I only browse the forum on my phone,as I don't have a PC any more.Up until yesterday,I got the version that fits phones better, with no signatures showing Now I'm getting the version  you get on a PC with the text being much smaller. Is this something I've done by accident,& how can I get it back to how it was?

You might have knocked this in the web browser options (see the blue arrows on the pictures below)

Exactly what I'd done.

Thank you 👍

Have my eyes drastically improved overnight or is the font bigger this morning? Feel like I've zoomed in slightly!

I'm wondering the same thing too! Certainly haven't touched anything on the theme settings in quite a while.

What are you on, android and chrome?

Looking at other sites like the BBC News, they look bigger too. I'm wondering if there was a Chrome update that bumped up the size of everything.

Posted

Yeah Android/Chrome. Probably been listening in to me saying my close vision is deteriorating, same way I get adverts for things I've discussed within earshot of Alexa

I've noticed that all sites seem to be rendering differently and zoomed up. So presumably an update has buggered things.

Is anyone else finding embedded YouTube vids crashing out the browser? Seems to be hitting chrome and brave for me..

Something weird going on right now - clicking on 'unread topics' gives a oops page with error EX0 more often than not

Posted

As you were, it seems to have fixed itself now, unless a boffin was tinkering in the background.

The search indexing service is on a different server to the main site. I think the hosting provider drops connections between the two occasionally as I see the odd error stored in the forum error log.

I need to do a full rebuild of the main server to bring it to the latest Debian version. When I do that I think I'll consolidate everything into a monolithic server again.

Is there a way to search a topic for posts by a particular author, without including a search term? I've been playing around typing various things into the search box and the address bar with no success.

Probably other ways of doing it but if you go to a profile, tap on the newspaper icon (next to the send message icon) and it'll change to all posts by that user and look like this

That's how I would find a post if it was recent, or I knew the date that it was posted, but as far as I can tell there's no way to filter that by a specific topic, meaning that I'd have to look through 13 pages in the case of myself.

Captureautoshitetopicauthorsearch.PNG.a4d0a11accdefa124ff5c57176e72c77.PNG

This is an example of what I want to do, but I need to put something where I've typed "placeholder" that will show all of my posts in this topic. I did try listing the alphabet and having it set to "any of my search term words", but that didn't show all of them, and obviously wouldn't work for a post that was just an image.

This feels like something that should be possible, even just by editing the URL, but I can't figure it out! Some forums have the option to only show OP posts, which would presumably work in a similar way on the backend...

Yeah I have seen the errors in the log. It's basically the forum software not being able to talk to the Elasticsearch server. They reside on different VMs and are attached using the hosting providers virtual private network. The Elasticsearch docker instance is running the whole time the errors occur and appears to be happy & stable. It's certainly not lost or restarted. When these errors occur, they happen for 30 to 60 seconds and then go away. Sometimes this happens once in a week, sometimes more.

I think it's the hosting provider virtual private network deciding to stop letting traffic flow over it on random points. Can't see anything else what would be causing it given both ends are running stable.

At some point I need to rebuild this main server to bring it to the latest OS version. When I do that, I'll pull the Elasticsearch service onto the same VM and have it all as one monolithic setup again. The only reason I split the ES instance out was that I didn't know quite how resource intensive it would be. Apart from RAM (which it's usage is stable at), the CPU resources are quite low and intermittent. So I don't see any issues in bring it back to a single VM. I would need to move to an instance with more RAM and so makes more sense to sort it all once I rebuild the server instance.

TL;DR I know what it is, it's annoying but infrequent and a refresh 60s later will have it gone away. I can't do a whole lot about it without major work but I plan to do that at some point soon.

Best analogy I can think is that the inbuilt sat nav screen keeps randomly disappearing. Everytime it does it you go FFS but doesn't stop you carrying on. You are also aware that to fix it, you need to stop everything and pull it apart for a few hours to sort it.

All while being fully aware that mid next year that the whole rig becomes EOL and no parts will be available after then. So while you can hand make replacement parts (i.e. build from source), that'll be a monumental effort when you could just get a replacement.

However that new replacement needs setting up and configuring for use. So while the wheels on the bus are still rolling and everything else is working fine otherwise, you're not in a huge rush right now to sort it.

I just need a solid spare day to sit down and set up a replacement. Then leave it up here for people to play with and once happy, flick the switch to move over.

Is it just my end, or is anyone else finding the site a bit slow to respond since the downtime earlier today?

Posted

Quite possibly will be. As the server was rebooted, stuff that is regularly accessed ends up in RAM cache will slowly be filled back up again. Usually take a hour or so for that to settle properly. Likewise I think the hosting provider is still getting their network speeds back up again.

Hopefully by later today/tomorrow everything should be back to near normal.

Don't k now if this has been asked before but when I scroll down to the bottom of a page like this, then click the prev/next button, it always takes me to the bottom of the desired page and I have to scroll back up to the top. Is that how the site works or is it at my end?

Both Chrome and Firefox mobile for me scrolls to the top on page change in a thread.

Maybe try clearing your cache and see if that fixes things? Is it the latest version of Firefox?

Latest Firefox on a Windows laptop. Don't have Chrome on it. I'll try clearing cache, see if that works.

Chrome on my phone has started doing this.

Don't access using a computer anymore.

Android app, all up to date.

I noted this problem a while back, and it's not as bad for me as it was, but it still happens and it's still bloody annoying! OS's Silk/Kindle, Firefox/Ubuntu and Chrome/Android.

Is it still broken when trying it in incognito mode? Does it behave differently when logged out?

Problem is it works fine for me and always has done, so can't easily debug the issue and see what's going on.

I'm on Android 14 using Chrome on a Pixel 5. So possibly similar to what everyone else uses.

Have a play with the 'Content View Behaviour' options in Account Settings (on desktop, this can be found via the drop down list under your avatar at the top RHS corner of the screen).

See if using the different options makes a difference. They are:

  • When opening content...
    • Take me to comments I haven't read
    • Take me to the beginning
    • Take me to the latest comment

Can we have some pinned thread in the For Sale section for site-related merchandise?

I can't remember who has what - @worldofceri does a sticker, IIRC @ruffgeezer was doing the dealership one, and at one point @catsinthewelder was doing hoodies and shizz. Other members were doing stuff too, but I'm too old/tired/full of works-Christmas-do-buffet to think straight.
I'll gladly start it if we're in agreement.

I still have plenty of dealer stickers here.

I think @Jim Bell may have had ArnoldShark style Auto shite stickers?

Maybe mugs too, soon. Not a bad idea IMHO

Just a bit of a question surrounding notifications - on the bell icon, I may see 5/6/7/8 new notifications, or whatever. I click on it, scroll to the first unread at the bottom, click into it to see what happened, then if I want to move onto the next one, they've all been marked as read so I sometimes have a hard time tracing my steps back to which one is next.

The main issue being is that I keep missing people's replies to my posts, sometimes I don't get a notification saying that someone has quoted me, but this does seem to be very random. I frequently only find out that someone has replied to me upon opening a thread and scrolling from the last unread post, if I hadn't revisited the thread I would never have known someone had quoted me.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does this happen to anyone else?

The notifications have always cleared for me when I've tapped on either the bell or message icon. Maybe a setting in your profile that can change that behaviour?
