I had to drop a colleague off in the centre of Newhaven yesterday. I was surprised to see that the social club there appears to have closed down - always used to be busy when I was younger. I think the railway club may still be going, which is probably the only place left in town now to get a cheap drink.

That said, I'm not sure you can call any of the pubs left in Newhaven high street trendy. Most of the pubs in the surrounding urban area have gone 'gastro pub' though.

I may well be speaking out of turn here, but having driven through a few times is it not the case that Newhaven is an unmitigated, oceangoing shithole of a place? I do confess I never stopped to actually savour the delights, just sort of rushed to get out the other end of the place. Even that yellow ferry that turns up has an air of grim about it, and I’m usually quite keen on a spot of cross channel boatery!

You flatter it, it's worse than that.

People who launch their rubbish out of the car window instead of taking it home and putting it in the bin are the most selfish a-holes in the world.

I’m trying to think of an exception, but I think  you’re probably right.

Report it to your local council.  If you took a pic of the car and are prepared to make a formal statement they will get a £500 fine through a basically automated process.

Ask me how the rude cunt who chucked his fag outside my house knows.

Unfortunately where I live is very rural so the chances of catching them are slim to none. I go around with my litter picker a couple times a year to keep on top of it.

Mr council man came out to the scene of the crime twice, a nice two hour round trip from the office.  I wouldn't call it a metropolis here.

I'm yet to find a nicer pub in Sussex than a wetherspoons 😭

They've all turned to shit in my opinion

There’s loads of good ones, just not in the towns normally. The Plough and Harrow in Littlington is the best near to me. Most of the pubs in Alfriston are good. The Gun at Gun Hill is really nice, as are the Oak near Abbots Wood and also the Yew Tree at Arlington. To name a few.

The weatherspoons nearest me (Brighton or Eastbourne) would be a wasted journey; might as well go to the local flat roof pub, which would be The Good Companions in Peacehaven.

It’s a fishing/port town so it’s always had problems. But up until about 15-20 years ago it had a decent high street with independent businesses bar the post office, banks and Safeway. We’ve lost our local police station, the fire station crewing has been reduced down to a day shift and a single watch, the ambulance station has been closed. The fishermen’s club was the first social club to go - it got flattened for a vanity project the regeneration* of the west quay. No doubt the social club that closed recently will be replaced by flats. There were a few car dealers, there were large manufacturers and industrial operations. There was always the slow ferry, but we had the sea cats as well with a 2 hour crossing - I remember my Nan taking me to see it when it left or came in. It’s really gone to shit since retail parks, the internet and a drive for cheapness have taken over, the town has no real structure or community anymore. Everything is just getting turned into shitty housing estates filled with bland boxes and fuck all infrastructure. It’s not the place I grew up in, and even though there were shit things about it when I grew up, it’s difficult to process how shit and dead it is now.

I went to Hull once. Ended up in a pup called The Lair.  I swear the till behind the bar had 3 buttons on it. One marked pints, one marked halfs and one marked drugs. It was a wild place. Had to wade thru a river of urine just to get to the toilets.

Plough at Pyecombe

Royal Oak at Poynings

Both very rural areas, though, not so sure about towns although I'm sure I've been in a decent pub in Eastbourne, just can't remember which one!

‘The Good Companions’ with a flat roof in Peacehaven sounds absolutely idyllic…

Don't get me started. The verges all around here are awash with litter of all sorts. It makes me feel physically sick to look at it and to think that people are such selfish inconsiderate slobs. Probably my number one pet hate to make me despair of humanity, though there are plenty more.

Agree. In fact I'd go further and say it's true of most British towns nowadays. Full of litter, closed down shops interspersed with charity shops and vaping emporiums, choked with traffic, slobby people who don't give shit, etc etc. I can't remember the last town I went to and actually thought "yes, this is nice". Most places nowadays I just want to get out of as quickly as possible.

Even more depressing that the gist of these comments is true of pretty much anywhere nowadays.

I was in Chelmsford town centre on Wednesday for an hour, first time I've been in a UK centre for 5 years.

Is it ok if I say it was ok? Reasonable selection of shops and quite clean.

The only annoying thing was going into Metro Bank with a paper £20 to see if they would swap for a plastic one. Only allowed if you have an account there, ID etc. How many 63 year olds are wandering around trying to launder single 20s? Yes, Britain is a bureaucratic hellhole.

£20? I'd let you have the blue one out of my MetroBank for that :-)

On my way back home from Canterbury and the Saab keeps losing power. Hopefully it’s just the wastegate vacuum actuator pipe again as it’s intermittent.
