It's a mike for a wired handsfree kit (if you get my meaning). There's a similar get-up in my Jaaaaag. The kits aren't cheap, and cost a bloody bomb to have professionally fitted. My car had it fitted when I bought it by the previous giffer owner.

These are the cat's cock, though

Anyone ever driven a Ford Consul Mk2 1703cc? What do they drive like and live with?, Are they a real gutless tank or a nice cool cruiser?.

I've seen one i like, made a offer that involves my Cortina and the amount i was going to spend on it's respray and the sellers shown an interest, I'm now wondering if it's such a good idea as i like my Cortina but always loved the Mk2 shape Consul/Zodiac./Zephyr styling.

60BHP, Trig? Your 'Tina must be pushing 100. I'm sure there'd be a fair old difference in the driving experience.

The Zephyr Mk2 I tried was a 2.6 and that wasn't quick. A 1.7 will be slower than continental drift.

I know a chap with a Mk2 Farnham with a 302 in, that is acceptable.

If it was my choice, I'd get your Mk3 bodywork done, fit a four branch manifold, get the carb jetted to suit and enjoy it. They go surprisingly well with a very mild bit of tweakery, the Mk3.

This is how I'm thinking now, the Consul is stunning, I've seen it in the flesh but I'm only 32 and I'm not a leisurely driver, I think once the cool novelty has worn off that i will get bored of pushbikes overtaking me in 30mph zones.

I've been looking at 4 branches as the studs in my manifold have worn making the exhaust spin round and hit the bodywork, I'd have to remove the manifold to weld in new studs so i may was well change it for a sportier one, also plan on a K&N for it soon and i need the carb setting up and it still splitters a bit and is a sod to start from cold even after fitting a non return valve.

I'm gonna get the bodywork tarted up this winter hopefully, been quoted £1500-£2000 to do it which is a lot of money but it will really brighten the old girl up.

Whack a decent cam and exhaust manifold in it, and later, add a pair of DCOE's or Dellortos, and a big valve head. It'll go like fuck, and sound pretty fucking marvellous. The Pinto, whilst a heavy old lump, is very tunable with care, and the hardest part is setting cams and followers up, as the wrong combination will ruin idle speeds and pickup from low revs. You could piss 150 brake, and leave a number 11 wherever you decide to. Then call the AA to take you home, as you've killed your diff.

simply put...YES, they are slow, antiquated, but very cool........ I got bored and Put a 3.0 V6 in mine

if a rear door handle doesn't work, is that an MOT failure ?

If you mean the exterior handle, yes.

From MOT manual...

Method of inspection

B.Doors

1.

Open and close the driver’s and passenger’s doors. Check that:

a.

each door latches securely in the closed position

b.

the driver’s and front passenger doors can be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle

c.

any other passenger doors can be opened from outside the vehicle.

Reason for rejection

1.

a.

A driver’s or any passenger’s door does not latch securely in the closed position

b.

a driver’s or front passenger’s door cannot be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle using the relevant control in each case

c.

a passenger door cannot be opened from outside the vehicle using the relevant control.

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s06000201.htm

Driver and front passenger door have to open from inside and outside.

Rear passenger doors have to open from outside "using the relevant control".

So if you took off the door handle the relevant control is no longer there, and you pass?? :?

The door would have to have the handle removed, and the door welded shut, and the lines filled in to a reasonable standard to then pass - I can't see many people doing that !!

Just perusing ebay, and typed in Crown Victoria; have been meaning to look at the prices since I had one as a rental in the USof A a few years back. (Was a free upgrade - paid for a shitty small thing, got that BONUS) and found this beastie:

$(KGrHqJ,!i!E-0+m0ZJ,BP6frE3uOw~~_12.JPG

It's a POlice interceptor, 4.6 V8 from 20074, and up for 10k, but that's not the question.

It's kicking(!) out 210bhp which is BALLS, why so little? Surely as an "interceptor" it should have been uprated a bit? Also I'm surmising, tune up bits would be fairly simple, and available? (Not that I've got £10k to piss up the wall...but one day....)

Damn that Crown Vic's expensive. Thought they were 250bhp though?

Posted

I wonder is that the MG ZT/Rover 75 V8 in a different guise or state of tune? I always though 260 horse from that engine was a bit shit, when a Jag AJV6 3 litre makes 240.

Posted

The ZT V8 lump was in boggo tune, same as a Lincoln towncar but with better exhaust set-up. Around 260 bhp.

It's a piece of piss to get a lot more power from 'em.

after a huge amount of pissing about i have just collected these

$T2eC16Z,!)0E9s37HkiKBQGu)Kuf)!~~60_12.JPG

the wheels are marked 13weller95 and s008 4095et12

advertised as weller racing steel wheels with a 4x98 pcd , but with the implication they had been removed from a corsa.

i had to ask 5 times over a period of 3 weeks for a pickup address, each time getting no useful location info in reply

but as this is not the G.O.M. thread i have a (stupid) question or two

1. does this mean they are 4x95 pcd (or 4x95.25/4x3.75 as i cant find anything with a 95mm pcd)?

2. what will they fit? rover, triumph, standard ?

3. are they worth anything as i have nothing to put them on?

4. is question 3 answered by buying something from question 2?

thanks in advance

4x98 is a Fiat/Lada/FSO PCD if memory serves me correct - but 95 will indeed fit Trumps and later Rovers, but the offset looks like they'd fit a Blue Bond just nicely...!

i was hoping for a scene tax bonus of 4x100 or a set of wheels for my uno van :? mostly bought for the tyres which were sold as "hardly used"

Can't help with the wheels, but are those winter tyres?

don't think so but i have not really had time to look at them closely, i hope not

Do practical jokers still stick potatoes up exhausts?

i have only ever used bananas

Posted

Potatoes are more effective, due to greater density. Spuds also make an excellent "make do" silencer for a handgun.

How about a used oil filter? The autoshite way...

Posted

I'd be surprised if they fit a Corsa as they (the Vauxhall) are 4x100.

ebayer wasn't even there for the collection, but his dad said that they were off his sons - girlfriends - dads - kitcar - that never got finished

If you run a Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 down to zero fuel and then wonder why it has cut out after starting perfectly and moving 2 feet followed by multiple attempts to start it with no success, are you likely to have caused any expensive death like other cars you read about with exploding fuel pumps and such or will popping a couple of jerry cans of unleaded in the tank solve all issues?

Posted

If it's a petrol it'll quite probably be fine. I'd change the fuel filter soon though...

RE: XUD cambelt changes.

Internet says 40,000 or 4 years. I reckon mine is due a belt change soon, God knows what sort of job it'll be

XUD 306 belts are a doddle tro do, hardest bit is finding the hole for the flywheel lock......

+1

The trick is to make a tool, about 10 - 12 inches long, basically just a rod with a loop on the end.

Like this:

O----------

Something equivalent of M8 diameter would be fine.

Remove injector wires and injector lines, slide the tool horizontally down the block behind the starter motor, with your finger in the loop of the tool and the point against the shoulder of the engine, gearbox end. With a slight pressure on the loop end and a bit of a poke about you should find the hole in the engine shoulder no problem. When the pointy drops into the hole, you will feel it come up against the flywheel. Just beware you have to do it blind, there is no way you will see that hole. Leave the tool there, turn the engine over slowly by hand, and with a gentle pressure on the loop. The rod should then drop into the hole on the flywheel and hey, presto, you have TDC on the block without too much of a ballache.

And considering water pumps - IMHO they should be okay if they feel okay, its a really simple design and unless the bearings are buggered it will be okay. Its personal preference really.

All I have to say is good luck!
