Anyhoo, any good reason why copied CD's give up in weeks, while 'genuine' ones dont? I've used many brands of CD'S and writers, and they're only used for work, but I'm fed up constantly replacing them. Any ideas?

Pre recorded CDs have the data physically pressed onto them so they don't degrade. CDRs burn the data onto a light sensitive dye, and some of the dyes are shite and break down really quickly.

I've burnt hundreds of discs over the years and the only ones I've had go bad were a batch of really cheap unbranded CDs, and some pricey double layer DVDs (not worth the bother). But they've all been stored under ideal conditions, and I'm still not expecting them to last forever.

'Twas an old Passata, and iirc, the guy was done for failure to declare to the Revenue. I may be wrong, but I'm sure it's the case that you can run whatever you like, so long as you declare it as road vehicle fuel.

At least a token amount...

...from when they cost £7.00 each for a blank one and my writer cost £1500.00

Training place I worked at then, had 1 writer (and about 1/3rd of PC's with a CD-ROM), and we kept the discs in a locked cabinet, away from the Velcro-fingered 16 year old neds. Them was the days...

Latest DVD writer was free, as was the last one. Best o' gear, too!

Aaah, I see. I blithely assumed the process was the same, but higher quality on thicker discs in the professional plants. Would explain also why copied CD's last longer in the house stereos; the head units in the trucks seem to cause the discs to heat up quite a bit. Which would break the dyes down even faster. The house stereos and car multichangers I've had don't seem to do that.

What's wrong with taking your old oil to the dump? Old petrol can and all the councils I've ever lived in accept it for free

Besides cherry is there any other 'alternative' fule that cannot be legally used?

I recall reading you can lob paraffin and used engine oil into diesel and they'll run on it (mixed with proper diesel of course) but I also recall watching some DOUGHNUT* on Roadwars getting into bother with the coppers for using old engine oil as fuel, but he might have been in a van which have different rules I think. So can I use old engine oil in my car as fuel?

*He might have been a valve, or even a nugget.

A van doesn't have different rules.

You can chuck whatever you want in your fuel tank but you should pay duty on it, plant oils are exempt up to 2500l per year. Used engine oil is horrible stuff to deal with so I wouldn't bother unless I was desperate.

I don't know, dumps in my region have tanks for old engine oil.

Ta, for some reason I thought commercials were not allowed to run on bio diesel and old oil.

Will: nothing wrong with taking old oil to the dump, but it's better for me if I can get free fuel out of it.

If you're dead keen on trying it Cavette, filter it through one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sock-filter-b ... 0758976431, carry a spare fuel filter and don't mix it with vegetable oil because it'll turn to jelly. As I've found out, attempting to run on used engine oil, off road*.

You bring a woman home, you can only find the garage door key, no prophylactics oh wait what's this on the shelf...

I thankyou, that's tres helpful. I reckon those filter socks will also be GR10 4 USED VEG too, and hopefully I'll be scoring some of that this week.

Does anyone have any experience of tyres from Marangoni or Kleber?

Was it Kleber tyres that they used on Concorde? that sort of sprang in to my mind as I read your post.

Posted

Yep, just found this:

Air France originally used French Kleber tires, and had several blowouts on takeoff that caused the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board to write its 1981 warning. The airline started using Goodyear in the mid-1980s, and its policy is to not use retreads on Concorde, an observer said. British Airways uses Dunlop tires. The Concorde main gear has a four-wheel truck, and the gear leg height is roughly 13 ft.

Its amazing the useless shit in my brain that never gets asked at quiz nights.

Kleber tyres used to be very good, their handling was excellent and they were a decent 'mid range' brand that were better than a lot of supposedly better makes. That was sort of mid-late 1980's though.

Marangonis seem to be priced as if they were in some way adequate, but they aren't. There aren't many tyres on my blacklist- just Federal, Vredstein and Hankook, but Marangoni has joined the list. I have never seen a tyre with less traction.

One for the bikers...

I have my CBT booked for next Saturday. On my counterpart paper license I have "A" in the provisional entitlements, but only B,B1,f,k,p (and 122) on my photocard. Is this what I should have or have I/the DVLA managed to spaz something up along the way somewhere?

Your fine, provisional entitlements don't show on the photocard. Enjoy it, they teach everything from scratch,

Dealer "selling on behalf of owner", on eBay. Does SOGA still apply?
