's post and had to be paid before tomorrow or the fine doubles.

Edit: I realise this is failing to do my bit to push against the rising tide of fascism, but you have to pick your battles and I didn't have the strength for this one.

In my experience, eight months is now the maximum lifespan of a pullcord switch, at least the MK ones. I've been through three in two years. MK used to be decent stuff.

I use Collect Plus regularly, no complaints.

Yes me too. I can collect/return parcels from my local Newsagents too, which is handy.

Anyone cut a hole in concrete? I did on Monday night.

I decided that I wanted the leccy supply to enter the opposite end of the garage from where we had put the duct.

The suppliers like the cable to come in to the property deep down, not just through the wall, and told me it must be a 100mm hole.

No problems thinks I. I'll angle down through the concrete floor to come out through the block work just above the foundation.

I borrowed a 115mm core cutter and drill from a pal who I'm sure I saw smirking to himself as he handed it over.

I couldn't start before 8pm because of reasons. After an hour I had travelled about 2 inches into the concrete floor. As I bored deeper, the drum of the cutter kept gripping the sides of the hole. The drill has a clutch so once stuck, the only way to restart was to pull the cutter out and start again. This had to be done every minute or so.

It had to be completed before the Hydro board appeared in the morning. After boring about 18 inches down, I gave up and started drilling from the outside in. After 6 hours of hanging on to that fucking vibrating bastard, I made the break through.

Never again.

drum That's actually quite funny but only because it brought back bad memories of when I had to do the same, my wrists felt like they had been stomped on by an elephant.

So what are you meant to do, turn around and reverse through the island before turning around again to resume your drive? Stupid.

Automated camera trap doesn't care what you do, just cares about fines.

Because computers are so much smarter than us. Presumably a super-intelligent* Microsoft driverless car would just have sat there idling all night until the fuckwit who blocked the road - the actual illegal action here, unpunished - came and got his/her poxy Renault shitbox the fuck out the way.

Surely a fine like that must have been issued by a human monitoring the camera though, unless we now have automated "driving the wrong side of a roundabout to avoid parked car on the right side of the roundabout" cameras

And surely that human was a fucking moron of the first order.

Well I'm meant to be going to Padeswood to collect a reliant Robin on a towing dolly. After speaking to our Cheshire car division regards winds in the area I've decided fuck that for a lark.

Last week we were told to expect temperatures for this week in the high teens.

Now we have storm Doris.

Seen as the NHS is strapped for cash how about getting rid of the Met office and spending the money on the health service.

You would have a better forecast reading the bastard tea leaves...

Yes I did it as a summer job once - we had a drilling rig with a hose that sprayed water onto the cutter which was tipped with industrial diamonds.  We used to drill out cores for sampling and one time we had to drill a load of holes in an 18" reinforced concrete floor of a new building for the services to go between floors.  My highly skilled job was to go down a floor and ensure the core didn't fall on anyone.

I was down to 55 on the m40 this morning, otherwise I was blown about too much! Combination of bad tyres, possibly iffy ARB bits and just driving a land barge! It was the tree gaps that did it. Fine Fine Fine Fine OH SHIT Fine Fine Fine Fine WOAH etc.

We just got this email at work too:

Good Morning

There have been tiles flying off the roof due to the high winds. Should you be parked outside the fire exit/stairwell near to central ops department, please feel free to move your car to a space away from the building. This can be in non-Whistl spaces for today only.

Also, those going to the smoking area, please don’t walk close to the building on your journey.

Maintenance people have been called to resolve the problem, but are unable to access the roof while the high winds continue.

Tempted to go fetch my car now there's loads of spaces... I want to go to the smoking area soon as well...

In typical French fashion something completely unrelated materialised last night. Took Van for a small run to try and define hgf or just a bad air lock. It's decided to breath really heavy, smells of oil and the unrelated item to emerge is 4th gear synchro seems to be failing.

We've a front garden full of rubbish - it's bin day and as we're on the end every fucker's shite has blown into our garden and is trapped. Bucking follocks, means I've got to go out and get it all up. Cunch of bunts of a job.

The XUD conversion you've always wanted it to have steps ever closer...

But where the Billy be frigged did 4th gear synchro get all upset in this equation? It was fine the other day, just a bit sticky like all the gears can be!
