Remember the Gas board having a lot of these with the PTO on them. Also SYPTE had a fair few on the Little Nipper route.

Yo Bezza! That blog started 11 years ago, at the time you could get a decent Alfa 33 off eBay for £200 or a crispy Maser for £400! Bah, that makes me feel old.

Just caught up with this thread, love it. Some impressive fabrication skills there too.

I follow 'Trevs Truck Pics' on FB, he is an Englishman who has lived in Malta for many years and Dodge 50s still earning a crust regularly appear in his feed so they dont appear to be uncommon out there.

Bit of a long shot but perhaps that could be a vein to tap for a supply of parts?

Theres few things more satisfying in life (to a bald middle-aged office dweller) than receiving a 5.30pm whatsapp off Al Bundy with a few welding pictures in!!!

Don't put yourself down.

Your threads on here (and on the blue) are epic.

I try not to think about how long it's been since you coaxed me into the passenger seat of a white e21.

I didn't think those arches were that rusty.  I also didn't know how far down those arches were supposed to go.  Those arches were pretty rusty, goodness me.

Blimey that was a while back, I remember that car. What was your name on the blue back then?

I don't think they were that bad with the NA 6,247 and auto, they're a massively torquey old lump, think of it as wafting - just like a diesel Oldsmobile!

Colour me impressed...... oh to be able to produce anything close to a 'real' arch profile.

That is flippin quick too.

That's a Mk2 so most likely 4-pot Phaser 110T; our local bus operator had a batch of about 30, Phaser 110T, Chrysler Torqflite 3 speed autos and no retarder.

Even our Mk1s were all 4.236 powered.

Mine’s a mk2, but I was disappointed to find it had no turbo and no PAS! Stingy bastards.

The E-reg Mk1s we inherited from British Airways were similarly afflicted, no PAS, no cold start, no turbo. Bombproof but a bit unwieldy on the airfield.

BA were a master of misery like that, Ford Cargos 0609s with no PAS, no turbo and 4-speed manual 'boxes too.

Don't think I've seen a Mk2 with no PAS before.  It does make a hell of a difference - my Mk1 was a right twat to manoeuvre.  Apart from the time I put an LT40 van on the spec lift - then I could turn the wheel with one finger.

Were they 4.236 powered?  The 4.236 had a cold start fitted as standard (as far as I'm aware) - it was a single heater plug in the inlet manifold.  It didn't come on automatically though, you had to hold the key part way towards the "start" position to get it to activate.  I don't think there was a light to show it working either (there definitely wasn't on my Commer Walkthrough) - the only indication you got was that the dash lights went a bit dimmer.

The Phaser doesn't normally need a cold start mechanism as it's direct injection.

Yeah mine doesn't seem to have a 'heater plug' position on the ignition key or any lights for them. But on the few times I've stoked it, it's fired immediately from cold.

The 6247 has a flame start too, starts no problem no matter the conditions with a decent battery.

It would be worth checking the maximum output from the alternator though and maybe replacing with a high output modern version, they weren't massively powerful as standard if doing multiple stop starts.

All 4.236s; E92/93 ELT and E673 GLD.

There was an instruction sheet in the cab and a plunger out of the engine cover - IIRC it went something along the lines of pull the plunger all the way out, master on, ignition on, wait 30 seconds, push the plunger all the way in then crank for no more than 30 seconds; after that, rinse and repeat. All ours were retrofitted with Lucas key operated ignitions on the dash so no preheat on the key.

The "BUILT IN BRITAIN" strapline on the BA ones had "BACKED BY RENAULT" on the other side IIRC.

Shitting Nora - that is great work Al. I wish I knew someone to do this or show me the way........ no locals found so far.

How's the main body looking? Done any reconnaissance work on that yet?

Indeed, looks like some very good progress is being made to a very good standard.
