That’s some proper 70s rust.

FWIW I think this is proper shitin’ (No G). If the normies wouldn’t be seen dead in it...

Posted

the rust on the tailgate is boshable, cut until you find something resembling metal, sika sheet of aluminium mesh from inside, dollop of grp putty, rattle can from poundshop

looks like top chod otherwise

Weld a baking tray into the boot! The umberplate dip looks like the right size.

His verdict?

"It's alright, is that"

High praise indeed. No doubt he is on eBay as we speak, seeking a 320cdi version :)

An absolute bargain, you've effectively had it for nothing.

Got to say, I quite like these, even though an ML500 tried to kill me once when I forgot it wasn't a car and I took yon bend on the slip road from the 876 onto the M9 just past the Kincardine bridge at the same 70-odd mph my 156 would go round at no problem and the thing started hopping from foot to foot like one of those lizards on hot sand.

That looks well bargainous and would probably export for more than you paid when it's done.

Have some tiny tiny review videos and also marvel at the new thread name - My brother came up with the nickname

To put what amazing value this thing is into perspective, I've just spent £1300 on a rebuilt turbo and DPF on Mrs N's ML. Yesterday she complained of a whistling from the turbo , spoke to my mate that did it " That'll be the gasket, knowing what a tight fucker you are I reused the old one!"

Today he's putting a new one on- the gasket set from Merc is £100, the total " Shouldn't be more than £250/300.....

And with her plate on it and that hole covered up , I bet most people couldn't tell the difference between a 2011 and a 2001.

Today was cleaning day..

I started in the boot. Evidence of dug hairs suggested this was not the cars first rodeo..

Judicious use of hoover for the carpet, and G101 + a scrubbing brush for the plastics brought everything up lovely

The rear seats were horrible, but again, the g101 and scrubbing brush made good improvement.

This is before

No after pic - I was too busy CLF (Cleaning Like Fuck)

It is a long and tall old tub - everything takes ages to do.

Then Skattrd turned up and we ajourned for a coffee:)

Once back, I continued with the interior clean, before giving it a quick jetwash prior to polishing

The paint is terrible. I think both bumpers have been repainted badly. Front wings are bubbling.

All doors are frilly on the bottom, and have random blebs in the middle of the panels.

The bonnet  paint was very flat, and it has a dent in the front of it. This was before polishing. Badgers arses have been known to be smoother. (Good arty shot though!)

And then there is the tailgate.

If you look up "optimism" in the dictionary, the definition is this picture:

Here's a close up of how it looked

Expecting nothing, the polisher was fired up.

Applying some elbow grease, and genuine* approved* Mercedes repair tape, we ended up with this.

A fair bit better, I'm sure you'll agree.

Just cover the tailgate with chequer plate for that authentic OLLI look

Looks much more presentable now! Just get a colour coded rattle can and spray the tape now!

Posted

I think I’ve got some spray paint that would be a close* match if you want to spray the tape with it.  Some kind of VAG colour if I remember right.

Looks pretty presentable now, good work.

I saw somebody who looked like they were doing the rear brakes on one of these while driving into Southend earlier. It was a dark blue one though.

I hasten to add that I was the one driving to Southend, there wasn't some mid journey brake changing heroics going on from the Mercedes owner... ?

I was looking at a black 02 one of these in my local yard today, every panel was fucked with rust.......... apart from the tailgate !

Lol, shouldn't be too difficult to change the v5..

Colour in the gaffa tape with some felt tips and it's like factory. There's at least one of these in upullit but from memory it was more rust than metal.

Posted

All you need is a Rover 75 sized rear number plate, it needs replacing anyway.

There are plenty of ML tailgates on eBay: £80-90 seems to be the going rate.

None this colour, obviously, but that may or may not be a concern...

This was borrowed by my brother on Sunday - helping him undertake his other hobby (besides shit old cars)

Apparently it 'cars' very well.

I had one last year; an early manual 270. Apparently earlier ones are built in austria rather than America. All seem to rot like fuck. Bought with no turbo boost but a quick check on the test drive revealed a hose had become detached so a quick fix. It had a very badly leaking injector and a mangled up cylinder head from a previous bodge repair. (There’s some sort of comedy way the injectors are attached to the cylinder head) The door cards were also tiger sealed on(!) , even though replacement clips are cheap as chips.

It also had a habit of locking itself if the keys were in or near the car ; I ended up having to break in via a rear quaterlight. I left it at a specialist to look at the cylinder head, the keys got lost and had to break into it a second time as personal papers were in the car. The car was then broken for spares. I’d forgotten about all that what a disaster!

Sounds like I am having a better ownership experience than you so far:)

Have you used this enough yet to work out what the mpgs are like?

I think some jeeps also came with the 5 pot Merc dizzle, which now has me thinking.

Should be fuelling up Wednesday I reckon. About 300 miles in so far.

I'm expecting 28-32ish

This has just become cheaper!

I've just collected the new washing machine (courtesy of a shiter). The ML swallowed it nae bother, saving me the £40 I would have needed to spend to hire a van.

So manmaths says £260 it owes me now
