I commend your  throw back attitude to 'knight of the road' times of old, Vulgalour, but thread carefully; especially with HGF of a random strangers astra; very involved job, n you don't know who these folk are n what they are like...

I was once like you; offering to lend a hand; co'incidentally involves an astra - 01 1.4, where the bottom pulley  came off, along with its retaining bolt; electric steering inoperable n the car died - was a friend of my cousin, on the motorway; - went 50miles outta my way to rescue her - its a minimum of €120 to be recovered on a motorway here- A framed the astra back to hers, after dropping her to a bus stop to get to work...

I ended up 'fixing' the astra, - the key way /woodruff bit was shredded off the crank nose, but I bodged it back with a scrappy pulley n bolt along with some nails to hold it on - explained the now junk status of their crank/engine; despite goin very much outta my way to recover their car, save them the recovery fee; all they were prepared to pay for was the scrapyard bits plus some locktite - €37.50 most of it in loose change; - kept the receipts from the breakers - id even bought some 'outey' tork bits to do the job too... they refused to pay anymore, n I was outta pocket; her boyfriend offered 'some grass for a joint' on top, but even a joint couldn't supress my rage at that stage...never again!!

Well... the noble deed was done because that's how I am but it has the chance of earning Mike's garage a bit of cash.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  They seemed decent sorts in a bit of a bind, we were up front about everything and if they don't like any of it then they're welcome to jog on.  Gut feeling says it'll be okay whatever the outcome.

It comes from Sheffield all it's life, supplied by Gilders of Sheffield.

Our A4 came from that same Gilders!

That Audi looks lovely . It's s 90 isn't it? (pics too wee to see on phone ) Audi have never been great at making their model range look different.

Hope it's not a rotten disappointment Trigger. 150k covered in the grim north, in potentially 25 grim northern winters.

Same here, I've been worrying all night about it! It was up for £300 last month with a running issue but I've spoke to the seller who said it was a split pipe that's been fixed... I'm currently on my way up in a MG ZT 190 which is the perfect car for a 300 mile round trip!

We should maybe put together some obscure videos of working on cars as well as test driving.

Did anybody watch that programme 'An MG is born' with Mark Evans (?) - it was great watching the mechanical aspect of that in detail as opposed to the brief overview on Wheeler Dealers/Car SOS etc. I really enjoyed that MG series.

Quite how many people would want to hear my northern accent swearing like a trooper at a stripped down M30 engine after a heavy night on the booze I don't know...

I spent Friday preparing my Land Rover Series 2a 109 for new paint, got down to the unit yesterday (late, because hung over) to apply the paint. Then it started raining. And then the leaking unit roof started dripping rain water all over the Land Rover, which would have had fresh paint on it if I'd got up on time.

Bullet dodged! It's official... beer saves time & money :-)

Looks like my drive after an oil change....Forgotten new sump plug washer and a few too many drips of oil

Posted

It's a banjo bolt arrangement at the caliper end and the washer on the new hose was slightly bigger than the old one, so it landed on a rusty surface. There's a stupid plastic shield (which was removed in the picture so I could break out the blowtorch) so I didn't realise what had happened until I saw the rapidly expanding pool of brake fluid.

My T4 i bought new in 2000 , rolled over its first 150000 miles  :-D   Last oil change and cambelt :-P was at 60000
