I just made a slight miscalculation and appear to have won an ebay auction for another car I don't need .... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201389036756

Fleet reduction failure

On the plus side I should be starting a new job next week so might be able to pay for it.

I went to the local Dacia dealer again today. I don't know why I bothered, as they clearly don't want to sell anything. Is it really so difficult to have more than two cars available? I fancy a scan at one of those horrible looking non-body coloured bumpered £5,995 things, but I CBA anymore.

My local Dacia dealer didn't have any base-spec models either.  The best they could do is to offer me a drive in a top-of-the-range DCi Lauréate to get a feel for the car, and then a 1.2 Clio to try out the engine.

I've also heard rumours online of the base-spec white cars being less well finished than the more expensive models (thinner paint etc), and getting surface rust quite early on.

So now to try find a BX with nice seats in a breakers. I can see that being an easy* straightforward* job.

There's a guy near Heathrow with a field full of BX breakers and warehouses full of bits. No doubt he has several sets of seats, but I have no idea how to get in touch with him or how expensive he is. Can make enquiries if you really want but I am really lazy so no guarantees

I think I've been there. I think I decided that, like many of these types, it's impossible to actually buy anything. Definitely one of 'that' breed. Tons of useful stuff sitting around just going to waste.

Sounds about right. In my limited experience, excluding people on this forum, BX people are morons and I have very little time for them. This bloke did half-assedly start advertising stuff on the Facebook page quite recently though but even I couldn't be bothered trying to deal with him despite him probably having everything I need to restore mine to concours spec

I heard this story about cars being hacked and thought meh but having seen this video it looks like the car is seriously compromised. By the looks of it they're connecting to the vehicles entertainment system then sending particular commands through the CANBUS to make the car do certain things. The more things hooked up to CAN then more things they can control including disabling the brakes.

I think my Cortina is safe mind you.

Though someone had hacked the reliant this morning, turns out i have pulled the heater cable rather than the choke.

My beloved 'Onda has been playing silly buggers today. No idea why. No electric motors working, then, woooossssh and it's got full assist. Feels like a REALLY badly behaved turbo motor.

It will 'probably' be fine tomorrow as it has these little foibles! If you want a car with 'character' buy a hybrid! :)

It really is a most odd car and no chance of ever getting bored of it as it drives differently every day. Today was it's first episode of no boost/full boost with no warning but some days it wants to be electric most of the time and others it has bugger all electric power and spends the complete journey charging itself.

That sums up exactly what I like about a car.

These batteries do not like periods of little use, they self discharge at quite a high rate. As they are a stack of small cells in series, the performance of the battery is limited by the weakest cell in the chain. When the assist and or/ charge indicator dissapears, as you describe, it will be because the battery controller is "re-calibrating" to try and find either the maximum or minimum charge condition. I think you have said your weekly mileage is very low: take it on a cross country thrash and all will be well.

I don't understand why Honda hybrids don't have connections for a trickle charger. The one I have fitted to my Mk1 Insight is well worth the trouble and has completely overcome these weird "charge calibration " issues.

Decided to do a couple jobs on 9-5

First off the exhaust is blowing again. I thought that the flange had broken again. The garage welded the exhaust for MOT so it looks like it has held.

Instead covered it with Gungum.

Had a few issues with hot starts recently which googling leads to CPS.

Swapped a new one in which took a good 25 mins fiddling about with the bloomin small heat shield.

Bumhats- exhaust is definitely puffing out smoke. It is blueish and so think turbo is lunched. Would explain oil disappearing when I got it, if it hadn't got a new MOT I would sack it off.

Managed to find a brand new replacement for £130 off eBay, so will be fitting that next week.

Could have upgraded it for a TD04 from aero but would have cost double that.

Got home around 8pm last night and found the rear reg plate for my Focus was on the floor behind the car. Didn't think much about it, front one was still fitted so I figured that the sticky pads must have given up the ghost. Refitted the plate and didn't think any more about it.

3am something woke me so I did what I always do, which is go for a mile or so walk. As I'm leaving the house I noticed the rear reg from the Focus was missing and that the front one had also gone. Some scumbag has whipped them. So I ring Dibble and explain what's happened. Dibble gives me a log number and tells me they've put a note on the system.

5am I hear the dulcet tones of Dibble radio, look out of the window and there's a copper wandering around my Focus. I get dressed and go to sporák with him. Turns out there's been 'a crime committed in Cheshire' my reg plates have set off ANPR so they've sent a copper to see if my car was outside my house. Which it is, with no reg plates, a light misting of dew, and rusty brake discs.

So. I've got to go and buy new plates in the morning. Dibble has told me how to make them identifiable so ANPR folk will know they're the right plates and not the stolen ones.

Turns out its a new trend for the baddies of Cheshire to steal plates in Liverpool or Manchester, go and do their naughty deeds and then when they're on their way home it looks like they're heading to where the car is registered, thus throwing Dibble off the trail.

Just what I bloody need.

Recently I have had major beef with my Cortina.

It has some sort of fuel starvation issue, sometimes I'm driving along and the car just conks out and tries to keep running but never manages, I get out, take the fuel pipe of the feed side of the pump and blow in the filler till fuel comes out and it will run fine no problem.

The most annoying part is I have changed pretty much every logical thing.

New mechanical fuel pump

Replaced that with electric fuel pump

Cleaned out fuel tank thoroughly

Changed fuel pipe to a new solid copper one

Fitted a new filter to tank sender pickup, also tried removing it altogether

I have recently fitted a weber dcd but it did it before I swapped this on so I'm ruling it out.

Anyone got any suggestions as I'm getting pissed off.

Just spotted this, I had similar issues with my Galaxie.

My current set is:-

Tank cleaned, repaired and lined

New pick-up in the tank

new in-line fuel filter

electric pump fitted within 300mm of the tank and at the same height as the base of the tank

new hard fuel pipe running from the tank (under boot floor) to the engine

good quality non-return valve (cheap ebay ones were a waste of time)

fuel pressure regulator

new in-line filter

carb

that sorted it, although I accept it's a very belt & braces approach. It works, so sod it...

been able to go through the insurance to sort my smashed window. Autoglass have fitted a clear sheet so at least it won't get wet, but being pillarless doors it means I have to get in via the passenger side. They're waiting on Peugeot to say when they can fit the glass, and it's hardly the most common car in the world. Excess was £75, so just have to hope the mother agrees to pay

Long ago, driving home from Weymouth to Wallsend in my 130Rapid Skoda, the passenger quarter light shattered, bit of a bang!! I used to travel up and down every weekend so knew of a Skoda garage along the way... 5PM Friday and half dark.

I pulled in and caught the owner - old skool and a 'few breakers' round the back - he charged me a very reasonable sum for the glass [koop specific], half the partlist£ and I whipped it out.

Autoglass would have been a Saturday job/backorder.

$hiteist FTW ;)

Am today filling in the V62 for the Dyane. Bloomin' frustrating that it could easily be four weeks before I get a log book, and there's no way of legally driving the vehicle (and therefore taxing it) until it arrives. The car itself could be ready in a couple of weeks. I'd love to be able to take it to Anglesey for the 24-hour 2CV race (and public track session). But that's in four week's time.

Cheers for that, I've done a bit more work on it recently but still haven't solved the issue.

I've now cut some of the seal off the fuel cap, installed a 5/16" copper fuel pipe, added a fuel filter and still not working right.

Next step is try the electric pump near the tank but also retain the mechanical pump.

I have a feeling the problem is vapour lock and hopefully the theory is the electric pump will pump some cold fuel up and displace the vapour.

Posted

The only sure cure for vapour lock problems is a second, return fuel line to the tank, from as close to the float valve as possible. This line has a restrictor, ie a plug with a tiny hole in it, so bubbles of vapour or air are returned to the tank, together with a small flow of fuel.

I've just done something car related but quite un-Autoshite, the result of which will be displayed in a couple of months time. Just off to put my trousers out, C U L8R.

Could you tow/trailer it there?

Yes, but I don't think it would then be allowed on the track day. They usually stipulate that cars must be road legal I think. I really can't be arsed to tow it home from Wiltshire, then tow it several hours further north just for a bit of track fun. I'll stick to the plan to drive it home after an MOT pass. If that's not before Anglesey, then hopefully it will be before ShitefestChumleighRaid.

Another day A4ing is afoot - started with a trip to ECP (there was a Manta in the car park). Over the coming days: replacing a brake hose (perished), fuel pump/filter (blocked), serpentine belt (ECP gave us one for a 4-cylinder at first, it's a V6), new brake fluid, and a steering arm joint. Then we went to Halfrauds for a brake pipe spanner. Get out of the car, and start to walk away.

ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

'What's that?' I think, and turn around to see steam pouring out of the grille of the A4. As I stand there some twunt in a brand new Galaxy parks up across two spaces, OSF corner of said Galaxy is pretty much up my arse, cheers...

Anyway, open the bonnet.

Expansion tank's cracked.
