A few years ago I was asked to sell a metallic blue 86 Porsche 911  . Quite a rare one , i won't say what model, but most desirable ...with wads of history ,no gaps,a known  ex magazine car..the real deal.

When picking the car up , there was this number plate hanging on the garage wall , so I took it , knowing the car had various numbers over the years, I assumed it was allocated to this car at some time , and therefor the new owner might like it . Well I would..bit of the cars history innit?   A quick look on the internet  said it was ex blue 1986 Porsche 911 too .

Anyway ,we sold the car ,but i forgot about the plate , it was still in my possession . I contacted the buyer about a year later, and he said no way was it ever on his car .

So I've just found it again..

Out of curiosity I did a Total car check , it still comes up as a Porsche 911, but exported in 2014 !! "  My " car is definitely still in this country , albeit on yet another private plate , and never exported .

I wonder if an owner somewhere would like this old plate , but I've no idea where the car is !!  Anyone want it to hang on their garage wall??

Further to that, would TKU 336 number , be on retention ? . I'd imagine it's a £1000 plate ,why would you just discard that ?

Disappoint. I clicked the link and tried to slect either of my cars from the dropdown - because I have so few working brain cells I'm unable to simultaneously imagine the front of my car, AND a personalised numberplate - and neither of them are on there.

It does say a lot about what sort of cars people who want personalised plates have though.

Haven’t got my book handy, but would be interesting to see where and when it was first issued. # anorak

I think if I were you I'd just hang it on my garage wall and bask in being able to tell the story!

TKU is Rotherham, March 1960.

If nobody wants the plate to hang on their wall I would pay postage for it!

KU was Bradford until the 1974 reorganization when it was transferred to South Yorkshire (Sheffield).

Rotherham was always ET until 1974.

How did you find out the year of issue ?. I used to use a 'where was it issued' section of one of the plate companies, but they have tKen that facility down for some reason.

FKU 2 would be a plate and a half

What happens to a personalised plate if your car is written off or stolen?

DVLA says that you only keep it if the car has current MOT and RFL. What about classic cars that do not require an MOT and are zero tax?

As has been said - County Borough Council of Bradford, March 1960...

March 1960 must have been a busy month of vehicle sales in Bradford because...there were two registration runouts that month...

TAK   01/60

TKU   03/60

TKW  03/60

TKY   04/60

UAK  05/60

UKU  07/60

UKW 09/60

UKY  10/60

VAK   01/61

Effectively they have an MOT and they have to apply to have tax applied at the zero rate.

Which only tells you the month(s) of issue, I then (mis-read) the issuing authority from a 1960 Observer's Automobiles.

Alternatively I could have phoned my mate Paul who is a talking UK Registration encyclopedia but that would have taken much longer......

I had to pay the good people at DVLA to transfer the plate off and place it on retention when my car was written off.  They then allocated another number to the destroyed car.  I am sure if I didnt pay for the transfer then upon confirmation of the cars destruction the Doovla would list it for sale somewhere as they ultimate "own" the plate.

I have a book that details the licensing district but not the year of issue. I stopped using my book when so much info appeared online, such as http://nice-reg.co.uk/info/area-of-issue-codes-for-classic-suffix-and-prefix-number-plates.html

My book, something like, tracing you car history only details only lists the issuing district

I seem to remember AA yearbooks had a list of where car registrations were issued. Back in the days when AA mechanics on motorcycles used to salute oncoming cars displaying AA badges.
