Fish supper & a bottle of Irn Bru in Eyemouth. My friends' daughter was the herring queen one year. My friend from college, still lives there. 22 years later...

Some things never change. Garage I used to use. Still littered with Novas, XR4is and Chevettes.

(Goes without saying I am now shopping for a CX. Damnit. I love these cars. Nothing else comes close. 5am up, drove to Edinburgh then Kelso, I think 12 hours in the car, one way or another, felt totally comfortable).

Brought the Clove Brown Metro up to London earlier, fully loaded with presents, food and dog. Needed to make use of the split rear seat, amazing what you can get in a Metro.

All was going well up the A10 and M11 until just before the drop to 50mph coming into London when the alternator light came on. Then the temperature gauge shot up, we stopped in an authorised vehicles only ramp behind an armco barrier and fortunately I hadn't removed the toolbox and spare belt. 20 minutes later we were back in our way.

Glad we didn't need to call out the breakdown company, the amount of traffic about I'm guessing the waiting time would have been huge.

Quality a sierra 3 door L model next to an xr4i, well I'm guessing the white one is an L not an xr4i with chopped rear window from the lack of a tilt and slide sunroof and an L instead of a base model because it has a hole for the rear wiper.

Looks like a GRP bootlid on the white sierra, bolt holes in the top and a riveted in placca window.

There was another Sierra (blue LX facelift, IIRC), another Nova and Quantum roadster kit car.

I didn't see Drew or anyone else, frankly I suspect they peered out of the window, saw some long-haired nutter in a gold CX, thought "Shit, it's 1997, ARGH" and ran away.

Drew, and the lads around the garage, were into rally, autotesting & so forth. I met them because I was driving my Chevette past their old workshop and spotted an orange one in their shed - so I stopped to see what was up with it. It was an automatic, they wanted the shell for the tunnel, and yes I could have the bumper overriders.

Anyway. Interesting mix. Drew taught me a lot, including handling a RWD car properly, but also never, ever to trust garages or mechanics. Simultaneously sorting random shit free, pitching in to swap the beams on my Dyanes and the like, yet he - or his garage - ripped me off massively and ruined three of my cars, two of which were massively important to me. So, mixed feelings if he had been about. He did, to his credit, not rip me off on bearing replacement on my grey 22TRS at least. Maybe they figured spoiling my CX would  have been a short route to death rather than merely not getting paid ;)

Cartell says you're right. DVLA says it's a 2.0 and on SORN.

:? Somehow between now and Sunday lunchtime I need to get a dry weather window, to fit outside, a towbar and wiring to a Jazz.

Ferry booked and fare paid so it has to be done.  :?

This was my initial thought but then I thought why would someone put a hole in a grp bottled for a rear wiper, also the side windows are fixed in the same method

Renting a Renault Captur at the moment.  It's pretty much brand new - 1400km on the clock - and already the electronic boot release has packed up so all our luggage has to go on the back seat.  Apparently this is normal for Capturs.

The visibility is awful, especially the door mirrors which have been 'styled' so the lower corners have been chopped off.  Otherwise, I suppose I've driven worse.

On the plus side, at least it has a proper handbrake.

Yep. So pressies wrapped for Ma & Sis_Sterling. Mosque attended and monies shot off to Lady_Sterling. As I was passing by some wash 'n' tyre place I decided that the front tyres on the Sterling were long overdue a change so this happened:

To celebrate new tyreage the Sterling actually got washed, again.

As pressies, I received an Inspector Gadget DVD, a Dukes of Hazzard DVD and an original 80s Corgi Dukes of Hazzard Dodge Charger!

My lad came to his car this morning, 2.2 405 diesel. Only to find his clutch pedal on the floor. He pulled it up and all seems ok. I suspect master or slave cylinder leak, hopefully an easy fix. I did offer him the 75 to swan around in till he can sort it out. Apparently he will be fine. Fussy bugger.

Not wanting to watch Christmas TV 'cos it's all shit I took Fatha T's (formerly my) 416 GTi for a blezz this evening. Loved it, nice and comfy with a good ride and feels different to the later R8s. I think in part it's due to the more upright driving position that you get with the earlier type seats. In two years all he's had to do is service it and buy two new tyres, so not bad for a free car.

Have a shite doorstep pic in the dark.

In other news, the speedo in the Cavalier is intermittent and has a tendency to only read up to 55mph. Considering how capable it is on the motorway I need to fix that before I get nicked for speeding.

MOT ran out in June and SORN'd this week owing to me ordering new vehicle until then it was my daily driver. I put it in for a pre-MOT and was told that the brakes (all) were shot, leak on the exhaust, engine requires a service and there is a perished tyre. I have had this vehicle nearly three years and it has proved very reliable for her age. The not so good......bash on the O/S/R door, drivers' and boot locks worn, usual glovebox problem, rear wash/wipe removed (I think the relay has gone), hatch struts not holding hatch up correctly, tinny stereo speakers, over heats when sat in traffic. 10 mins J14 M1. Any queries please message me. I think this is too good to break and I am sure one of you could make better use of it than I currently am. Keep the offers sensible and I will throw in the tyre, krooklock, manual, face off stereo and the required front discs.

I have decided that I really cannot be arsed to drive to Wiltshire tomorrow. If any Midland folk fancy meeting up somewhere near the Welsh border on Monday, speak up. It's a Bank Holiday after all and I need some shite car antics. Just not ten hours of wheeltime's worth.

Visited HML (yes, I know) out of curiosity.  Peak numbers for the Rover 414SLi in 1996 of 37,000 cars.  Most recent figure is 234 (with 200 on SORN).  I'd expected there to be several thousand still chugging about, not less than 300 on the road.  I had better look after this one then, it's well on its way to becoming a rare beastie.

I'd be up for that. Sideboard or BX? Sadly the CX is being held to ransom with pictures of it being posted of it from far flung places.

If it's not too far off the M5 and doesn't involve going over the bridge I might be in. Only the 806 this week though I am afraid

Posted

Ok then. Where do folk suggest? As long as it's Welsh side of the M5 and not Worcester. I hate driving there.

Posted

I don't know the area well enough to suggest anywhere but i like the views of wales. What should I take though?

Posted

I'm probably not about tomorrow, but if the weather is not too bad then  I could suggest. Meet in Church Stretton (big car park by co-op) the town is between Ludlow and Shrewsbury, Then drive up to the gliding club on longmynd.
