The grumpy thread

the owners of the blast furnace at redcar sound like they are going bust.

production will end today, or paused in SSI's words, and the layoffs have already started.

most of the 2000 workers will be gone by Monday, with god knows how many others will loose out when the plant shuts.

the owners though have given it a good go, I cannot take anything away from that. they and the workforce have tried their damnedest to make it pay, cheap rubbish from china though and a falling steel price have made it inevitable.

doesn't make the closure any easier though.

very sad for all those involved.

It's shit news, they (the company) have apparently defaulted on a few recent repayments to the bank. I hope for the work force a buyer is found, maybe there another company (Tata?) who can get better steel at a better price? The thought of anyone losing their job is sickening, let alone 2,000 people.

'Genius' makes stupid offer and then gets offended. So goes 98% of the internet (and 100% of Facebook).

Good riddance, Lunatic \ Billy - penniless idiots aren't worth your time. Put some vaseline'd photos up next time; that way your thread will go gold.

i think alot of the problems with SSI is that the chinese have taken to dumping steel on the world market at rock bottom prices, since demand in china has slumped.

i know that the chinks have been dumping reinforcing bars/mesh for some time..

thing is when this stuff has been tested it is nowhere near the correct strength/tolerance/spec etc as you would expect been monkey metal made from from recycled bikes and bean tins....

but since Redcar can churn out high quality product week in/week out which was why SSI bought the plant in the first place, to feed the thai car industry (mainly)

the losses though cannot go on indefinitely, and it seems that the money has run out.

when an italian steelworks got into money troubles earlier in the year, the italian government nationalized the site to give them a chance to sort themselves out. no chance of that happening her though....

Took the Saab to a not so local *specialist Saab garage for a service and change the gearbox bearing/seal. dropped it off on wed night and dropped keys through the letterbox. Got a call at half ten on Thurs morning saying "got a chest  infection so I can't do your car you will have to pick it up."

Yeah thanks for leaving my car with the keys in it on a busy industrial estate knowing I was working and unable to pick it up until the evening......luckily it was still there when I finally got there... Needless to say I won't be going back there..... Am I expecting too much that a company would actually look after my car ??

Blimey no! On the odd occasion I leave my car with a garage based on an industrial estate I always make sure it will be locked away at night.

A car left out on a local industrial estate screams torch me/steal me/brick my windscreen !!

I fear I may be suffering from a bout of psychosis.

Been plagued with fear, panic attacks and existential thoughts for the last week and I just don't feel right. Behaviour is a bit off too I think.

I'm 19, I don't understand why it's so scary.

Going to see a doc ASAP.

very sad for all those involved.

Jaguar Land Rover built a plant in china to get around the punitive tax they have on stuff coming into China.

The chinese will not buy the china built cars - they want the UK built ones.

Even the chinese think their own stuff is shit.

^ YAY for globalisation and the failed neoliberal experiment.  Everything is utterly fucked, but so long as there is cheap shiny stuff to buy on tick and brainless crap on a 50" curved LED TV, most people haven't noticed yet.

I seriously want to go off-grid.

Panic attacks etc are just a symptom of modern times Ghosty there's nothing wrong with you. I think EVERYONE on here has them lol. You don't have psychosis, just chill out and stop concentrating too much on 'I'm going mad'. I've had panic attacks and anxiety for 18 years, it took about ten years to realise I wasn't going to die:going mad etc. just keep busy, they go away :)

Having attended Whiston hospital every day (sometimes twice) to see my newborn son who is still in the special care baby unit, I strated parking on an estate 5-10 minutes walk away as we were spending a fortune on parking.

Come back to the car today - a resident had left a note saying that I could be fined as it is residents only - one sign around 50 metres from where I park.

I appreciate they dont want hospital visitors dumping cars everywhere - in my defence my car was not causing a nuisance where I had parked it.

I am glad some people have so few issues in their life that they have time for stuff like this.

I'm up at 6. Next door think it's okay to have a party going on at full volume still. No one will complain. Their cars will not be there or be burnt out if they do. I'm glad to be out of there for a few weeks. Shame really because, apart from them, the street is great and full of the most wonderful people...

We had the same when my wife was in hospital for 6.5 weeks when my son was born. The parking fees even then (22 years ago!) were getting silly, especially when you visit a few times a day as you say. At the time there was no sort of rule where you couldn't park on nearby side streets, and I'd never block anyone off or park on the pavement, but I got a few 'curtain twitcher' notes under my wipers. I was there again Friday, but have found a sneaky on-site free parking area for a couple of hours.

Anyhow, more importantly I hope your son is out of the special care unit soon and able to come home.

It's possible that the note was from somebody who knew the signage was inadequate and didn't want to see you getting a fine. The obvious solution would be to stop charging people to use a car park that they already own, which has already happened in Scotland at all but three hospitals.
