I saw that and thought I'd report in but couldn't remember what the advert was for, just the car :)

Spent yesterday afternoon at the surprisingly entertaining and informative Bursledon Brickworks Museum for their Halloween Steam-up fair with Mutha_Stanky and Micro_Stanky.

Well worth a visit, and potentially worthy of a Solent Shiters meetup. Have some pictures of some of the steam engines present and assorted chod

Steam powered lorry. Enough torque to tow the QE2 but top speed is a leisurely 20mph or so.

The insides has loads of really interesting stuff about bricks and tiles and stuff too. Well worth £4 a head to get in.

They also has stationary engines, miniature steam engines powering meccano fairgrounds, trains, crafts, music, loads of stuff. Well worth a visit.

Was a lovely day too.

How utterly appalling a Rover 827 is as a tow vehicle.
CANNOT RECOMMEND.

One of the boating forums (ybw.com) has a great thread about comparative road tests from the 1990's pitching Rover against BMW. This forum is frequented by a bunch of guys who could have an argument in an empty room, so it makes for an interesting read.

But the best bit is the Flickr feed which is providing the tests... belonging to our very own Trigger!

I saw a 1949 Jowett Javelin which (according to the DVLA) has a 5.3 engine! I’m guessing that would be a Jaguar V12, right?

Could be a 327 Chevy.

The manager at work had a rover 800 as a company car, probably 6 months old at the time , I had to drive it to Manchester airport to pick somebody up , at the time I had a Toyota Celica, this rover was a terrible drive , just everything about it was bad , the other manager had a rover 600 which was great but 800 guy wouldn't have the 600 because he was the senior manager , and yes he was as big a knob as he sounds

By contrast, an 825 diesel is the best 2-wheel-drive tow car I've ever owned.

VM FTW. My Rangie with the VW lump was pretty good as a tow car. Well, apart from the fact that the self-levelling rear suspension obviously didn't. Bit saggy.

It might just be that pic, but the wheels look way too small, like wheels on cars in VIZ

Sadly not.

Flipping heck, it's on almost 200k miles and it's been in continuous use for at least the last 10 years!

Some recurring advisories though...

  • Nearside Front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
  • Offside Front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
  • offside rear tyre is very old and cracking on tread.
  • Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)
  • Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin (3.5.1g)
  • suspension arms etc are rusty.

Just got this in the post for £5.80 delivered :) Looks interesting but no estates in it sadly as it was printed in 1989 before they had introduced an estate.

Further to my acquisition of the parent's old Bang & Olufsen amp and turntable, I have repatriated a set of Linn speakers off eBay. They were in Berkenham, South London and I did a collection trip in a day on Sunday there. A nice catchup was also had with chaseracer of this parish on the way back north to have a tea time snack at the McDonald's in Cannock.

I think I saw one of those new MG things on the M5 Monday morning. It looked like any modern SUV type thing the only bit I noticed were the badges taped over with black insulation tape. I asumed it was just someone embarassed to admit owning a new MG rather than being a new model. Oh and it had a headlight out so quality control just like the BL days

The Rover 800, in my opinion, is not a bad car to drive if it's used for what it was built for. I've owned most of the models except for the 820 Vitesse Turbo. The 827 is a little more coarse than the later 825 KV6 which was a step up drivewise in my opinion, but again, no race car. The 820 is a bit shit, looks nice but drivewise feels like a Montego that's ready for the scrapyard. Even worse, they shoved the 2.0 non-turbo engine into the Coupe, what the hell were they thinking? Rove ri suppose, like the Government, lots of shit ideas that don't really work.

I'll be honest, I'd much rather an 825 Sterling over a Celica, I like my comfort.

Am I the only one who thinks the wheels on that MG thing are far too big? It's the stupid tyres that make it look like a toy car.

Yes, you are. The rear styling is seriously out of proportion with the wheel size. Shrink-wrapped rubber certainly doesn't help, but it's not often I think a car needs bigger wheels. This is one of those times.
