Just out of interest, if I was looking for something shite/average/cheap with a petrol 1.5 litre engine - i.e. under 1549cc for lower tax, but larger than a 1.4, what would be on the list?(I'm guessing mainly a load of J-tin!)Cheers,Mark.

Rover 214, boxy or bubble. They're very popular with amateur rally people with good reason - they go like stink! Later bubble ones had 103bhp I think.Looked after, head gaskets not the terrifying prospect they might be, plus you can get a better gasket now. Head gasket fear means that they're dirt cheap.

Dollomite 1500, Allegro 1500.More recently, a Daewoo Nexia or equivalent, or a Honda Civic 1.5 VTEC, with 114bhp.

Mazda 323, I’d happily have a 1.5GLX. Slightly older, the Cherry/Sunny models which ran until 1986 maxed out at 1.5. Acclaim, or Rover 213, both of which have the Honda engine. Golf Mk1 GLS?

Rover 214 SEI Comes with alloys, half leather seats and a reliable Honda engine (Just check for the usual headgasket ..etc)

Sorry that's wrong. The 214 has the K-Series engine which is a Rover engine. Boxy 216s had the Honda engine. Later 216s (bubble) had an enlarged K series. The 214SEi is indeed a fine car though.

*Pedant mode* Thats going to be a K series engine. Only particular 1.6 models had the Honda lump. *Pedant mode Off*

1999/2000 Mazda 323 Estatey hatch kinda subaru-esque thingy if you squint with one eye covered in the dark..............neighbour has one. It uses tyres and pads like any other heapp, and strangely anti-roll bar links......otherwise, oddly interesting....cheapish now too...........

Lada Riva / Samara both came with a 1.5

Golf Mk1 GLS?

Yup, loads of Mk1 Golfs had the 1.5 (1457cc) engine (including mine), 70bhp as standard which isn't too bad. Is the Golf shite though?

If it's dull/average/cheap you need, how about a Hyundai Accent 1.5?

it's cheap, has a Mitsubishi engine (as seen in Protons) and is dull as ditchwater, you know it makes sense... :D

(picture for illustration purposes only  also available with 5-doors)

Had one of those Accents on hols in Crete a few years back, I thought it was great!Only thing is, they don't seem to be very cheap.

Surely you need a Chrysler Alpine at 1442cc?

We all need one - I think I may be one of the several forum members who will actually burst next time one appears on ebay.

I'd forgotten about the good old Hyundai Pony, 1.5 Mitsi engine like the Accent, but with the blandest styling EVAR.

Here is my old one, as you can see I tried to jazz it up by painting the wheels the lairyest colour I could find.

(If anyone ever sees this one about/on ebay I'd like to buy it back because I'm a glutton for punishment)

How about

Honda Civic (Rover 400/45 shape) with the 1493cc VTEC-E engine. Bloody economical and very, very well built. You can blag a later shape (R-Y reg) with a/c and a full history for under a grand.

My experience of Daewoos (sp?) is that they're fugging rubbish. Under 1.5 you should have plenty of options and I'd suggest any of the following: Peugeot 205, Astra Mk3 8V, almost anything Japanese (especially a Honda Ballade 1.5) or a Hi-and-dry.I'd like to recommend a Mk5/6/7 Escort as they're so cheap at the moment you almost can't give them away. But they're bleeding crap so I can't.

Later Almera (w reg onwards), 1497cc. Or is that too new/too dear/too many toys for full shite points?

They are a bit shit with their ever-slackening timing chains and self destructing gearboxes.

+1I watched Gregory's Girl a few days ago and almost creamed myself when I realised the car in one scene being driven on a driving lesson was a green Alpine...
