Should make decent coin. There seems to be a fairly strong market for Mk1's.

To be honest I don't really know what it's worth, I was going to advertise it for £3250 and see what interest it gets.

Hello, I am new.

I had been on the blue forum for a while, but...well....this place seems to fit my world-view a lot better.

I've been up since 3.30 this morning.  The reason being that I had to get to Fareham to pick up my new daily (another French diesel - my reasoning being that if I keep on buying them, sooner or later I'll come across one that lasts more than two weeks) and then up to Kings Lynn in time for the classic auction.

Didn't quite work out, what with the taxi driver getting lost (he did at least have the decency to turn off the meter after the third U-turn), the M25 being bad and me being a twat and turning the wrong way down the A3 after pulling out of the services, but I got to the auction by about 2 and got to perv over all the CX's (including a lovely Prestige and a gold Familiale C-matic that was the absolute spit of my old one, albeit without the cracked paint on the roof) and the red Renault 6, which wasn't immaculate but still a metric f*ckload cleaner than mine.  The 120-miles-from-new Volvo 340 made about five grand, despite being a 1.7 and having a dent on the front wing - I didn't stay to the end so didn't see what the OMGBARNFIND 202-mile Renault 5 Campus made.  That red and yellow Winnebago thing that's been hanging around for ages sold (apparently) for 200 quid, which is a proper barg for someone with the means to transport it and the space to store it (so not me then).

What did the CXs go for? The prestigte T2 looked great. I bought my w124 from Patrick who was selling all the citroens there.

As an aside, there was a rwd redtop one on eBay a few weeks back-looked a right laugh and well nailed together..

The guy who built c20ltr is a mate of a mate, it looked a good bit of fun it had no turning lock though

TV2's oil leak is definitely from the engine's rear main oil seal. This is the leak after leaving the car for 24 hours:

I'm hoping that I'll be able to sort it out using some pro-grade engine oil stop leak additive. If not, I may have to get another car, as I don't fancy the expense of getting the seal replaced at a garage and certainly have no desire to replace it on a DIY basis.

After my old man saying how much he liked my stag, I said do you want it?

So it went today, which is good. As my bank balance has improved, it's at my dads so it's only 6 miles away, and I can still use it when I want.

All round win.

I had it for around 9 months, it never used a beat. Passed its mot on mon with no advisories.

I serviced it, flushed the coolant and fitted elec ign. Which ballsed up the cold starting a little. That's all.

I clocked up about 3-4000 miles in it and used it loads over winter, when my commute was a 66 mile round trip.

I also noticed that older black gentleman seemed to absolutely love it. Which was odd.

Bad luck shepoloid. Engine or box out to replace a rubber seal. Urgh!

Had some lad round looking at my Doblo today. blah blah blah, but once again I got PLAYED! Damn it!!

I said to this dude 'You've got my number - just let me know if you decide you are not buying this van after all OK?' "Oh yes well of course I'll do that, no problem" Do you think he made that call? Fuckers man.

I have started to get a few calls and texts about it though so I think the moons will come into alignment fairly soon. Had a bit of a faff on with it yesterday so i think I will chuck some new glow plugs in before I let anyone else come and see it.

I found a load more pictures here. In addition to the cars already mentioned there's a collapsed 2 door MK1 Escort, Rover 213, MK3 Cavalier saloon and a MK3 Fiesta (last taxed 2000). I'm intrigued to know if they were dumped because they were stolen or because at the time you had to pay to have scrap cars taken away. https://www.facebook.com/aaron.baker.777/media_set?set=a.613467145413965.1073741829.100002520564351&type=1

If that Escort has a vin plate and is a 2-dr tax exempt it could raise ££££££ for the taxpayer

I'd have thought that a RWD version would benefit from not having driveshafts at the front to limit lock?

Deffo a Mk1, it has a sporty steering wheel too. I bet it's been down there 30 years.

Not much today. Ordered £100 worth of spares for the rangie. She is really beginning to look quite good, so I felt it warranted some non-necessary bits and a new set of HD springs.

Went to look at a Sirion today - it was goosed, totally goosed. Maybe checking out a rover 25 tomorrow ;)

Thanks Trig! Some very interesting stuff there. Kind of sad aswell when you think it was someones pride and joy once only to suffer this.

This afternoon, we took the Cherry Europe GTi out and put some miles on it. Apart from taking it for an MOT, this is the first time it's been out since I bought it, as I didn't want to tax it until the start of the month. You know all those articles on places like MSN and various half arsed motoring blogs that list the '10 worst cars of EVAH' and always include the Arna / Europe? They are wrong. It's GR8.

When it's cold it feels awkward and sluggish with a stiff gear change but once everything has warmed up it's like a different car. It's not amazingly fast in line with most 80's hot hatches but it's plenty of fun to hustle along country lanes. The steering is razor sharp and it's cornering ability totally caught me out the first time I chucked it into a bend fast. I expected plenty of understeer and aimed it according... but there was none. In fact it's more likely I'd run out of bravery before it'd run out of grip. It does have Pirelli Cinturatos on it which no doubt helps. The brakes never felt inadequate at any point either... so much so that I never even gave them a though until now. It sounds really sweet too when given some stick. Proper Alfa raspy exhaust note and a bit of induction noise from the Delortoes. The gearing is surprisingly long for a 1.5 but that does mean it cruises nicely at 70 or 80 without much engine noise, albeit at the cost of some acceleration I'd wager . There's not a lot of soundproofing in it under the carpet, so road noise is the loudest intrusion at speed. Ambling along at 50-ish, it's actually remarkably quiet and comfortable.

All in all, it seems amazing that this model received such bad press in the latter years as there's really not much to complain about at all. Interestingly, I have heaps of info on these cars including lots of magazine articles and road tests from some of the countries they were sold in and none of the contemporary road tests, not even the Italian ones, gave it bad reviews. Most were fairly complimentary in fact.

I am off to this shortly http://www.ottervaleclassiccarauction.co.uk/ottervale/April_Auction_Entries.html Plenty of old shite on offer over 2 days. What is it with the admission only by catalog 10 quid to go and bid on the shite. I suppose it might deter all the old gits that turn out just to poke through someones  crap

Not a bad way to pass a couple of hours including a spot of off-roading in a Renault 5. I was very restrained but kind of wished I'd put my hand up for a coupe of bits and pieces that went for only a pound or two including some semi-decent MGB and 3dr Sierra panels which I was surprised about.

The highlight was probably the mouldy Humber Hawk estate which made a healthy £1050 and actually under the green and brown muck was pretty solid with a very nice interior.  A tidy but un-MOT'd Sierra XR4i didn't sell with a highest bid of £800.  I was slightly tempted by a very tidy, low mileage, fully T&T'd Saab 9000 2.3 in finest metallic beige - guide was a highly ambitious £600-700 but the solitary bid of £300 wasn't accepted.  The Alvis made £44k!

Got a good look at panhard65's new Maestro van, it's definitely a little cosmetically challenged with patches hanging off the sills but ought to look pretty good when it's sorted.

This is my latest attempt at buying a French diesel to take over from the Toyota as a daily.

DSCF8884_zps123e5ddc.jpg

It's a Grand Scenic Dynamique 1.5 DCi, in a delightful shade of metallic piss.  I had a Scenic this shape before, with the 1.4 petrol engine, and it was hopeless - woefully underpowered, which in turn meant fuel consumption was dire.  This seems rather better - I think the power output is about the same as the 1.4 pez, but it has a shitload more torque, so despite being the LWB 7-seater version it goes OK.

This is my first experience of the 1.5 DCi.  It's a bit growlier than I expected, but otherwise no great surprises.  It's hopeless off boost but the turbo kicks in quite quickly and then it does a reasonable job of picking up its skirts, although it's never going to worry a BMW 335D.

It didn't make a great first impression, as it went into some kind of limp mode about two miles from the seller's house (and about 200 miles from mine...).  The EML didn't come on, but it lost almost all of its power, was smoking like a pig and diesel knocking like an absolute bastard.  It wouldn't do more than about 35 on the flat, and ground almost to a complete halt uphill.  Switching it off and switching it back on again didn't clear the fault, but pulling over into a pub car park and revving the bollocks off it in neutral for a minute or so did the trick, and it's been fine ever since.

I understand the 1.5 is less prone to self-immolation than the larger Renault diesels, so I'm hoping this one will last a bit longer than the Laguna.  As long as the electrics don't shit themselves.  Still, it was very cheap, so even if it does die after a few days I shouldn't lose too much.  It's tested until the end of July; it has a crack in the passenger side of the screen (part of the reason why it was cheap) so if it lasts until then it'll probably end up being sold for spares.  Until then, the boot is big enough to sling my bike in and the computer reckons it's averaging over 50mpg, so it should be ideal for daily duties.

Jeezus wuvs man. You're a maverick, livin' life on the edge!!!! A bit like James Dean but with a diesel Renault Scenic.

Princess dilemmas at the moment.  Fate of the orange car definitely sealed now it's chopped up.  Beige car is in my brother's lovely dry garage where we can work in all weathers should we need to and we'll be getting all the annoying niggles that the MoT doesn't care about sorted along with the important stuff.  If I get it sorted this week - possible, but not likely in all honesty - then I'll carry on as normal.  I may end up dragging the red Princess up to my brother's so we can work through the last few bits it needs and I'll use that as a short term daily while the beige one gets some love.

I still don't know if the red Princess is going to be ready for Shitefest, it doesn't want for much now at all, but I've been struggling to find the time to sort it because of the beige one being broken and the surprise orange car and, of course, work actually not being dead.

Finally, tonight I went to look at a Mystery American Car which turned out to be a 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix.  I may know someone that wants it, if they don't I'll get some info to share because it's a pretty oddball thing, let alone to see in the UK.

Nah, he's just mental. Proper stark raving mental, in a hopeful ostrich sort of way. Good luck with it!

We've just got those Nissan NV200 vans at work (the ones that look like Bender from Futurama) and they have a 1.5 lump which I think is a Renault job. They seem to pull pretty well and appear quite refined, but it's (very) early days yet.

Ratdat - I think most complaints about the Arna stem from the fact that it isn't exactly a looker. If you're going for the sportier side of hatchback motoring, then looks are all important. A Datsun with some spoilers isn't really going to cut it.

Mind you, the Subaru Impreza is a horrific looking pile of dung when you strip the go-fast stuff off it, so perhaps I'm talking rubbish.
