willswitchengage Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 MEEM, like bream the fish. Sort of like a brief internet sensation, or idea, like "breading": No idea what the etymology is though...
Negative Creep Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Meme (rhymes with "cream") is, to steal from Wiki: is "an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture."[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate and respond to selective pressures.[3] SO for internet parlance, that's lolcats, pedobear, Chuck Norris jokes, forever alone, troll face, Success Kid etc etc etc
SambaS Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Do I have to update my Fuelly signature myself? I was sure it updated automatically but it hasn't in 12 hours or more.
barefoot Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 no, it updates itself, but not always as soon as you think it should
SambaS Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I think there was a technical error, I've just edited an entry and it has changed
Ross_K Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 No idea.... er, what is a "meme" exactly? Or even approximately? It's like the internet version of an "in-joke", ie. funny to a group certain group of people, but an outsider would be none the wiser. Hipster Cop for example: Or Herp Derp www.knowyourmeme.com is the best place to start - it's like the Encyclopaedia Britannica of memes.
MrDuke Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Does any actual damage result from leaving a cambelt cover off (for a while)? The screws on mine are missing, meaning it's rubbing on the belt all the time, and the screws aren't the kind I'll have knocking about in the toolbox (about 4-5 inches long, only threaded at the very end). I'll track down some more before long. Probably.
SambaS Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 In 2009 my Escort didn't come with one 20,000 miles later it aint broke
Cavcraft Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I'd imagine it's there to stop shit and stones and what have you being thrown onto the cam belt and possibly cogs.
MrDuke Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Well, there's still a lower section that covers the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the belt, so that should stop most of what comes off the wheel. Also, I'll be saving at least 4 ounces so my 0-60 should be reduced appreciably.

Cavcraft Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 If a Ford Transit (2004) diesel engine fan 'rattles now and again, but doesn't do it all the time' is that a sign of imminent DMF explosion?

Father Ted Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Quickone gentsIs the 2.2 diesel found in the Almera Tino the Renault one that likes to eat itself and then shit out little bits of engine down the exhaust?
Rocket88 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Quickone gentsIs the 2.2 diesel found in the Almera Tino the Renault one that likes to eat itself and then shit out little bits of engine down the exhaust? I think that applies to any modern Renault lump..................

willswitchengage Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Quickone gentsIs the 2.2 diesel found in the Almera Tino the Renault one that likes to eat itself and then shit out little bits of engine down the exhaust? Nope it's a Nissan design, I used to look at the NAs on the ebay hoping to finding a reliable runaround but apparently they get the usual stretched timing chains and problematic fuel pumps. The Renault 2.2 is a 12v, iirc...
scaryoldcortina Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I picked up "What Car" in asda just to read the cover story (OMG modern car MPG not as good as claimed shock) and was surprised by the sheer complexity of their fuel consumption measuring method - they sampled the tailpipe gas to measure CO2 content and derived MPG from this, with help from engine data like MAF and throttle position. The test rig on the back of the test cars looks a lot like Dr Emmet Brown's DeLorian My question is quite simple - what was wrong with measuring how much fuel the car used over a given distance?
willswitchengage Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 My question is quite simple - what was wrong with measuring how much fuel the car used over a given distance? Because that would give an accurate real-life impression of the car's fuel economy and wouldn't allow manufacturers to mis-sell SUVs to naive buyers. Officially, a Nissan Qashncarry (62mpg) is more economical than a Citroen AX 1.5D (55mpg). http://www.fuelly.com/car/
RobT Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 How the frig do you remove a pulley from an alternator? I need to remove from the old alternator and put it on the new one.
John F Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 How the frig do you remove a pulley from an alternator? I need to remove from the old alternator and put it on the new one. You could either use a 3-legged puller or give it gentle taps with a hammer.
Mr Lobster Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Sold a car, buyer has paid me by bank transfer and is sending a Shiply type to collect. Whats best to do about the V5? Do I just fill his details and send to DVLA without his signature or just sign it on his behalf?
Albert Ross Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 How the frig do you remove a pulley from an alternator? I need to remove from the old alternator and put it on the new one. Depends entirely on the alternator concerned. Some you whizz off with a windy gun, some you need a special tool, which caters for a LHT clutched pulley, and a splined shaft. The tool is about £45..... +VAT. Then there's all points between.

Cost me £50 so I'm a bit cautious about giving it a whack!
Albert Ross Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 You don't keep it still, you use a windy gun and pulse it off.
RobT Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Okey doke Albert, I'll probably have to take it somewhere and get it done.
MrDuke Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Are there any known fuelling problems with K11 Micras? My neighbour 2 doors down regularly spends 20-30 minutes of a morning trying to coax her one into life, and it's getting fairly bloody annoying . It turns over fine, and usually splutters into life at some point, but she then has to rev the nuts off it, otherwise it stalls and the while process starts again. If there's a known weak point with a relatively easy fix, I'll happily go and sort it for her just so I don't have to listen to it re-boring itself every sodding morning. I'm not quite 'helpful' enough to spend hours tracing the problem, though
