Today I went nottingham, as I always do i go my fave milkshake shop. They have colin mcrae rally on which is mega.

 

So i had a quick blast. Then decided I needed a ps1.

 

Just one this lot on Ebay.

I changed the van's oil today, it was long overdue. Pleasingly the same amount of oil came out as I put in last time, so minimal contamination of veg oil in the sump after 8k of running on high percentages of veg.

Viscol 10W40 is the lube of choice at £9.99 for 4.5l, enough to fill the van's sump, at Home Bargains.

I like the upright oil filter cartridge setup, it's a lot less messy than a spin on filter and the filters are buttons to buy.

^^^^ you have obviously never done an oil filter on a 1.9 diesel Vauxhall / fiat / Saab .

What a messy twat of a job and the banjo bolt sump plug is a lovely surprise on the first one you do . Sump plug half way out and oil fires out in two directions

I haven't and don't ever plan to! What's different about the design of the GM/Fiat diesel's oil filter housing compared to the VAG one? It's easy to contain the mess with the latter.

My neighbour's who have been keeping my mobile specialist ( to whom I introduced them) in champagne and caviar for the last year have just arrived in their new ML350 bluetec beast. Apparently they're keeping the old clk as the second car now!

 

In other news I was preparing the 2cvfor the national rally next weekend and snapped off the aerial. Major annoyance until I remembered I had a spare! Free fix!

I've also bought a new small toolbox from Aldi for all the bits and pieces to swap between cars as well as their tent and mattress. Seems ok, but for a four man tent you'd have to be very friendly!

 

Also filled up two cars- the merc did 30mpg, and the 2cv 54mpg(although this was after following a ripple bonnet Slough built 2cv so I didn't so much accelerate as let the world move while you gain speed).

The fiat 1.9 one is under the engine above the OS subframe . There is a pipe stub to put a hose on to help drain the filter but it still pisses all ways and fills the subframe if you don't put a bit of plastic there . Oh and it's at about 20deg off horizontal rather than vertical

Introduced my Sierra to the AS Base.

 

Seemed to go well. I intend to keep them apart when the red one is in season...God only knows what would happen otherwise.

A day of mixed results with mine. Dad came over this morning so we started to sort Astra's running issue out but it's still no better, one minute it's revving it's bollocks off, next it's normal again, then it will over run when you turn it off so you need to stall it meaning it's probably over fueling but can't see how to adjust a Pierburg 2E3 and it misses and splutters on anything more than half throttle.

 

I think I'm going to have to admit defeat on this one and book it into a garage, that will hurt! Then we fixed the Dolomites running problem where it was missing and struggling to start, turns out that the points had closed up and the timing was a million miles out, setting all this up correctly result in a much faster and smoother car. It's transformed it now!

 

My daughter was impressed too.

The answer is to bin the peirburg they were shit when new and not worth messing with. Taking it to a garage will probably end in a big bill and still the carb will be shit. Try and find a webber conversion

been busy little bee today, have changed the clutch housing breather container thing and changed the exhaust on the mini all with minimal knuckle scraping.

 

have got the cat back on too so i'm hoping that will result in the passing of its MOT at a second attempt. fuggin' mpi's are such a pain in the arse. had it been on a carb then we'd have sorted it in no time.

 

then had a swift half at the ship on the way home, and steak and chips for tea.

 

still think that we have to move the mini on, which is kinda sad given the years of mini ownership that both me and kerry have had, and that this one will be the last one we'll own probably.

A few people have said that! My mate Dave is a local mechanic and a mechanic lecturer at the Otley college who knows these cars inside out so I'm dropping it off with him on Tuesday. He says the timings retarded (bit like me) and something about the 95 plug on the bulkhead, he said not to worry about the bill either so fingers crossed he can sort it.

You know me, Trig... thick as mince with cars. But the difference between the two Sierra's is night and day with a Weber.

 

That said,if your man can make it go then that's perfect.

Is it just up from Burger King on Upper Parliment Street? Sounds similar to where I used to go and drink milkshakes and play with the Gamecube.

You can also try the Toast Bar in the National Videogame Arcade, free to get in if you don't want to go in the museum and there's usually a Mega Drive, PS1, PS2, Wii set up with games you can swap at the counter.

Trig, I had points and condenser hell on a 1300FWD a few years ago. I fitted an Accuspark lecky distributer thing and it was a revelation and no more points to worry about. Wasn't too expensive either

I fitted new points when i bought the car but for some reason they have just closed up, i fitted a accuspark kit to the Cortina so if they close again I'll be doing the same to this!

The one thing I don't miss on cars is points (and condensers... so two things, and carbs... so three things....) as they were a pain in the arse and always needed doing.

 

Once upon a time I bought an old Z1000 'cos I was going to build a 'Moto Martin' (and did and it was very nice) and it went well but I used it to commute to Hull (from Scunthorpe) every day. One day, in the rain it was coughing and spluttering and generally being an arse which I really liked as misfiring bikes and greasy, wet roads are not a great mix...

 

So I had a butchers at the thing at lunchtime and could see nothing wrong with it. Finally twigged that water must have got into the ignition casing (right hand side front, polished and had 'Kawasaki' writ large!) and when I took it off, it had points! After I got over my shock and horror, I adjusted them and nearly binned the bloody thing on the way home 'cos it was soooooo quick compared to how it had been.

Anyway, because someone had posted up Alfa seats in the ebay thread, I started looking for a set to fit into one of the pandas.  Stupid prices, 70 quid plus 40 for delivery each!  Anyway, i found a nice set of velour ones for 40 BIN to collect near Lincoln.  So I boughted them and asked what the opening hours where.  Up to 7pm today and 8pm during the week.  Turns out it's a business run by some Polish guys, who where bemused by the Maestro, and had a yard full of 10-15 year old cars I presume they were breaking.  Open until 7pm on a Saturday - they deserve every penny they make and put our pathetic not open when you need them outfits to shame.

Long story kept brief,my dad sold a ford consul mk2 in 1980 to a friend of my grandad who wanted the back axle out of it.Here it is 6 months ago,still sat in the garden with the axle removed.thought some might like to see it

Even longer story,a load of invacars used as sheds again sat since 1980 have all been saved following the owners death,and a friend saved the number plate and logbook in my dads name for me :-)

Had an enjoyable day at the RAF Marham track day today.  I took the 200 VI, unfortunately I only managed to get 15 or so laps out of it all day as it kept "doing a K series" and I had to come back in to let it cool down and top up the coolant.  Also the brakes weren't really up to track use.  It was great fun when it was working though, and quick enough not to be embarrassing.

 

Here it is (complete with gaffer taped headlights) next to Spottedlaurel's Lexus.

I wasn't the only one with problems though - the chap next to us in the white Cayman lost his brake servo halfway through the day and had to cut his weekend short and drive gingerly home.  The Lexus also seemed to briefly develop a slightly sticky front brake, but it soon cleared itself up.  Went surprisingly well round the track too for such a big wafty barge.

 

There were a couple of interesting cars there.  This Clan Crusader had a BMW engine shoehorned into the back.

This Allard was lovely, although it didn't seem to go out much and didn't go very fast when it did.  Sounded rather nice though.

As my car was misbehaving I spent much of the day as a passenger - did quite a lot of laps in the left seat of the Lexus, but I also got a ride in a rather wonderful 5.7-litre Holden Commodore and a Nova GTE.

 

The Rover actually behaved itself (more or less) fine on the 60-mile drive home - admittedly at a rather more gentle pace than it'd been doing on the track, where I saw 120 a couple of times.  As an added bonus, I found a plant growing inside the offside front inner wing.

I also recommend Gran Turismo 2, if you didn't get that too. I remember that being one of my favourite games years ago along with Toca Touring Cars 2000. Not to mention that it has some great shite (how many other games are there where you can race a standard Citroen Xantia, Daihatsu Move or Vauxhall Corsa?)

Out of that whole stack of PS1 games I would advise leaving R/C Stunt Copter 'til last as you're likely to smash the machine up in frustration at the difficulty. Playing the board game Operation using feet wrapped in ferrets would be easier.

No actual proper collection thread on this as I am a bit shit but the Mister Two is home.

 

My mate who I bought it with (205GTi on here but he's lost his log in details) picked me up in his Nissan Kumquat and we headed up to Harrogate to meet M'coli who had Joe's a-frame.

 

Despite the 1.5l dizzler engine moving a car the size of a van, we then made good progress to Castle Cleland and met up with Joe only stopping to get some grub from the co-op where 205GTi passed on Craig Davids phone number (Craaaiiig Daviiiid) to us for no reason other than the fact he could.

 

Joe had kindly popped the car on stands to free off the brakes and we had remembered to bring Volksy to repeatedly hit them with a lump hammer. After a good battering the brakes were declared 'free enough' and we moved the car.

As people who have visited Castle Cleland will know its up a steep hill with lots of sharp bends and 205GTi was having sphincter spasms about a-framing the car down the hill, so we got Joe to show us how to fit the frame in case we needed it but just took it off and whacked it in the boot again and was told I would have to risk my life to drive it home as its obviously a lot less valuable than a generic Nissan family wagon.

 

After a tour of the treasures hidden around the farm, a quick drink, a browse of an early 90s autocar magazine and some home made baking we were ready for the off.

 

I headed off first so that I could be warned if it suddenly started smoking from the rear wheel with the sticking caliper. There was a bit of a smell but we pulled over to check it over when we got to Skipton and whilst it was a bit warm, it wasn't on fire which was a result.

 

Unfortunately as we set off, I put it into 3rd gear instead of 1st and stalled it. So I tried restarting it but it was dead. No lights, nothing. We popped the hood and fiddled with the earth lead on the battery and the dash lit up and we were on our way again.

 

It was then a simple drive back to Shipley to put it outside 205GTi's house. Mrs 205GTi was in the garden having a glass of vino collapso and came out to have a look and seemed reasonably impressed, probably as last time we did this we turned up in the DAF. She was confused though as she seemed to think the car was staying at my house and there were questikns such as "How long will it be here for" and "Where's our car going to go" but by using tactics that would make a politician proud 205GTi managed to skirt round the issue by answering different question's and distracting her by removing the t-bar.

 

Unfortunately he was not able to impress her with the pop up headlights as one of them had decided not to pop down earlier in the day making the car look like it was winking at you but I am sure that will be easily sorted. Apparently you can manually wind them down but will look how tomorrow.

Will have a proper look at it this week but its the first time its been driven in years and it was bob on which is promising.

 

Ta to Joe, was good to see you and thanks for your help sorting shizzle out and supplying the A-frame even if it wasn't needed in the end and ta to M'coli for dropping it off for us.
