I think you forgot the * after bargain, it really needs a full resto.

Yes, but it's not only a pre-production XJ-C it was then modified by Broadspeed using the same parts as the racers, then driven by John Steed !

With provenance like that I can't think of any Jag that didn't win Le Mans ( apart from the XJ13) that could ever be worth more- to me at least.post-17414-0-07193100-1445020821_thumb.jpg

I think the battery on the Volvo has died.  It needed a jump this evening, which it normally does when it's been left sat for a week, but then I drove it 12 miles and the battery still didn't have enough go to start the car.  Alternator is fine as it's putting out just over 14v at idle, so must be the battery.  Another fugging expense I could really do without at the moment.

The red Rover is still nomming water at a rate of knots (needs to be topped up every 50 miles or so).  Not too bad at the moment as I can just tip tap water in, but when it gets cold enough to need antifreeze it could start getting expensive.  Not sure where it's going - it's not showing any of the other signs of HGF, but I can't find any obvious leaks either.  I tipped a Wynn's treatment in a couple of weeks ago, which doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference - I might have to fork out for a bottle of K-Seal.  It's a great little car other than that and I love driving it.

The Perodua is in for its test in the morning.  Battery charged, headlight aim tweaked, rear foglight bulb replaced (it's one of those modern capless ones so three times the price of a normal 21w bulb), and fingers crossed.  If it passes I'll see if I can sort the charging issue, then it can take over daily duties for a while.

1L of premixed antifreeze from Poundland probably your cheapest option.

Financial shuffling done - so two collections between now & next week, and one of the stricken Mercedes will have to go. Mystery car will be revealed. What a month this has been!

Changing the meriva exhaust, got the back box off (which I wasnt planning to replace) and all this shit fell out...

Bottom line, if I empty all the crap out, will it still pass the mot pending soonish replacement, or do I need to get a new backbox asap?

Posted

I think it'll pass the MOT as long as the outside of the box is intact and only emitting exhaust from the rear pipe, not blowing anywhere else.

Posted

It shouldnt be blowing anywhere else now, that was all on the centre pipe.

Cool, a job for another month then

I don't know which Rover you've got, but you mentioned K-Seal so I'm going to assume K series and R8. If so, it's probably leaking from the inlet manifold gasket like mine, which also needs a little drop of water every 50-100 miles but is otherwise showing no signs at all of OMGHGF. Check to see if it's all wet on the bulkhead side of the block and around the inlet manifold, if it is then chances are that's your problem. Maybe.

Exhaust changed, and the rear sticky caliper tickled, but one of the pads has worn at an angle, and the disc seems to be ever so slightly warped so thats a job for next year!

Didnt realise the old exhaust was so fucked by the backbox either

I knew about this bit though, stupid oil leak...

Is very much non blowy now too! Even the lambda sensor came out with no fuss, which I was worried about

LIst of shit to do next year already though:

Rear discs, pads and caliper cleanup

New backbox

New bonnet stay catch cos the old one snapped off and it rattles around if you dont shut the bonnet with a bit of care.

2 tyres

Its a good job all vauxhalls are lovely isnt it...

The Honda's flexi looks a lot like that. Wonder how hard they are to get in decent secondhand condition, I bet they're expensive new.

Off on my first Megabus powered collection mission. Not off to a great start as the bus turned up 20 minutes late, but I have an hour turnaround time at Victoria so hopefully won't be too much of a drawback. Purchase is nowt exciting and it's a bloody long way away but at least it's cheap.

Don't, apart from having loads of room and great aircon they are unbelievably shite, I bought a gold 2 litre petrol one because the missus liked it, front suspension made of cheese, noisy gutless thirsty engine (25mpg) and the turning circle of a supertaker, the dashboard is ok in a retro sort of way, sold it and bought a zafira which was much better.

This excellent thread from Reddit about covers the topic...

I actually washed two members of the fleet today.

XM was properly filthy, as I think I last washed it in July. So nice to go around the door shuts. I should be rebuilding the front caliper, but I've just remembered that I haven't ordered any of the bits yet. Fail.

2004 mk2 Caddy TDI. It goes really well and is not back breakingly uncomfortable but the driver's seat is set too high.

Just bought a spare fuel filter and I am about to chuck some veg in it

Hey gang, I'm going to be a bit naughty now, sorry :(

...but there are lots of clever and wise people on here so I was hoping to pick your brains:

The Audi (A6. C6. 2.0Tdi) has developed a problem, I was over taking something and for a second it lost power then the little engine symbol came on on the dash. Since then it is slow to accelerate taking an age to pick up speed and then all of a sudden zooms off.

Plugged a code reader in and got P0404, P0406 which are EGR related and VAG code 01027 (this said rear warm air fan V47 static, but google tells me that this is also an EGR code).

Anyhow I figured I had little to lose by taking the valve off and cleaning it out, and hopefully it would solve the problem.

It was a touch on the mucky side of shipshape and shiny:

I cleaned up, whacked it back on and it still doesn't work :( Lost the P0406 code but the P0404 remains. Symptoms as above, sluggish and slow and then all of a sudden it picks up.

Seeing as I have just about reached the limits of my brain and ability, do I need to consider anything else or do I just take it that the EGR valve was not just dirty but dirty AND broken, and put a new one on?

Thank for tolerating a non-shite question.

Now sat in that there London in the worst traffic of ever due to some twats protesting outside Parliament. Probably going to miss my connection. Fucksticks.

If you've still got EGR codes, then yeah it looks like you need a new one. Certainly a garage would just bosh another on, if you've read the codes then it can't be much else.

Unlike relying on dash lights on VAG which could mean anything, the glowplug light is often used as a secondary fault lamp and means anything but faulty glowplugs!

Does your reader clear codes BTW? The 0404 might be persistent until cleared whilst 0406 is a code that only registers when the fault is there.

Posted

Thanks Pillock, yes I cleared the codes and then took it for a spin, got the same symptoms but no dash warning, plugged the reader in and got the 0404. The valves seem expensive but I guess I'm saving a bit doing it myself.

Re the Audi.......any adjoining pipe work mucky or got a bend that could maybe get blocked?

Also sounds like a variable vane turbo not being variable anymore.......then all the whoosh happens in one go.

Posted

Thanks Alf, I wondered about the turbo, are the monitoring/diagnostic systems fairly comprehensive, or might it be possible to have this kind of turbo fault but no codes?
