4x4 versions of standard cars

I put the Owd Giffer into an '03 twelve years ago, to pull a caravan they no longer have. He says it'll see him out...

Back in the days of singleton & excess cash I considered buying one of these in the lovely green with green leather. In the end I got shot of the astra of much tedium and reliability and bought an A6Avant 2.4CVT from the auctions, still much fun, got shot when I met the future Mrs FL and was spending £110 wk on fuel..

Impressive it didn't rust away before they took the photo as it's parked on a dock!

The 4x4 AX is in the 1992 observers book of cars. I’ll have a look for it later.

Sorry to disappoint you but I just happen to have that very book right next to me. No 4x4 AX I'm afraid, just a diesel and a GTI. The 4x4 BX is in there though.

I've never heard of most of those 4x4 saloons/estates. They were obviously more numerous than I thought but I wonder how many have survived.

I might be imagining it, but wasn't there a prototype 4x4 Triumph Dolomite using the front axle from the FWD 1500?

I’ve had a look this evening and you are absolutely correct. I’d mixed it up with the BX 4x4.

We use 13’ 4x4 Sprinter tippers at work in 515cdi geyser. Why do you need 4wd on a tipper?....well it has an attachment on the front so that a snow plough can be mounted

I doubt anyone has ever actually bought one, but according to their website EVM Coachbuilders can build you a luxury minicoach from a 4x4 Sprinter. Not sure what use such a vehicle would have though.

I've driven both Sprinter and modern Transit 4x4s, they're very different.

The Sprinter feels like it's miles high and has some pretences of off roading, this one even has a low box (switch on the dash for this and 4x4) and winch. It was fine for the work we did but some situations would see it struggle, the fixed 35/65 torque split isn't ideal. It felt gutless with the 2.1 diesel, it really needed the optional V6.

The Transit is just like a normal Transit with extra traction, 4x4 selected by a switch on the dash. It was fine for unmade tracks and towing in fields but you wouldn't take it off roading seriously.

Also, SSE seem to have replaced their fleet of Defenders with 4x4 Sprinters. They look rather purposeful.

Aren't the AWD systems on these stupidly fragile though? IIRC uneven tyre wear side to side can upset them. Considering the climate in their home country I'm kind of perplexed as to why AWD Volvo's aren't more standard.

That all depends on age according to squirrel2 on my for sale thread, the XC70 is genuinely all the car you could ever need or want.

I adore the look of these but the AWD system (viscous fluid??) puts me off. I've heard stories about how you have to replace all four tyres at once otherwise it does bad things and becomes two wheel drive?

Not that it matters much for snokaos....most heavy FWD Volvos are good snow weapons.

Only the very early XC Volvos used a viscous coupling. This 2005 one has a Haldex system with an electrically operated clutch to engage the drive to the rear axle when wheel slip is detected. It is quite reliable system but a bit of a fiddle to service as there are three separate oil-filled components; angle drive, bolted to the main gearbox; Haldex clutch unit, and separate rear differential. However so long as the tyres fitted are all the correct size, uneven wear is not going to cause any problems to the AWD system as the car is basically front-wheel-drive in normal use. This is based on my experience with ours after a year of (ab)use. Not often snokaos here in Pembrokeshire but loads of mud and slimy weed-covered slipways to haul boatshite up though - we love it!

On the other hand who doesn't want a 4wd K12 micra, with an electrically powered rear axle, impressive for 2004.

Link here https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/micra/15261/nissan-micra-e-4wd Although in the flesh they look standard apart from one extra badge,

The future of four-wheel drive has changed forever. Nissan has just unveiled the world's lightest, most cost-effective 4x4 system, and fitted it to its latest supermini. The new Micra e-4WD combines the pow-er of a petrol engine with the versatility of an electric motor to provide the car with maximum grip.

It works like this: if any wheelspin is detected when travelling on slippery roads, an electronic control unit activates a generator to power an electric motor which drives the rear wheels.

Our vehicle, powered by a 1.4-litre engine which pumps out 98bhp, was not short on acceleration, but the addition of the electric motor meant that it offered much more driver control through improved stability.

Just following on from LPs comments re 4x4 sprinter vs county Transit, there are some impressive videos floating about the web of the county versions of mk 2/3/4/5 transits doing fairly serious off road work - I haven't looked for newer stuff though.

My mates old man had one of these when i was at college, he swapped the engine out for a Daihatsu lump as the original was too gutless iirc. Only one I have ever seen, I'm assuming they didn't make too many.

This old girl is currently laid up just down the road from me, it was a regular sight for a couple of years, needs a wheel bearing and a few other bits iirc? Can't be many Dangel 504's about in the UK either I should think.

Like in lots of areas the UK was innovative; both Triumph and Ford put the Ferguson 4-wheel drive system in cars. Ford in the Zephyr MK4  and Triumph in the 2000 - there were also a couple of Ferguson's own prototypes with 1-off bodies. I think these prototypes were principally aimed at the police market. None were progressed. I think some cars survive. Jensen of course did build the FF using Ferguson's system - but not a great seller.

And Dangel in France 4x4 all kinds of chod. They are still going. Here is one for sale. EX EDF.

There was a 1300 4x4 Rallycross car which used the running gear of a prototype army/utility thing that never saw the light of day, but if you really want a 4wd 1300 or 1500...

Wasn't one of these kept at MIRA or the TRRL until the 1990's and kept working full of test gear or something?

I read that as well, I think it got used until the late 70’s then sat in the car park until it was restored.

Interesting post, worth doing a bit of 'research' on :-)

I remember a magazine feature from about 20 years ago (Ford Heritage?) on a surviving Ferguson Mk4 Zephyr. From memory the 4x4 Zeff was very heavy and they had changed the front suspension from struts to wishbones & coils for some reason.

Not production model but Ferguson did a couple of Stags too.

Yes, I think I remember something about Mustang front suspension being used, why that would help I don't know and I might have dream'nt the whole thing!
