Beetle suffered an ftp today, ran out of fuel. Decided to surprise kids by picking them up from school in the Beetle, my fault as soppy bollocks here thought he would play petrol gauge roulette and failed.

Lots of frantic phone calls to get picked up to get other car and phone school to say ill be late or picking up kids!!

Managed to get kids and car home so all ok.

Pissed off with myself for being a twat!!!!

Have just purchased this little beauty.e8858ec4d8326274f69e09e8dc7eb85a.jpg

Picked it up from deepest Hertfordshire and drove the 90 miles back with absolutely no incident. It really is as clean as it looks!

Astra has found a new home with RELAYSHUNS of The Moog - pleasure to meet Owain. Hope the car serves you well.

I liked ours very much but they really do know how to rot - my mate has just scrapped an 02 plate example.

Advice? Learn to weld or find somebody who can. They can sometimes have ka levels of rot.

For the first time since May, I'm off on a collection mission on Sunday.  Actually, it'll be the first proper long one since January seeing as the May one was a fairly local swap for a car I'd already owned before so it didn't really count.

Ah, you'll have to wait and see.

However, I can confirm that the two cars I've really fancied for a while now are a Jaguar XJ40 and a Seat Marbella.

Make of that what you will.

No idea. Just pour it in when it needs it.

It spends most of its life rattling round town on short trips. It won't be great in that use, so i simply don't work it out. Much happier.

Wise words, Cant cost anymore to run than my V6 at the moment, yours looks like a nice motor so thats another model to keep an eye out for.

Reg docs came through for the 404 today. I always shit myself a bit when trying to get a car UK reg'd, you're really at the mercy of the Swansea drones and with all the DVLA shit going on at the moment I was doubly nervous. Turns out I didn't have anything to worry about and it's now fully UK legal, even if they managed to miss the 404 bit out so it's just a Peugeot unknown.

Also got a 'worst case scenario' quote for the engine rebuild. It's about five times more than I'd spend on a car normally, but split two ways it's not too bad and it's gonna be worth it to have it running at its best. Just need to start saving some pennies and hopefully it'll be sorted by my birthday in January. The drive back (from Northern france) is gonna be great

Awesome, can't wait to hear about your collection of a Ford Transit.

Nah, I was offered one recently as it happens but don't fancy a Transit right now.  Not the sort I can afford, anyway.

Good advice Bren - luckily mine hasn't gone too bad rot-wise. The rear arches have a small amount of corrosion and the door seal/B pillar has a bit of rot in it but nowhere near as bad as some I've seen. I just don't want it to go worse over winter!

Apologies for the close-up pic but this is the worst side...

arch_zpsl1x4vrff.jpg

Caused by a mud-trap between the felt (?) arch liner and the back of the arch itself. I blasted as much crud away as I could earlier with a pressure washer then cleaned the inner arches by hand.

All that felt is a crap idea

I tried to put a rear brake pipe on one that had just failed the mot. While undoing the union the bracket came off with a large chunk of rust and metal. Needed lots of welding that it hadnt even failed on in the first place

^^ That's the level of arch rot mine had at 8 years old in 2006 so it's doing pretty well!  Mind you, it didn't seem to get any worse for 2 years until I had a call from the MOT garage saying 'umm, you might want to come and look at this'.  As it turned out, the immaculate, spotless sills were paper thin, having dissolved from the inside out and he'd made a foot long hole in one with some gentle taps of his hammer.  8 years after I traded it in, I'm mildly astonished that, as of a few weeks ago, someone in a nearby town still has it, looking very tatty and heavily tidemarked but intact nonetheless.

Definitely worth keeping it very clean under the arches and sills, mine spent years being run up and down flooded, muddy country lanes and was usually caked in layers of mud which wouldn't have done it any favours at all.

Seem to have developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession regarding the GS Birotor, which has led me into wasting twenty-odd quid on acquiring a brochure from French eBay.

GS-1_zpstejhtya2.jpg

What's not to like?

LHD only? Check.

Usual GS structural rusting capabilities? Check.

Unique & made from unobtainium flared wings / many other panels & trim / modified CX front subframe? Check.

Unreliable, sub 15mpg wankel engine mated to jerky c-matic gearbox? Check.

I think the boat has sailed when it comes to people of average means buying one - But has any of the AS masseeeeeve ever driven one?

There is a very slight chance that there might just be a rusty Panhard coming my way in the near future.

Roffletastic blue Suzuki Baleno, conked out yesterday in the middle of a 600 miles trip.

Apparently it included loads of black smoke and a bang.

I'm supposed to find out today what actually happened but the keeper is adamant that he will put it back on the road as "it's the best car he ever had!"

Is there such a thing as a "pity car"?

Well, I've got my Discovery in bits again... this time to replace the leaking "P" gasket between the water pump housing & the block.

I changed it about a year ago, but then had all kinds of problems with several defective new radiators being supplied (causing a coolant leak) which seems to have masked an ongoing leak from the "P" gasket. So either I didn't tighten the bolts up properly the first time - always a possibility - or I've got other problems.

Current state of play... water pump housing removed.

I'll crack on with it again this evening...

In an attempt to feel a bit better I decided to start the civic job.

Got missus Moog standing on brakes and used my new impact driver. Frankly it seemed a bit shit and bit soft. Previous one have given massive whacks.

Instead used a big breaker bar and off came the hub nut. The handbrake has stuck on (again) so couldn't out it up the drive so I will have to do it in the road.

It looks like a Panhard is coming my way just need to sort transport. It is a rare L9 estate that was in this months classic and sportscar discovered section. It has some serious rot in the roof but nothing that time and cash can't fix

Those j and r driveshafts are great , I've been using them for years and never had a joint or boot fail . For the fleet of hi lux's I do a cv joint kit from them is cheaper than a boot from the factors ! Boots last well and fit perfectly too .

How can they do it for that price ?

You can tell the price of scrap is on its arse - went to Cambridge yesterday, and as you start to get perhaps 20 miles from the city there's POLICE AWARE stickers all over the shop.

Early 2000s BMW 3-series tourer, eastbound on A14 in a field entrance, busted window.

Similar age saloon 3-series, on a roundabout in the middle of cambridge with a wheel missing.

Saab 9000 westbound A14 around Huntingdon, looked scruffy but complete.

6 months ago they'd have been gone before the glue was dry on the stickers. Now it's not worth firing up the HiAb.

That must be why I;ve seen so many. There's been a polish leon in a layby near our local asda for months, and apparently a volvo estate nearby too. The leon is right next to a pikey camp, so for that to still be there things must be bad. For the volvo to not have been taken up to scotland yet things must be worse than we thought!

Wonder if this means I can finally buy an OK £50 car like all you older guys say used to happen...
