Got home with no key and locked out.

Why the grin?

I left the Clio Baccara unlocked so I've got a nice executive feeling waiting room. These seats are just so good.

This lad needs to join the fold, he is obviously a winner in life, there is hope for the next generation

I sent William a message on Twitter encouraging him to do just that. Hopefully he'll rock up at some point.

Apparently he was on here in the past but didn't post anything.

From the 'Close Encounters' thread, I got reminiscing about my first ever car, bought before I passed my test, and sold for spares before I passed as well!

My truck! Wish I'd bought a welder along with all the other shit I bought for it, could have gone down a completely different path. It did teach me to get on the tools though, my halfords toolbox, jack, axle stands etc were all bought for this, and I still have them all too!

Was utterly fucked in every way! Dodgy MOT, Dodgy Tax, a mate drove it back from Stoke on Trent with me, said he was never fucking doing me a favour ever again!

That's right! With aluminum rot...

Excellent...

As utterly shite as they are as cars, I miss my S2 LtWt with RR V8 dropped in. It was an awful lot of fun to have car performance & pram handling.

I wish I'd got to drive it, but it's probably best I never did! Do have many pictures of it, but my mind is a bit fuzzy now to do a retrospective thread

And the picture of your first car also has a vacuum cleaner in it.

Over three hours driving too and from work today, including drop off and pick up of the tiddler.

Felt a bit like this

Last time I did that we ended up with the whistle in the ditch as the guy who pulled the robin out referred to it!

Mostly a grin and a little bit of a grump as well. There are some wonderful helpful people on here. After asking if anyone could look at a motor for me over in California, within minutes Meowdchina had agreed to go out of his way to look at a Ford Ranchero for me. I am so glad he did as I was pretty certain I was going to have it until his photo's arrived last night. The seller had mentioned the floors being a bit rotten but neglected to mention the windscreen surround was also rotten with some nasty filler in one of the pillars. That would of been a nasty surprise in 6 weeks time if I had bought it. So thanks again Kev I owe you some beers (or cider as it's Somerset) when you are next over.

What makes me grin?  This place!

Imagine, if you will, someone telling you about a place he's found on the internet.

"It's full of random strangers taking the piss out of each other's cars, and nobody minds very much.  They raffle the cars between them - and bear in mind here the cars are worth an average of about £500, if that - and they have these random meetups all over the country.  There's a bunch of them going to fucking Bulgaria for a weekend in the summer, with the sole intention of buying some unseen old bangers and driving them back to Blighty.  And it's not like these blokes are old mates, most of them have never met!  Oh and they go to car auctions as well, and just buy some limping old tat that nobody else wants, and get this: they sell raffle tickets for that car before they go!  The winner doesn't even know what he's getting!  Mad as a bucket of frogs, the lot of 'em."

I know some of us have meltdowns and shit, me included, but really.... it's the place to be.

I was telling my office about the Cannock roffle today, no one seems to understand why it's so entertaining.

we seem to have a few new members recently which is nice. I see at least one or two don't get* this place :)

One of whom is me. Thanks for kind thoughts; it's a great Forum.  My grin is finally getting the A40 Somerset going this afternoon after 4 months off the road with a blown head gasket.

Ordered a thick solid copper head gasket from the Owners' Club instead of the usual composite non-asbestos which never last long, but first attempt resulted in much water leakage with little compression and pooled water sitting on top of gasket when dismantled again.

For the second go I had the copper gasket annealed and coated it in Wellseal and upped the head bolt torque, but I haven't been able to finish the job until today because I broke the steel pump to carb fuel pipe taking it off and have only just received a second hand replacement from the club.

Took a while to start after months in a cold damp garage but finally went after a spray of WD40 on the plug leads. Seems to be running fine when warmed up but haven't taken it out yet due to wet salty roads.

You should always anneal a copper gasket before use, they harden up when stored. It's as simple as heating them till they glow dull red, I normally use a gas cooker.

Middle of winter....but the baked bean crop is coming along well. (Sweden is in fact the EUs largest grower of baked beans. I heard it on Fox News)

The club's only just had the copper gaskets specially made and claimed they were ready to fit so I doubt whether they've been stored.  Notwithstanding, it obviously did need annealing.  I tried with a blowtorch but gasket is very thick and I couldn't get enough heat in.  How would you do it on a gas cooker  - ring, grill or oven?

Ovens top out at 260-odd C. My grill claims to go to 300 but still takes ten minutes to toast crumpets.

Get the ring on and find the hot bit of flame.

Thought about this, but rings not as big as gasket so would need to heat a bit of the gasket at a time. Is it better if it's it all heated at once?

As long as it all gets to cherry red, it doesn't have to be all at the same time. If you keep working it around it'll get close though.

Place my brother did his work experience had a 2A LWB with a Harvey Frost and a V8, borrowed* it a few times , including once when someone had snapped a half shaft, so it was just left in hi-ratio 4wd with the rear prop removed. Now that was a laugh, lots of smoke pulling away with a car on the back and even going along at a steady pace the front wheels kept bouncing and squealing when they landed.
