How's your back ? I didn't find the seats great when I picked it up from saltash

Posted

I manned up and brimmed the tank on the old Merc 300se I bought last year. I was very aware of the possible results of putting 90 or so kg of unleaded in a 27 year old fuel tank, straps etc. It seems to have sat down a lot!

I'm happy that I am able to do this though, the car sat unused from 2008 until November last year and it seems to be getting back to being a nice to use auld bus again.

Back's fine, although I don't think I'd want to be doing lots of hours in it - then again, I've never found a small car that had comfortable seats.  Certainly not the worst one I've been in though.

Collected Mrs Pirate's repaired Saab today.  The dealer has put a new turbo on it and cleaned out the sump - apparently it was starting to sludge up.  Or more likely, it was completely clogged and the turbo was the first part to fail (the spindle had snapped). Anyway, I'm hoping it'll behave now.

She's been driving it around all afternoon, top down despite it being bloody freezing, and complains that "bitches" won't let her out of junctions anymore.

Had a run down to Melton Mowbray on Friday to pick up a load of dog food.
The store was on a farm which had a drive thru scrappy

220D has the fully mechanical injection pump too, who needs electronic diesel control?

Modern cars make incredible MPG claims because road tax and BIK is linked with co2 emissions, and co2 output is linked to how much fuel the car uses but in the real world they are little better than a good diesel engine from 20 years ago.

This is 100% accurate, its barmy innit.

Yes. My Rover 75 felt a leap ahead of the XM in (engine) technology terms, yet it had 5 more bhp and delivered exactly the same economy. It was also vastly more complicated, full of DMF nastiness, had the thermostat in the most ridiculous place and had two electric fuel pumps. PROGRESS.

I've never understood the argument for using common rail diesel tech because older engines sound agricultural (e.g using the M47 instead of L-Series in a Rover 75). They do, but CR diesels in cars sound shite too, just in a tinny way.

After shitefest it was pretty apparent to anyone who drove the GTE that the brakes were shite, After some of the runs the front brakes could be seen visibly smoking and after a few trips there was quite noticable brake fade, (Pad knockback was also an issue but i'll cover that in a future post.) When I got back from Wales my pads were not in the best of healh:

So as a result I've recently been working on upgading my standard Girling calipers to use vented discs. This conversion has been done a feww times but its not a common way of venting scimiar discs as most people just fit willwoods. You can get an off the shelf kit fit the girling brakes from the Netherlands but is its a little pricey.

I've got a set of 4 pistion willwood superlite calipers but have decided not to use them for a few different reasons; firstly increasing braking power at the front will mean the rear brakes probably will need altering and I'm not sure its really needed on a road car, Brake pads for the Girling setup can be bought for as little as £10 a set, Willwood brake pads are about £80 for cheap ones, also clearance for the willwoods means most of the standard wheels wont fit. Theres also an element of pedantry to this upgrade, Its a desire to modify / improve the origonal equiptment rather than just binning it and starting again.

The standard discs have the following specs:

Diameter: 273mm
Height: 38mm
Bore: 78mm
Thickness :12mm

I've decided to go for vented discs from The Front of a FORD Sierra 2.0 Turbo Cosworth 4x4 1990-1993

These discs have the following specs:

Diameter: 278mm
Height: 37mm
Bore: 74mm
Thickness: 24mm

They will need bolt holes drilling to suit the hub, the centre bore opening out, The inital spec was for a 2mm spacer will be needed between hub and disk to ensure the disc is in the middle of the caliper and the calipers spacer is intended to be 12mm. Dave's going to be doing the machining, He's recently bought a lathe and a milling machine and is keen to do the work. (see the red rebel thread)

Here are a few photos of the mocking up process:

Stay tuned and next post will be about the machining...

(ps sorry I'm filling up the news thread with this but I've not got a project thread about the GTE on this forum and cant be arsed to start one!)

The argument is compelling from an emissions point of view and also it does allow much bigger bhp/litre numbers, but it doesn't do much for the basic efficiency of the diesel cycle so in practical use the MPG numbers end up much the same.

After a bit of messing about and some fresh measurements on a decent surface the final dimensions were: 11mm For the caliper spacer and 3mm for the hub spacer.

The steel we used for the spacers was ground flat plate, 3mm was available off the shelf but 11mm is a funny size and needed to be custom made. Coventry grinders supplied this for not too much money  :)  Though there was a bit of a wait!

Dave started by turning up the hub spacers, theser were cut out in rough with a grinder before the final machining was done on the lathe:

319.jpg

Next the discs were spun up to machine the centre bores out, to do this the diameter was checked on a standard disc and double checked against a hub;

Finally disc and spacer had the 4 holes bolt holes drilled:

Next up Dave started on the caliper spacers, these were rough cut out as blanks then drilled to match the bolt holes of the caliper, then a dowel was made and inserted  into the bolt holes they were then machined to shape.

Next stage is going to be getting the calipers refurbished, I'll get the spacers plated/coated to match the calipers. I'm going for stainless pistons this time rather than chrome. There are some new high tensile caliper bolts which will need turning down to suit and some extra long brake pad pins to make in stainlesss too. So theres a bit more more work to keep Dave busy!

Cheers Joe

What's the issue with this? You couldn't find out could you? Not that I'm in need of another car and yes I already have a 124, but that is just so nice, I love the early 124s with trims.

I love it when I see all of that kind of machine work and have to admit that I wouldn't have a fucking clue.

Oldsmobile needs a proper resto thread, not these frustrating snippets :)  C'mon man, just do it. Piccies too!

The 124 looked in decent shape, but the 190 16v behind is totally rotten, rust holes everwhere and a nasty interior from the windows being left open.....

Indeed so. A proper thread will be started with piccies as soon as I get something meaningful done to the car. So far just tinkering between rain/gales/snow.

Looks like ratty has been visiting the horse food again.

Turns out the colours are repeated on both sides, rejoining may be a challenge.

Put a massive baking tray of rice in passenger footwell of civic and it has cleared all the mistyness.

So it all looks fixed which is awesome for 90 mins work. Just need to replace the radio now.

Cheers Phill, it was a pleasure as always and the lunch was much appreciated, the Starlet has delivered me back (well, nearly, I've stopped off at the office because I love work so much...) and not a single issue, drives very nicely considering the mileage and goes well enough too. Hopefully Moog will enjoy it. Not used to little engines any more, I 'topped up' the tank from just under a quarter near Truro and nearly filled it!

Thanks for the help chaps. Got train tickets booked for thursday to collect the beast!

Swiss army ratty ?

Perhaps, also rat poisened ratty :) The pealed back shroud is my doing.

I don't think a persons done it, as it's occured at the hole in the bulk head between engine and passenger  which is a pretty hard place to get to.

Last saturday I went back to Cambridgeshire to start the extraction of the engine and gearbox from the scrap Marea weekend that provided replacement tailgate and bumper after the accident before Christmas...

I got to the point where I got the cylinder head off and called it a day. I left with diesel and aircon pumps, inlet manifold, starter motor and everything that I took off as I was dismantling that lot...

I left it looking like this...

Yesterday I went back, this time with engine crane and trailer...

By mid afternoon it was out and loaded into the trailer...

As you can imagine it's a heavy lump, we had to lift it into the trailer with the crane. Today I started stripping it in-situ in the trailer. Removed the alternator and the Power steering pump and the bits off the top. Next week I'll set about splitting the gearbox and block and make it more movable and easier to store...

I've set to with cleaning everything before I store it all in the lock-up...

Got a proper Scandiwegian spot light bracket from a friend in Norway for no monies! Fitted a pair of Hella something or others (I forget the model name) to it and I'm chuffed with how it looks. I'm not so chuffed with the Ring Automotive "pre-wired" wiring kit that I bought though. Frankly it's not fit for purpose; the eyelets on the ground cables have a 3mm hole so quite where I'm meant to attach it I'm not sure and the wire isn't even long enough to get from the lights to under the bonnet. I've made my own ground wires and got everything other than the switch wired up but I don't think I've got a clean connection on the main beam wire that activates the relay. Got dark and too cold before I could sort it.

In other Swift news the silver ones MOT is tomorrow, will be taking it there first thing in the morning so fingers crossed it's not too bad. Or not, if it fails miserably I've got a 16k mile interior and new windscreen for the blue one...

Seeing as I am a kind and loving husband and my wife travels down some absolute shite, ungritted back country roads to work ,I thought I would treat her to a set of very slightly used winter tyres and rims for her fiesta. Said rims where located in Oldham Manchester so I combined it with a trip to the Trafford Centre with the fambo but, due to the seller being a complete mongtard who supplied the wrong postcode by one digit, I am likely now known as the weirdo in the blue fiesta asking random passers by around Saddleworth moor the location of an unknown road and swearing I was in the right postcode and they were wrong . Wheels eventually located and seller liberally berated by email  !

Really, it's not that hard to write your own fucking postcode is it !
