Love it Rob, looks really nice! Nice spec too. There's a guy over on the Montego site who was thinking about making new filler pockets in fibreglass, might be worth an enquiry?

http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=16715

Thanks Dicky. That is the main problem area, in the pocket and the panel surrounding it. Looks very unsightly and last time I put my hand up inside the arch crumbly bits started to fall out, so I've learnt to leave well alone. Overall though it drives great, all the electric bits work - sunroof, mirrors, central locking and all four windows - I just need to decide next year whether to sink some money into it to sort the bodywork or break it for spares (makes me wince just thinking about it!).

I think you've answered your own question there! It's got to be worth saving, the GSI is a very rare beast nowadays. Got any pictures of the problem area?

My new barge:

IMG-20121101-00076-sm-1.jpg

Picked it up for £850 with a load of advisories on the old mot that expired 20 days after purchase. Took it to my MOT man, who went over it with a fine toothed comb. Outcome: 12 months mot. Main dealer MOT'd it the year before and seemed like they were laying the groundworks for this years bill. Cheeky. It's got bumps and scrapes all over, but pretty much everything works on it.

It's a 2.4 140 povo spec, originally an overseas car (got a few receipts from German Volvo dealers). In the 1000 miles I've done since getting it, it has returned 38 mpg which I'm very happy with.

Anyone who reads my tat blog will know these already, but heres some of my fleet:

P1050230.jpg

Rover 220SLi - done 62k in this in 3 years after replacing the utterly knackered engine and box it came with. Probably the best car I have ever had, but looking embarrassingly scruffy nowadays. The rear spoiler just fell off the other day.

P1050290.jpg

Halfway through a fairly serious rebuild of this £450 ebay find Maserati Biturbo, what fuggin old crocks these things are. Even when it is finished, it will be 110% solid shite. Look fantastic mind you.

P1050336.jpg

This Argenta is sitting around doing nothing at the moment which is doing it no favours. Got it in for an MOT this weekend, after which it might be moving to a new home.

P1050127.jpg

Bought this Polish-regd FSO Polonez off a couple of lunatics a few weeks back, needs a bit of welding which i will get round to in time.

+++++ assorted others - BARNED

Got a back light somewhere, the perspex sun visors... probably more too...

And do you know what the offset on the Mazers alloys are?

The main things I can think of that it needs are a fuel tank sender unit and a drivers elec window switch, got either of those?

Just been taken off the road as tax has run out. Was going to be a keeper, but I'm struggling to feel the love! Bit rattly on the top end, and has a clunk on from the front. MOT Feb, IIRC. £275 would take it if anyone fancies it.

Just been pressed back into service as it's taxed and the Audi isn't. Need to get rid, though, as the bypassed heater matrix means it's freezing. I'll pimp it about a bit, but there's a for sale thread here if anyone's interested.

And, of course, there's the Celica, which I really should do something with.

Rover koop is hopefully being flogged off on Monday. Just to rub its big chrome nose in it, I've already replaced it with this:

p1010278q.jpg

95k, history coming out of its arse, looks and drives GR8000. Minor electro-frog foibles. Didn't want another silver koop but there's an unavoidable surfeit of these - apparently a third of all the 406 koops sold in the UK were "satellite grey".

Bit of a midlife-crisis mobile, in a suburban-Leslie-Phillips kind of way. Also a V6 auto, so an incurable pezaholic. Not wild about da rimz, but otherwise I freakin love it.

Posted
history coming out of its arse,

I'll remember that phrase for the next curry/lager 'morning after', "fuggin nora that was a hot one, i literally had history coming out of my arse all morning"

Posted

Hey those 406 Koops are the best looking car of the last 20 years bar none. Give it 30 years and they'll be mega collectable too I reckon. What are they actually like to drive/ live with? I imagine them to be utterly devoid of personality when you're actually behind the wheel but could probably live with that as long as I just used one to cruise alongside mirrored buildings all day checking myself out.

And when you get bored you can turn it into a great* Ferrari 360 replica

Posted

Damn straight Baz. They're DROP-PANTS GAWJUS. Future-classicness should be fast-tracked owing to their current hyper-barg status, which even as we speak is consigning 94% of the remaining stock to a Barried-up, fake-Ferrari, charity-rally early grave. Also "helps" that doing the cambelt on a V6 is a £600 job.

Good news is that we're now at the sweet-spot where they're cheap to buy, not quite too old to be definite money pits, and loads are being broken. You can get shitters here for £200 and decent ones from £800 - I had a look on leboncoin/French eBay and they're nearly all €3000 and up.

I've only had mine for two days, but that's enough to report that it pulls like a TOTAL FUCKING BASTARD (in sport mode) when you floor it, and handles exactly 299 times better than either a 144k Rover 820 or a 2001 Mondeo estate still on its original shocks (my unhelpful current frames of reference). But, yep, it's not exactly a charisma-tron from a driving perspective. The standard-issue 406 dash etc doesn't help. At least the last owner stuck a Powerflow exhaust on, which makes a sound like TEN MEN FELCHING HISTORY.

Lurker and occasional contributor here.

Here's my selection of shite.

This is my daily driver, as good you can expect a one ownered, garaged all its life, well maintained Toyota Carina to be. Its a joy to drive, not in a Lancia/BMW way but its reassurance, ownership and ease of controls kind of way.

8128366426_e6c61dd0a1_o.jpg

...and then I have this which really is a genuinely fun car to throw around. I've had it for years now and still can't bring myself to sell it. Its not worth much so I might as well keep it.

5821993004_8e01cbbc9e_o.jpg

...continuing my Japanese car theme, I have these too.

6108930700_89801dc0ae_o.jpg

That's a Datsun 1400 aka 510. Its a genuine UK car, one of a couple of thousand imported before Datsun really assaulted the market.

5625408117_a1f4267aba_o.jpg

This is a first generation carina - currently going through some level of resto. Its a Celica underneath without the pony car styling but it holds it own.

368349787_567cd9b5a1_o.jpg

This has been in retirement for several years and also going through a light resto. I bought it with 18K on the clock, usual elderly single owner story. I've had this for years I think. No idea who the bird is, but she clearly likes the cable ties.

I also have a 4 year old Panda Multijet which is actually fine honest little car. I've kindly donated it to the missus, because every time she moans about the other cars, I threaten to take it away from her.

This is my Montego, Had it Just over a year. Its been on Carandclassic recently as i was getting a bit bored of it and fancied a change, but typical of shite cars there's not been too much interest! Keep changing my mind as to wether or not i want to keep it, about evey five minutes!

This is our everyday car that the wife uses for work, it replaced an MGTF when she became pregnant 3 and a bit years ago. Paid £1500 for it with a stack of bills including the famous head gasket being replaced, ours has the multi-layer gasket and has been perfectly reliable. These cars take a bit of a slagging from so called experts who shout head gasket at anything rover, but i love it, quick enough, good on fuel and brilliant handling, although this does mean a hard ride for a family car.

Accord is my daily (well, weekend and evening) driver. Good old bus this, bought by my dad at 3 years old with 18k on the clock, he handed it over after 5 years and 100k miles and it now has 177k on the clock. Really has caused no bother at all in that time - I think it's had a new exhaust downpipe and front shocks plus a secondhand ABS pump (relays stuck on and they're built into the unit) over and above the usual service items, although rather bafflingly one of the front foglights just fell out into the road the other week. Everything still works, nice cold air-con, auto gearbox smoother than Roger Moore. On the downside it's thirsty (averaging about 28mpg) and the bodywork is a bit scarred, but no rust yet.

The Avensis estate belongs to Mrs W, ideal for ferrying her and Little Miss W around and has done so for the last 30 months and 50k miles. 2-litre VVT-I has a fair bit of poke but blocked cats in the manifold means it doesn't really go until the revs hit 3k. Passes the MOT no bother as-is (the engine light will *just* stay off long enough for the duration of the test when reset) so I won't be forking out £300+ for replacements any time soon. Very economical for what it is and again everything just works. I don't like the lifeless steering and bouncy-castle ride/handling though (and this is with replacement shocks). The only real fault (not shown in the shonky photo) is that huge chunks of lacquer are peeling off every panel except the bonnet and front wings in some kind of automotive psoriasis. It doesn't seem to have been repainted in it's life but it's put me off buying another solid red car.

Flipping brilliant cars - I had an S1 for ages - the 1300 engine was cracking while it lasted - In the end I put a the usual 16v saxo engine in, I lost some of the character, but it was faster and less thirsty

It was a good combination - Handled well, <7 to 60 and but would hit the limiter in 5th in about a mile. I drove everywhere like an absolute cock for 8 months before realising I'd pushed my luck for long enough so I sold it and got a 1.4 lupo.

£750 worth of magic carpet ride. A bargain I wasnt even looking for, it was just in the right place at the right time.

Paintwork is mega shit, not too much grot and ive had to bin the boy racer cone filters and stupidly small steering wheel ( couldnt even see the speedo with it) for a proper air filter housing and a ridiculously large original steering wheel. Its had a big polish and S rims fitted to make it look slightly better quality shite.

For a 50 odd year old design its still a beauty to drive and ride comfort is utter quality and can still hold its own today.

Gotta love it.

That is seriously fit, especially for that kind of money, you need to invest in a polishing mop now and buff that bad boy up!
