Check you have suitable clearance around the front valance/spoiler.........

XM height controller laughs at the idea of clearance issues ;)

Although as it's a sinker, it'll probably settle onto the ramps?

I currently only have trolley jacks / axle stands. What would I gain from buying some ramps?

Ramps are a bit safer if you're doing a job that involves a bit of wrestling. A housebrick in front of the ramps can help with valance clearance issues.

I was just about to post a ramps vs axle stands question!

Ramps or axle stands, which is safer?

What potentially could cause a car to come down on ramps? I.e. what is commonly done wrong and fuck it up.

I only have stands atm and I have to admit, I'm always petrified of going under cars using them! I end up putting the jack under and anything else I can find, to safe guard against the car coming back down. I also don't like to spend any more than the bare essential time underneath.

What stops the ramp scooting forwards when you try driving up them?

Axle stand question too...

I have 1.5tonne rated each, 3 tonne rated pair of stands. Am I in the rated limits (and so safe) to use them to support a 1.8tonne car? I.e. the Saab.

You are well within the spec of the axle stands. Remember that you are not lifting all the cars weight, you still have one end or one side on the ground.

Even fully in the air with two pairs of stands, thats six tons capacity holding up 1.8 tons.

As for ramps, I have a couple of pairs of the cheap ones made from angle iron....

They can slip forwards as you try to go up them with the non-driven wheels, ie reversing a FWD car up. I try to wedge them with bricks or something or in extreme cases a length of rope tied around the bottom rung and laid flat under the car and under the front wheel will hold it.

Once up, chock the wheels that are still on the ground to prevent the car rolling down off them.

I spotted this on youtube a while back.....looks nifty.

Put a short plank on the bottom rung. Drive onto plank, ramp then can't slip.

With axle stands, put the wheel ( inc the spare if just one side) under the sill. Then if it topples, it will land on the rubber, not you!

Storage is a pain for ramps.

If you hang them on the wall make sure they're above head height.

(Mine are now stored in the garden.)

You can wrap a 6 inch or so wide strip of carpet around the bottom rung of the ramp too . About 6 foot in total ( 3 foot doubled up ) . The car then drives on the carpet and holds the ramps in the right place

new front pads for the volvo.  pagid or brembo?

Pagg....

Brembo aftermarket aren't the same as brembo race or oe fit . I put brembos on the Saab ( discs and pads ) and discs warped really quickly .

I've fitted hundreds and hundreds of sets of apec stuff with no issues.

Posted

Always good to know what the experts deem worthy of fitting, I'll buy stuff because I recognise the brand but it's a bit of a lucky dip at times

APEC for brakes . Fit loads of Delphi Susp bits but feel that moog are better . Fag/ skf for bearings . Gates for belts / kits .

Bosch recon rotating elecs are shit - had two come faulty out of the box and at least one fail within 6 months .

Milner off road good for jap 4x4 stuff .

Mann are bloody good filters and I've had problems with fram in the past so don't use those .

Luk and valeo are the only clutches I fit

Blueprint seems really cheap but never had any issues yet with their stuff

Hope that helps

I've posted this in my XM thread, but I'm asking again because it's bothering me.....

Is it OK to leave a Citroën hydro car jacked up on one corner like this:

6e79d204baff5d8a9e296263c50eb50b.jpg

The suspension has sunk as it does, both wheels on the drivers side are off the ground now

I'm not gonna wreck the suspension?

It won't wreck the suspension but it will act strangley when you fire it up.  Get it down off the stands without starting it then don't put any part of your body underneath it until its been out on a run.  My BX dropped suddenly after being jacked up (with the engine running and the suspension set to high) while I was trying to fish the stand out from underneath.  I was fine but that was only because I was lucky.

I'm mega paranoid about being under cars....it's got a spare wheel under the passenger side of the front subframe, an axle stand and I always leave the trolley jack in too just in case. I've also put a concrete block under the wheel I've raised which probably does nothing other than give me the perception of safety!

People keep warning me about trusting the car not to decide to drop down from high. I shiver thinking about it as I've seen how long it takes to rise again!

How did you change the ATF? It usually takes about four drain and refill changes to replace most of the ATF.

I was clearing out my Dad's garage at the weekend and found these 2CV bits from when I was going to take delivery of a free ex-race 2CV until inter-department politics meant it was scrapped instead :(

Does anyone know what they are (they look like part of the heat ducting system?) if they are worth selling and if so for how much? I could do with some money for new drop links!
