A neighbour of mine has a Ford Puma with a Cosworth engine in, was 90% finished (missing trim bits) but hasn't moved a wheel in 5-10 years at least. "Fuscsia clasic m8"

I think max power was a victim of its own success. Look at modern cars today and how much of the styling follows what modders were doing in the 90s - big wheels, black or coloured wheels, twin or centre exit exhausts, tinted windows, decent rear light clusters, powerful sound systems etc etc etc

 

Cars dont get modded these days because there's no need. Well that and the PCP obvs.

Ive got the max power escort modifying manual in my library got it from my local Halfords when they were selling them off for £1

Part of my magazine collection I got out of my parent's loft recently includes a load of 'Fast Car', maybe 'Revs' and 'Fast Ford' any interest in them for postage? I'll sort them out & bung up cover shots if there is likely to be.

I loved cars and car conversions, or CCC as we called it. Some amazing stuff in there but usually sensible stuff, not much of the silliness that came to prevalence later.

I take exception to all this trispokeism, here's my Daimler XJ40 rocking £2600 worth of 18" trispokeridge circa 1996, at a time when 18" rims were seen as massively `exotic`. I still have them too, behind the garage, as I`m lothed to scrap alloys that cost me 2 months wages 22 years ago, but can't bring myself to put them on my current Jags at the same time..

The holes were so big, you could change the rear pads without removing the wheels.

I also put a 5" CRT TV on the centre console that cost about £200 from Tandy, with a PS1 under the seat. I still have them too..

And here's my Brothers 1996 Punto 1.6 Sporting, in the early-mid 2000`s, he was baptised by Max Power & spent roughly £15 large on it, on things like the body kit, the flip paint, 3 seats (2 in the front & a central bucket seat in the back between a tunnel of bass boxes), a flip down TV & playstation, clifford full closure system with remote start, ground lighting, a massive system with 2x10" & 2x15" Sony Explod subs etc. There was several hundred kilos of MDF & soundproofing mat in it. He did used to go to cruises & ended up in either Max Power or Revs in one of the cruise features.

One day he decided he was going to paint the dashboard, took him ages to get it out, & he basically wrecked it. It never saw the road again, eventually he gave it to me & I ended up breaking it about 5 years ago..

I`d also like to add, I pioneered underfloor lighting, I was painting 382 bulbs with clear Tamiya orange & hanging them all over the underside of my Vauxhall VX2300 estate Mad Max tribute, back in the early 90`s. It also had a big subbed system in it:

Hey if those 18" three spokes are usable, they'll be worth a shitload more than scrap money! I love three spokes, a few years ago I wanted some for my mk3 golf and I was astounded at the price of even 15" ones. If I had anything they'd fit on I'd probably be trying to buy them off you!

Put the three spokes on a car, just for a day, it'll be worth it for the reactions of randoms.

Citroen are deffo to blame, I think they were the ones that started doing free insurance for 18+ on slightly warm hatches.

 

Why have a five year old car when you can have a new one and probably pay less overall because your insurance is so expensive? Only thing is it's got to remain absolutely stock, they won't insure it if you even put so much as a Fido Dido sticker in the back window.

 

vauxhall scored a hole-in-one with one of the corsa insurance friendly editions by selling it WITH a cd player as standard so no butt raping for changing your ice

It was pretty much of the time though, out the back of the wide arch and three spoke era and into race replicas. It's good to see it's either had a lot of work or for a change was built properly to start with, unlike the Carlton that didn't even have sprayed door shuts!

As someone approaching 40, I lived this era..........

I'm amazed that @ page 7 nobody has mentioned Carbon Fibre effect plastic, headlight eyebrows, FSE power boost valve (advertised in all the mags). DIY £150 Anti lag kits for you NA engine. The list was endless.............

I had a Mk3 1.6 Escort with the Oakley and "Misuse of this equipment can result in serious fun" stickers in the back window, that I believe I kept all these years for nostalgia. ICE was a £35 "Shan" head unit (from Tandy) run through two JVC 2' tall MIDI HiFi speakers in the boot.

This was in 1998. It was replaced by a 85 Orion Ghia, that had a bit more effort but looked just as shit with it's Ford RS body kit and Cortina Ghia Alloys.

That got ragged over Gower!
