What's your car's most annoying niggle?

Recommended Posts

on mine its the "bonnet open " light flashing on and off near constantly, despite the bonnet being very definitely not open!

The cruise control not working.  The reason it's annoying is because it's the only thing that doesn't work and I'm driving a Mk IV Golf, which obviously has a fantastic reputation for electrical reliability*...

They exist - which is quite a big niggle, but I am going through a periodic "this hobby is shit and I should chop them all in for a fishing rod" phase.

Mine was my old shitter Polo 9n filling the n/s footwell with rainwater, and the horrors of a condensation laden interior following, I’ve sorted it now! The o/s scuttle panel drain was blocked, the old shit heap is bone dry now....

With you on that at the moment..my local friendly cheap mechanic is off the cards and so running shite suddenly becomes an expensive pain in the arse

My cars most annoying niggle is me, not finding time to maintain them, moving on to another, parking them up forming a queue that I'm never going to live long enough to address.

I'm the current custodian of the ex Krujoe 106, despite his and my best efforts the heater is woeful. It's a dash out job to replace the matrix, so it's coats and hats in this weather.

Neither of my daily moderns can manage to dip the passenger door mirror to help when parking, the first cars in at least 20 years that won't do it, I'd trade the folding mirrors for it, any day.

Project Drive is alive and well in Torslanda and Tuscaloosa

Central locking intermittently failing on the drivers door.

Could be actuator, could be chafed wires, but the key works so that's the preferred option at the moment. Only fails first thing in the morning, seems ok afterwards. Doesn't seem to do it when it's warm either oddly enough

Both key fobs for the Rover are bollocksed.

Lack of remote central locking doesn't bother me, but the fact that they also control the immobilizer does. This means I have to dance the 'immobilizer override' fandango every third drive or so, which requires turning the key in the driver's door variously left and right 3, 4, 2 and 7 times respectively.

GR1 when it's raining.

A4 meanwhile, is almost agonisingly well behaved, and just soaks journeys and neglect up like an arrogant, greedy sponge, despite only being six months newer.

Citroen ZX Battery going flat overnight when everything is switched off. Red Battery light on when all locked up & peering through side window. F. C.E.

the little gremlin that sits on the offside mirror and starts whistling when the car gets to 60mph ...

Mine used to do that, turns out it was the alarm triggering albeit silently. On the one i’ve got there’s a key switch on the slam panel to disable it - which we did, and now its alright.

Rusty wheel arches (rear).  I like my cars to look tidy.  The rear arches have laughed off the efforts of professionals in a couple of years and mine in 6 months.  Bloody car is determined to be a scruff.

Permanently buzzing fuel pump in the Streetwise

Auto-locking doors on the Streetwise if I don't roll a fag and get out within nanoseconds of the doors unlocking at ignition off.

R and 1st gear in the Cruiser being separated by the width of a pygmy's cock resulting in hilarious* wrong gear selection mishaps at traffic lights, replete with reversing lights to scare the shit out of the motorist behind

The only car I drive regularly is a Mercedes C220D AMG-Line on 17 plates, which I admit makes me a total wanker in the context of this forum.

The most annoying thing about it is that there isn't a single button press to skip the music to the next track.  Honestly, that is the only infotainment button that I want easily to hand.

On the merc ( which is the only one of the fleet with issues) it’s that the rear heated screen has given up the will to live. It’s corroded connections in the glass ( you can see it) but I’ve no intention of spending £1000+replacing it.

Other people blocking it in by parking across my drive,

My scenic's alarm going off when it rains, but only when the rain is blown a certain direction

I've had that with a faulty diode in the rectifier.

Quick win on this one - my chosen Pektron wizard can disable this pain in the ass feature for me when he sorts the magic box of pain out:)

Interestingly most of the annoying niggles are modern clutter, - key fobs, alarms etc are not exactly mainstream AS kinda problems as I understand it.

Mine is the clutch pedal disappearing from under my foot in  traffic. Hopefully cured with a seal kit today in the 944.

The mystery dashboard buzz at  50mph in the 414.  Especially annoying when you're travelling for hours on the M1 through the permanent roadworks.

Borat: failure of the remote key fob sensor, so it's manual unlocking only... preferably before the alarm goes off.

CX: the independent starter. It's independent 'cos it starts when it feels like it.

every now and then, especially if wet, i'll get the battery warning light flickeing on the rover 75, and if i'm really lucky i'll get the big red "charging fault" thing come up on the dash of the Rover 75, i don't actually think there is much wrong with the car other than either a bad earth or a loose wire.

it is however reallt disconcerting to see this big red warning come up on the motorway at 70-odd miles an hour.

but the car has another fault that is i think linked to this, and that is when idling with the headlamps on, the light do flicker in time with the engine speed.

now we have had this on the t4 compooter thing while running and it doesn't show any fault codes.

BUT the car has at sometine had auto wipers added, and the T4 cannot cope with these at all.

what we think is that there has been some sort of frig added to the body ECU to get the wipers working, and that has caused the flicker on the ligts, and i thing the battery thing too.

but the car is nearly 17 years old, and has covered 155k miles, so, as long as it keeps going i'm happy!

Vectra - stinking of fuel on hot start and clutch bite is all over the show

Landy - gear lever gaiter keeps popping off and letting the whiney 5 th gear noise into the cabin .

Ducato - clutch bite point variable .

Saxo - clutch also about fucked - original at 193k tho

Ke 175 - old bike gear change shaft slipping issues.

Posted

Saab - the same gearbox fault I got it with. I think it's due a bit more fluid as it's acting like a slippy clutch when cold. This week I'll check after it's got warm in traffic.

The touring: the tiny, buzzy rattle from behind the dash at 3500rpm- I've looked and I can't find it, I've pressed, hit, lubed, sprayed, pulled, pushed and swore at and nothing has resolved it BUT... if you insert your finger between the door panel and the dash and push it into the little gap... ITS ALL QUIET!

The 635- the brakes binding up when it gets hot... Currently being addressed at long last where if this doesn't work, it's getting sold on. Promise.

The landrover- it's a landrover.
