Prolly dooming it now, but for a 181K disco 2 it's not been that bad a car. Haven't had all the guaranteed disco failure things happen yet. N you missed me ranting yesterday that the brake calliper decided to stick on. Desticking sliders on xmas day, lovely*

Dan, I've no ncb either but as someone mentioned, look into larger cars. My saxo, corsa, punto and micra were all more to insure than the vec c, Picasso, kia, audi and xantia. My audi a4 on a N plate with the 1.9tdi was one of the cheapest. Vans even cheaper. Quotes on the Berlingo was also quite cheap so if you need the seats look into diesel berlingos

Posted

Aye, but without the magic NCB you're only one step up from a 21 year old who's had a licence for THREE FUCKING YEARS and can only just start to afford insurance

Sorry, had to EFA.

Sig changed just for you bmw person.

I'd have a c15 if I could put a seat in the back,no doubt about that

Rear facing or side facing. Needs to be noted with the insurer and that's it. Front facing needs belts fitted etc.

I popped out earlier for some baccy, and the interior fans didn't work on full speed... But the handbrake light came on the dash!

Eventually the fans blew some air out to de mist the window, along with some wiping with a rag and I could drive, where the fans came on a bit more. I'd best order a heater fan resistor ASAP! Got some money for crimbo from my gran handily!

Then the handbrake light no longer worked, but that means it's not the bulb (or it is and it just needs replacing...)

Id rather than fans worked than the bulb though tbh. Will keep an eye on that

BECAUSE FRENCH. I've had to start twatting the top of the ZX's dashboard before the speedo will deign to actually operate. (though more seriously, quirky electrics of your nature are indeed often ignition switch related, as Richard says).

Microwave has decided to go tits up. Are they making them worse quality now like with washing machines? 3.5 years out of a £150 panasonic doesn't feel like I've had my monies worth.

Pull it apart, chances are it's a fuse between capacitor and magnetron. Google how to discharge cap before you get a meter on the fuse.

I fixed outlaws one for the princely sum of £1.50.

I also have a spare fuse, thermal switch and magnetron of my last built in jobbie. Parts are silly common between them so don't stress it too much.

Finding myself at a crossroads as the year draws to an end. Some of you might have seen that I came off my MZ (East German motorbike) last week, minimal damage and all repaired now :-) This combined with worsening legs (I was born with missing knee ligaments and a few other issues) means I'm increasingly looking at buying a car,as I think if chosen wisely I should be able to afford to run one, those of you with huge fleets, think yourself lucky!

My biggest issue is going to be insurance, seems I made a mistake when I was 18 in going classic,as 10 years on I have 0 ncb, despite not having made a claim.Naturally, shite is of interest,Favorit and Maestro being top contenders, but even those lowly chariots are coming in at £600 to insure, which is frankly absurd.Just looking for advice really.

My Mrs has had a Motability car for the last 6 years, has been a named driver on my policies for the last 16 years and had her own policies up to 2010.

When she insured her Mgf they took into consideration the number of claim free years and gave her 6yrs ncb.

Worth checking if any insurance companies will do the same with your 10 years classic insurance.

Works sprinter. 64 plate long wheelbase. Doesn't like putting power down in the damp, eml keeps coming on, no cruise or limit working and currently averaged sub 10mpg this morning. Mileage of nearly 150k. I don't fancy it's chances too much!

Limiter not working and you're complaining? When the one on my EuroCargo accidentally* broke I was fucking made up.

It's the one on the stalk you can set yourself. Really handy with monumental amounts of speed cameras

That's about 11p a day for unlimited use of it...not great, but not too bad.

I think EuroNCAP might play a part as I was quoted £100 cheaper for a Laguna 2 than a Primera or Mazda 626 (all 2.0 16v, same age etc).

Also having my "living with partner" chopped off £200.

Sounds more like cruise control to me.

Its a cruise control and limiter. Push lever in so light comes on stalk and it won't go over set speed. Push it again so light is off and it's cruise control. Both modes don't work now.

Merry Crimbo to one and all🎅

Are you going to tell him, or shall I?

I'm hoping its not the ignition switch, it's been done before. The FCF recommends jiggling the key about as a test before getting the multimeter out.

But the other week the fans went on FULL BLAST for a few days then fixed themselves, and the Blower motor transistor thing was given as a culprit, so I've ordered a cheap one of those from ebay to see if it fixes things before looking at the ignition switch and the relay mod.

Not tried it today, going out to a party later with Eva so will see if it's fixed itself yet.

You don't rest your foot on the clutch do you bub? I had a Vectra where the cruise wouldn't engage, turns out that because they didn't have a dummy pedal for my left foot I used to lightly rest it on the clutch and the switch to disengage was that sensitive it was knocking the CC off instantly.

Posted

No I don't. It comes up on centre display cruise, speed tronic inopp. Seek assistance. I'm a firm believer in resting on clutch fuck it up!

Posted

Vec c is very sensitive that way too both ones we had working did and the one now doesn't work

Just had to reverse the car further up the drive and put the wheelie-bins infront of it.All because the twat who wrote my Discovery off in February is back. He's parked in a similar way (half on the path half on the road) only about two metres nearer so he'll have less of a run up when he tries to ram my car out of the way.

Why he has to park like that I've know idea.He is visiting some people over the road and there is quite clearly enough room to park his car completely on the road that side.Yeah I know, first world problems but I do suffer with anxiety and won't be able to relax until this twat has gone.

Make a point of putting some cones, bubble wrap, cushions etc behind your car in case he's having trouble seeing it.

Ring the companies & talk to them. I've had classics as my only car a few times & never had an issue getting an 'intro bonus' equal the number claim free years I've had on the classic.
