I know the answer, as a bit of an Eastern Bloc fancier.

It’s the fuel flow gauge (sort of economy gauge), and it looks a bit like the number of bars showing your mobile phone battery but made up of a few distinct lights.  Sarcastically known as the Mouse Cinema, or Mauskino in German.

They never had a fuel gauge as standard, it was a dip stick for the petrol tank.

Almost peak Audi era. Beautifully bolted together, no fussy gizmos and an interior that dares to be different. It wears almost 200k miles beautifully, too. They were definitely built to last. The B5 A4s I owned were similarly robust.

I always found it funny how they could engineer a gauge like this but a pesky fuel gauge was beyond them
