Nope. G4-coloured 90. Everything was pretty close to stock today, which was nice. I much prefer travelling with cars that don't look like they've been kitted out to take on the Amazon. Interestingly, there were three Discos, all three-door (mine the only 200).

On my way back from Norwich this afternoon, I came across a Ford C-Max upside down in the middle of a roundabout.  It had obviously just happened as there were a couple of cars just pulling up and people running across to help.  I stopped and went to investigate - turns out it was an old boy (well into his 80s) who had just driven straight into the roundabout and flipped the car over forwards.  It was a bit of a mess - broken glass, leaking pez etc., and there were flames in the engine bay.

A few of the people who had stopped managed to get the old boy and his equally old Mrs. out (old boy was very much in shock, Mrs. seemed to be doing rather better - no visible injuries to either apart from bruising to the old boy's nose presumably from the airbag), but there was a passenger trapped in the back, held in by her seatbelt and the other back seats which had half folded up and were preventing anyone from getting to her.  I had a gallon of water in the back of the car which I chucked into the engine bay, and that got rid of the flames and seems to have cooled the exhaust enough to stop it igniting any more of the leaking petrol.  Plod were there within five minutes, followed a couple of minutes later by a paramedic; fire brigade were another two minutes behind.  I think the passenger in the back was going to need to be cut out, but she was talking so I'm hoping she was OK - once the professionals arrived I buggered off so as not to get in the way.  Local rag says three injuries but no more details than that.

So I find myself forced to withdraw at least a couple of the rude comments I've made about thick A-pillars - the thing had somersaulted forward onto its roof, but there was very little distortion, and one of the back doors still opened (unfortunately the one on the opposite side from the passenger).  The old lady was able to climb out by herself through the broken driver's door window.  If an '80s motor had come down on its roof like that, chances are they'd have been scooping the passengers up with a spoon.

I do, however, reiterate all of my rude comments about old people behind the wheel.

Bloody Hell Dave, no wonder you said that you've had a shit day, that must have been a shock for you. At least nobody seems to have been seriously hurt and the car didn't burst into flames, that would have been horrific.

I've noticed recently my reliable Honda-engined R8 has been kicking out a fair bit of white smoke too, and is getting more clattery. I should spend money to get it looked at but I'm really starting to hate that bastard engine, me want torque not revs. It sounds like a diesel but with dire economy so is the worst of both worlds.

Edit: Blimey you've had a fun day Dave, a few drinks are needed after that I reckon.

Only a shiter would carry this much water in the boot (and think what to do with it).  This is a proper public service we're providing here.

Seriously Wuv, well done for presence of mind: as Rob says, now chill out with a hearty amount of your beverage of choice.

I suspect a Honda engine was never really going to be your thing? ;-)

Well, quite. My want for an R8 made me overlook the fact it had the RONG engine in it! Lesson learnt, never again a Honda.

My Grandad once had a 216 GTi as a courtesy car when his 1.8-litre Astra CD was in for repairs.  He didn't think much of it either - his conclusion was "it needs a turbo and an extra gear".

That's what got me to be honest.  I was fine at the time, but as I was driving home my mind started to go through what might have happened if the car had caught fire, and that's what shook me up.  I've poured myself a generous serving from the bottle of Gewürzbitter that the nice German man who bought my P6 gave me, and it seems to be having the desired effect.

It was swap around day and time for my SD1 to go back in my garage. It fired up okay and I let it sit for 10 minutes running before I headed down the road to my garage.

I had about 6 bags of shite to take to the tip so I put them in the Rover with the intention of swapping them into a more, erm legal motor vehicle (the ZX) at the garage to actually take it to the dump.

Of course the ZX cranked about 70 times before the battery going flat so had to jump it off the SD1. After this I went to start the Jag that's currently in the garage but like a twat I'd left the door open and the battery had gone flat so I had to jump this off the ZX. I went to the tip and came back and the bastard wouldn't start again so I had to jump it off the Rover! What a pain in the hole

Jump it baby jump it

The SD1 had been parked up for half an hour and when I moved it this was there. Bastard. It looks like it's the crankshaft oil seat a common SD1 leak hole.

I managed got the XJR out and it's looking pretty good for it's freshen up. This is probably only time these two will be together. The ZX isn't allowed in the picture as it's in the bad books.

These trolley things are flipping fantastic. I managed to get the car right over to the far wall with no bother leaving loads of space for other tinkering.

The plans is to sell the XJR but every time I drive it I change my mind. One of them needs to go!

cort16: I'm often the same, I decide to sell a car, then take it for a drive and change my mind. I now try not to drive a car once I decide it's to be sold.

A couple of grand. IIt's not perfect bodywork wise but it's presentable and goes extremely quickly.

I seriously considered selling the SD1 and keeping this but I can always buy another XJR but I've put a lot of time and effort in the SD1. If only it would behave !

Hi guys. Sorry I've not been on here in ages but it's been a very busy time for various reasons and reading about shite has had to take a back seat.

But, I do want to say that if anyone happens to have a cheap(ish), reliable estate car they want shot of then I might well be in the market for one, so please give me a shout.

Now, I'd better crack on with those 785 unread threads...

Junkman - Pug 405

Scooters - Volvo T5

There may be others, but those are the estates that spring to mind

I may have an extremely cheap estate for sale.  The reliability thing might be a bit of a sticking point though.

Peugeot 406 2.1 TD.  Taxedn'n'tested but scruffy as hell and currently running like a bag of shit at idle / low revs - although to be fair it hasn't actually broken down so far, and pulls as well as it ever did when you floor it.  Got a towbar and 7 seats too.

Temperature guage is getting slightly worrying on the Sterling. It went only a tiny bit today and the coolant does seem to get low in a short time. Also whilst stationary, there is a tiny, tiny amount of unsettlement/shaking. But the heaters are still burningly hot and the car picks up speed/power as good as it ever has done so I could be just paranoid.

No news on my beloved 306 at the MOT garage, I'm expecting a reasonably hefty bill for it but don't mind too much as the car pays for itself as it goes along.

This has pushed me into using the bargain bucket Corsa B as a daily, which repays me by illuminating my knackers with the faint orange glow of the EML. Nothing obvious seems to be causing it and it's too old for any of that limp mode shenanigans (thankfully) so I just ignore it and it comes and goes as it pleases. It's hard to start when hot and in urgent need of a service, but it's surprisingly good at cycle fetching/dropping off duties and probably as good as the 306 on fuel.

The only inconvenience really is the fact it's a 3 door, so taking wife, daughter and dog out means faffing about a bit, but no real hardship. Assuming everything pans out ok I'm going to keep it as my second car if the 306 gets through it's MOT, it's never going to be worth a massive amount so I don't think I'll try and sell it now, least not for as long as possible anyhow.

I got pulled up in it yesterday as I'd not added it to the database, but the copper was brilliant and took my word for it as I didn't really have any ID on me.

What plate is your corsa? Our 3 pot was on a x plate. When Eml came on it wouldnt exceed 60. Admitted it didn't go a whole lot faster with it off!

Posted

It's a V plate, 1999, Bub. It's the same lump as in my son's 2001 Corsa C.

They take a bit of working, but they can crack motorway speeds without too much effort I find and I'm used to slow cars so just try and read the road a bit better!

Sigmund Fraud - Volvo 740

A fellow 'shitter visited Fraud towers earlier today and drove the 740 away !!!

I'm very disappointed and can certainly say that this place isn't what it used to be... No hilarious TXT SPK offers, nobody offering a barn find Kreidler Florett in exchange, just a remarkably hassle-free transaction ! Unacceptable* !!!

Fleet update. Disco. Gave it a wash. Am now trying to dry out the carpets. They are completely sodden after weeks of rain.

On Friday, the Sirion had a new exhaust.

The old one vomited out its contents.

Today is an amazing day. Several hours of dry weather! Sirion also got a wash.

Rear arches are going again. Glad I didn't waste too much time on last year's bodgery!

2CV was going to come out, but then it started hoofing it down. Oh well.

Perhaps these two facts are not unrelated.

To do it properly, you'd have to pull off those plastic panels and cut back to good metal, before welding new stuff in. I opted instead to slap a load of rust converter everywhere, before a few coats of paint. Better than nothing, but it was always a short-term bodge.

Went up to see my lancer today (being used by my mum at the moment). Looking very sorry for itself and could do with a good wash and service. Just ordered some brake pads for it so given that I've owned this 4 years now I've had to do sod all to it. I am playing cambelt roulette at the moment though so do need to sort that asap. Really would like to take it to the shite wales meet. Just need persuading.

Take it to Shitefest Wales.

There, that's my bit done.
