A MiniDisc changer is ultra-rare, I would have loved one in my bumpy polo. Instead I had a CD changer so I could listen to 3-second clips of songs between skips. Eventually binned it in favour of a MD single slot head unit.

I have seen OEM double-DIN units with CD and Minidisc slots in the front, but they're usually removed from JDM grey imports. I'd be very tempted by one, if I had more confidence in my re-wiring abilities.

Has the real Vladimir Putin joined AS?

Yes, because no-one ever lies on the internets

Obviously it's the work of Vladislav Surkov. Someone should tell Adam Curtis that he's now working through crap car forums, he could put it in his next documentary.

I would imagine they have ISO connectors, so they'll either plug straight in, or just buy a pair of ISO blocks for an older car and they're a piece of pee to wire up. 8 wires for speakers, perm power, switched power, ground will sort it.

Not sure if Japanese radios tune the same on FM though - American units only tune even numbers or something stupid.

Despite the pictures being the right way up on my computer, half the time they appear upside down when posted on the website.  How do I fixicate this?

I think that's AM. IIRC European radios go in 9kHz steps and American radios 10kHZ

I think that was what i was remembering, although luckily it also applies to FM, we go 87.5 to 108MHz and the Americans go 87.9 to 107MHz.

However the Japanese are weird, and use 76 to 90MHz, so if you fit a JDM double din unit you won't be able to pick up Radio 1.

(Sales of JDM head units shoot up on this revelation)

Excellent. All I need now is a Japanese-specific glitch that prevents me picking up Radio 2 between 12:00 and 17:00.

Right then, AS hive mind...

Can I use €uros in Sofia, or will I need to get some Bulgarian lev?

Posted

They were the standard dealer fit stereos in grey import mk2 MR2s/Celicas to replace the Japanese stereo (with incompatible radios). You can also get them with a Minidisc player in place of the tape.

I have one of those head units in my JDM Estima, the radio has cracking reception, and works in our normal FM range (maybe it's been converted). Sadly the CD bit doesn't work, and there's a broken cassette stuck in the deck.

Is there someone on here who does vehicle moving? I'm looking at that p6 on Retro Rides and would need to get it Moved from Chesterfield to Ayrshire.

I've got it on the usual transport sites but it's still a bit salty.

Krujoe might be able to help too.

A.R.S.E. delivery service may be available but I'm quite busy just now - I see it's sold to someone in Scotland - is it you?

I recently bought an early BMW 530d estate for my son and we have no idea what this bit is. It has a full sized spare wheel under the rear floor and on top that it has this which in turn is covered by the carpeted boot floor. The post in middle is 2" high, the arms which slot in are 11" long. There are more slots in the centre post than holes for the arm ends to locate into. Is it missing something? The pic is taken looking from above. WTF?

It's five to four.

Sundial has been mentioned too.....

It just looks like an organiser, put the spokes in wherever suits you depending on size of stuff, and it also supports the false floor?

Given it's a BMW, you then have a section for Amphet, one for Coke, Es, Speed etc. Stops mixing of Class As.

Yes it's was me . I'm sorted though thanks it arrives on Thursday all being well. We'll see how long it actually gets me to get it going. He says 2 hours I recon 2 weeks for me.

A question about steelies:

Most, usually hidden under wheel trims on cars Focus sized or above, are black and have a series of holes around them, presumably for brake cooling and/or weight reduction.

All the perforations all neat, and thus probably a fairly well balanced wheel. The logical way to make a cheap wheel, you would think.

I've noticed on a lot of Vauxhalls though that the steelies look different, with some perforations missing. Sometimes two, sometimes just one. Presumably this is a bad idea, leading to uneven cooling and making them a bastard to balance.

Once you notice these on the road they also look heffing stupid too. All I think when I see these on such as a Vectra is why oh why (haven't they cut out all the holes)?

What are GM playing at?

Is it just because all Voxhall wheels R shit?

NB: Tried posting pics in the normal way, but apparently that image isn't allowed in this community, or summat. Soz!

Posted

Also Citroen C5s have what look like black steel wheels under the trims but are actually alloy :)

Posted

I don't think the holes have much to do with cooling, as Cit/Pug vans use 'smoothies' with no holes at all. It could be for weight reduction, but steelies aren't much heavier than OEM alloys anyway, so there's no real advantage to trimming a few hundred grams. Plus, as you say, it would screw up the balancing.

Posted

I think they do it to make the steelies + TRIMZ combo look less cheapskate more than anything else, on some cars it looks almost convincing that they're ALLOYZ.

Plus, as we all know, ALL VOXULS R SHIT. Not as shit as Fix It Again Tonys, but SHITE all the same.

Posted

I've always thought that weight for weight, steelies with holes are stronger than those without. But are a few pennies more to make, which when you're making hundreds of thousands of the things, can add up.

Anyone know anything about stamps? Just wondering because someone actually sent us a letter with these attached

Since they've in half penny values I guess they're pre 1980?

As they're unfranked those stamps are still valid, although they're Scottish stamps. They are valid all over the UK for postage, but you'd have to add quite a bit to them to send even a second class letter, as that's now 53p!

Watched Supercar Build on Quest last night and they were putting together a V12 Vantage.  When building the frame they used Epoxy as it was stronger than welding.

Why havent we got this option when it comes to patching cars up? I get that it will have to be ultra clean to work, but surely as we now live in the future making things hot and sticking them together has had its day.

You obviously haven`t bought a car from my local garage then, my local autoshite proprietor.....

epoxy resin, expanding foam, newspaper, it all there under the stonechip paint......
