What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I met Hairnet this evening.

Also, me and Dugongtanabe got to take Trigger's gorgeous Civic for a spin.  I also caught up (briefly) with RoadworkUK.  Enjoyed a cracking pint by the sea.  70 assorted motors turned up to the meet, ranging from a spotless Mk2 XR2 to an Iveco-engined hot rod, and an Evo VII to a Ford Fairlane.  'Twas a good evening.  Also, the Cavalier appears to have managed 100 miles on 15 quid, which isn't bad going for a 2-litre petrol, especially considering I wasn't hanging about on the way down.

I meant to ask you, what did you both think of the Civic to drive?, Fun little thing isn't it, if a bit tinny and bouncy!

Loved it.  We both did.  A proper sweetie.  Ever so delicate and precise.  Surprisingly nippy too, once past the flat spot.  I love the noise the indicators make too - sounds just like a ping pong ball!

Look on the bright side, at least you're still here :)

Hairnet is a top banana - he helped the SVM to a triumphant victory at the Shitefest 2014 Great Pub Quiz Gatecrashing Evening by a clear 19 points and is therefore SVM APPROVED.

I was reading this thread from the bottom up. Some confusion arose here:

Then reading Wuvvums comment above made me wonder why he met Hairnet:

I was thinking that was a little too much information but thankfullyyou were talking about the Civic.

It's alright anyway, Dugong came down from Peterborough to the meet and took it for a drive with Wuvvum, Hairnet was entertaining himself over a pack of Honda Cubs.

Thanks Trigger.  I now need to unsee the image that is in my head.

He's 25 and looks pretty cool driving it am 40 and look like a dick . He's taking it to Blackpool this weekend see if he likes it so much after that!

He got about 40 miles away before it chucked it.

There was nigh on 1/2 tank of juice I think in the Sirion when I got it off DW. I can't see the (hopelessly small/dark) milometer, but it looks like I've done 58 miles and now the tank is empty.

Thanks to God for todays rain, which made the (extended) drive home even more pleasurable then ever just now. I got the wheels to light up in style and whanging through the gears is something else. It makes an almost sort of 'racing car/close ratio' whine if you're really wellying it round and changing up/down, and it took a sterling effort to get it to let go at decent speeds on tight corners. It hasn't got a stereo and it doesn't need one.

I've been trying to sum this car up really and I think the best I can say is that it's like a Mini*, but quicker, better built and more reliable.

*Not the BMW version.

That about sums it up Billy. The Maestro is a bit of a come-down in the excitement/bonkers stakes, but is much more of a ying to the 2CV's yang. Two yangs were getting a bit much!

I haven't been able to stop grinning all day as somehow I've landed myself a date. Not only is the lady in question gorgeous and single, but she drives a 1956 Austin A30 as her only car. I honestly couldn't believe it when she said yes, and she even sounded quite keen on the idea! I'm very, very pleased about this as I thought she was out of my league, but I just thought "fuck it, nothing to lose" and it paid off! I've never had much luck with girls in the past, most think I'm weird I suppose.

Just hope I don't balls it up.

Sounds like a match made in heaven, or a figment of an overactive imagination.  Either way, best of luck with that one!

I'm rather pleased that the red Princess hasn't sunk overnight.  This is not a euphemism.

Is your 'date' the BMC BL show? If it is, that's beyond perfection. I shall buy a new hat.

It's in the nicest bit of Peterborough too, there's actually some decent pubs nearby.

When you are old (I put myself in the 'old' category) and drive one its difficult to avoid just looking either like a JSA claimant

Very true, I often attract looks of pity when my colleagues see me park my shitty Megane in the work car park, amongst a sea of silver Audi/BMWs.

It's very interesting, from a sociological perspective. I happen to know that the boys with the 62-plates aren't any more affluent or succesful than I am, they merely pretend to be. Not sure what they gain from this, apart from stress and massive debt ! Most bizarre...

Someone smarter than I said something about buying things you don't need with money you haven't got to impress people you don't like.....

Just had a look on we buy any car so I could have a laugh at their valuation of the XM and they couldnt find it off the plate. Went into the menus and ZX, XM and Xantia aren't there!

Seems they go up to 25 years old, but not 17 or 20!

(I wasnt going to really WBAC the xm, don't worry!)
