Ooooh, ransomware. Nasty.

Chances are the encryption is going to be pretty good, so you're not getting those files back without paying.

I have heard that some people have paid on credit card, had their files decrypted, and done a chargeback but that's a bit risky.

Posted

It's asking for a Bitcoin payment so credit card chargeback won't work. As I say though the thing doesn't seem to have managed to fuck up anything too vital. A Google search revealed horror stories of businesses having payroll files etc encrypted- nasty shit.

I'd write it off if I were you and do a full re-install of the OS. And get a decent anti-virus, there are several pretty decent free ones out there, or get a commercial one.

Its not 100% effective as it won't prevent you from opening something infected and borking the computer, but its better than nothing.

Also, and this is just a suggestion - look at getting a desktop Linux OS which will be OMGFREE. Either Ubuntu or (my preferred option) Elemental OS. It looks and behaves exactly like Mac OSX and there is a free linux equivalent of pretty much every piece of windows software, and those that wont work can usually be run in WINE. Linux machines are a LOT less suceptible to viruses too - I wont say impervious, but seriously less vulnerable.

I was going to suggest this myself. There are plenty of people who say that it'll take you years to figure out Linux and that nothing will work properly, and a few years back that was probably true, but it's frankly b0ll0cks now. As Stanky says, there's well-developed software for virtually every task, and WINE will cope with everything else. Also, even if you choose a distro with lots of whistles & bells, it will run noticeably faster than Windows.

I've just downloaded the latest version of AVG - the version I had installed was getting on a bit and probably didn't recognise the bug.  Bit of a stable door - bolted horse situation, granted.  Linux might be worth looking into - I tried it years ago and couldn't get my head around it, but from what you say it looks like it might be worth another go.

If you can be bothered, get something like virtual box and try running ElementalOS on a virtual machine on your local PC. Honestly, you'll be blown away by it.

water off the a/c condenser- they all(anything with ac) do that sir

Aircon's not working at the moment,it was definitely coolant as it was hot.It did the same thing again on the way to work today, but I couldn't see where it was coming from. When I got home,I took the undertray off,but of course it wasn't leaking then

Wuvvum - you can dual boot. My laptop was running Windows, but I got fed up and installed Linux as well. Handy, because if I need to nip back to Windows and remind myself how sodding slow it is, I can.

Posted

Aye, dual-booting is very useful. Just be extra-careful when you're setting up the partitioning and boot-loader, as it's embarrassingly easy to accidentally wipe Windows (ask me how I know this).

I may not be the greatest at welding in the world but bugger me my newish welder is shit! The wire feed judders like a bitch and the speed dial is useless. That'll teach me for buying one off ebay without tons of research.

Think I only managed to get anything done as I had jakebullet's help. One day cybernautics is going to want him back..

I park like this to avoid getting dinged by lazy, fat fucktards and shiny-suited shits.

Been dinged many times before so don't give two shits what people think.

Good luck parking by any of my motors then, you'll struggle to get back into your car.

Mrs DW used to take that sort of parking as a challenge in her Mini. She could usually squeeze it in somehow.

Fucking FWD gearboxes. Fucking Japanese sports coupes. Fucking inept me.

I'm giving up on this Celica clutch. If I'm struggling this much getting the box out, there's no way on earth I'll get the fucker back in again. It's just not worth the struggle.

Anyone need any Celica bits before it goes?

I am back from the dentist £50 lighter in the wallet and with a bottom jaw that would rival that of Jimmy Hill, or so it feels thanks to the anaesthetic.  I'm really shit with needles so having about 7 injections was just great, I got the assistant to hold my hand so I didn't freak out after the first three.  Still, chompers all filled with dentist isopon and given a dentist machine mop so I feel ready to take on those concourse smiling competitions.  Just don't ask me to say any words with the latter B in.

My dentist, PJ Duncan, always offers to do fillings without anaesthetic. It's no more unpleasant and the few brief moments of pain are no worse than the injections. The big advantage is that once you leave you don't feel like you've been to the dentist.

Were you ready to rumble?

Owning an absurdly narrow Subaru van is great for situations like this, as it fits quite happily in 2/3 the width of a space.  The Perodua would probably be quite good in that situation too, but the opportunity hasn't yet presented itself since I've owned that.

I used to do this........and then had a filling which went a bit deep and I can tell you that without the slightest shadow of doubt that if the filling is deeper the pain is extreme and longer lasting. Still makes me cringe...............although going to dentist anyway makes me cringe.

And they don't charge any less despite using less parts.

there are some shiyster dentists about.

when my kid sister ived near nottingham, she when to see some twat in mansfield.who said she needed this filling, that filling and this doing, all for £500 please.

she said no, leave it, and then came up to the family dentist in Redcar that we've been with since we were kids, he said, you need a clean and a polish, £16 please.

that fucker in mansfield i think he must have fancied himself as fuckin JR Ewing given how much he liked drilling...

and this is a true story too.....

Only two dentists ever been good/skilled enough to do most of my filling work without some form of pain prevention, one is long retired now a proper dental surgeon and the far from unattractive young Irish lady who does for us now....mind you need  an OSR upper tooth out in due course and i aint that brave.

I had this too. It was awful! It put me off dentists and I haven't been back to one since.

The pain I had when I did my back in was worse, though the dentist thing still plays on my mind now. Horrible!

God bless Ebay fucknuggets: A question regarding the sale of a 110V grinder.

"Hi, can I collect it because I am local, also can this grinder use 240V plug."

How do these people get through the day?

When I was young, I had a couple of fillings without and I didn't go to the dentist again for about 20 years! Now, I have a filling and get an abscess under it within days/weeks and end up in a world of pain. So I don't bother and just have the bastards pulled out.

Other than that, I am pleased to say, that so far today, has been pleasantly 'grump' free.... let's see if it fooking lasts!  :)
