I hope I wasn't too instrumental in the above decision Tiff? Not sure that I could handle that responsibility!

:-)

Well...

It did make me kinda realise I've given up everything I enjoy doing because I'm always bloody at work, even when I'm at home in bed, just in case some numpty gets a puncture/ doesn't know what a jack is for/ someone has no friends/neighbours with jump leads, or someone has no idea a diesel car won't run with a tank full of petrol...  Loved the job but it's turning into a crutch for stupid/tight people. Time to leave quietly before I lose my restraint, with a breaker bar in hand. Wibble. Mind you the RAC etc sound worse!

This year I intend on spending more time on the West coast of Scotland, drinking more, and generally doing stuff...and hopefully my phone won't ring anywhere near as much, and when it does, I'll not be halfway out the door with one boot on before I realise its some PPI twat..

So really you did me an extra  huge favour! :)

I don't look for them, they just sort of find me now.

Described as low mileage with a bright orange (Paprika, maybe?) interior and located in Selkirk.  No idea if it's for sale or not.  Looks a bit bad there but might actually be okay, tricky to know without being able to see the sills and we all know how bad white paint can make rust staining look... and how honest it can be.

I'll keep you all posted on this one.

My Dad lives in Selkirk and I used to live around the corner from there about 15 years ago and I'm pretty sure it was there then. I've papped it before and it's really rough.

I'll be there again on the 8th of February and I can have a closer look if you like although it is an a yard of sorts.

It's because they went bust, and as a consequence there are potential difficulties regarding parts sourcing etc. Diesel ones retain their value a lot better than petrol ones.

Locally there's a turquoise 9-5 Aero estate that's properly cared for - even has the plate S95AAB. It's had a for sale sign in the window for absolutely ages (a good A4 sheet of printed text), but the guy just can't get rid of it. It's no surprise, really. Not sure of the price though.

That's not really relevant. That doesn't explain why elderly 96s and 95s are generally worth buttons. They're lovely cars, though I've only driven a two-stroke one. Best column change ever, so glad you got yours sorted Jim!

If you're ever in the area or I'm in it for some reason at an event, you're welcome to have a go.  Supposedly the V4s aren't as balanced and a little more nose heavy, but it flies round corners and you can keep the momentum going like in an A series.

I bought these on eBay:

post-17021-0-20355400-1390396189_thumb.jpg

It's a Blaupunkt Hamburg and that buttons affair underneath is a KV900 shortwave adaptor. The radio doesn't work, it lights up and crackles but is very very quiet. I will have to repair the radio before I can test the shortwave adaptor, which, like the radio, is presumably still set to 6v.

Shade under thirty quid including next day courier which is expensive for an eBay impulse bought broken radio, but what a lovely thing!

Lovely! The high spec 70's Ford's came with a Blaupunkt Hamburg but it looks different to yours, obviously the Ford ones are a later model. Does yours have the 6 pin plug in the back?.

Posted

No, just individual wires poking out of the case. Judging from old catalogues I've found online, it's early 60s.

^^^ That wireless really is lovely.

Spent the day morning of my one day off in the last 2 weeks pissing about in Warrington. The wife has decided the exact make and model of caravan she wants and of course they are few and far between. What we have seen so far have been shite and knocked about.

One in Warrington, looked lovely and cared for with a few optional extras fitted. Price was right but.... Oh dear one wall was all nice and spongy with damp, quite an extensive patch too :(

Then we went to the Hell on Earth that is Ikea for some specific storage cubes to discover they dont make or sell them any more.

Then I went to Martin Dawes to buy an optical cable for the speaker box - I need one about 30cm long, the shortest they had was ten times that for £25 to whit I replied fuck that for a game of soldiers.

Now just spent the last hour cutting out 25 cardboard boomerangs - dont ask.

Bit boring for most of you but my daily passed it's mot this afternoon, just 2 advisorys, one for a drop link and one for a slight buckle on 1 of my poxy alloys, you can just see it in this photo, It's the Civic turn next month, that will be a bit more interesting.

#trig - always a nice feeling to get a new ticket!

I spent most of the day blasting the doors and bonnet and front panel of a Bedford Van for a customer, used recycled glass grit and it came up rather well.

Then I adjusted the brakes on the 88", reattached the glow plugs, bodged a 'fuse' out of a paperclip (mental note - get some new blade fuses), greased the prop shaft and prop shaft nipples and the UJ nipples, reattached the sill trim, freed up the heater valve,

Last night - met dome, aka Brian and had a good butchers at his XJ6 - looks like a deal is done! hurrah, a new Luxobarge - now, better cut the fleet back before the 'finance director' gets wind!

The Hamburg lives!

Bit of light fiddling got the radio going, and it turns out the shortwave adaptor was set to 12v (against the radio's 6v) which might be why the seller/previous owner couldn't get anything out of it. To change the adaptor's polarity and voltage it must be removed from its case and the three wires below re-configured to suit. Fortunately someone's put the manual online.

Once I'd got it connected to the radio it worked right away, and with a bit of old wire for an antenna it instantly started picking up someone yelling in an unintelligible foreign language. That's shortwave alright! I must find a decent aerial for it.

It's taken less than 2 months to get this far too! He's made a thread on the Renault forum after i said that he should show people the photos of it.

It looks like some late 1990's Vauxhall engine lovers have been tagging the area round that unit, Trigger. I wonder if the Ecotech Massive are harder than the 8V posse they replaced?

In other news I taxed (wasting just over three weeks) my newly MOT'd Corsa B today to compliment it's full MOT, even gave it a £3.70 jet wash to celebrate. It drives as you'd imagine a 3 banger Corsa would, but should be ace on fuel if it's like my lad's Corsa C with the same engine.

It's a real mingebag affair: no central locking, no power steering and no wheel trims, just wheel centres. The only option ticked I can see is the metallic paint.

^ +1 on the renault rescue. Makes me feel a bit better about the pug 504, more of which anon.

Mrs Beard has just opened and read the bank statement for last month.

I am officially in the shit/spare room.

Trying to sneak the parts and repair bills for my beloved old shite is now busted.

Spotted on the AS facebook page:

Hoppers Auto Breakers, Aston, Birmingham. Come on.. £250

Thanks to skattrd, I now have a brace of Ponys (Ponies?). This one isn't actually in bad nick really and seems to run pretty sweetly. No A-frame shenanigans this time though, even though I did take it with me. Me old mucka Joncedric will be transporting it to Ratdat acres as he's got to come over and fetch some engines from me anyway. I had a last minute change of heart and called him as the brakes seemed to be binding a bit on the Pony which might have caused some grief, especially as I would have been dragging it through a busy urban area. Mega WIN though all round! Now I've definately got enough bits to bash together one really good Pony.

In other news, the Prairie has got new plugs and leads which has banished it's misfire completely. It flies now!

I love those pony pickups there was a guy near me had one one white wheelers and it was da bomb.

Trig - I love the that Renault. My Uncle in Syria had one of these in the late 90s, he was a manager at the Sheraton. I always thought they were the posher versions compared to the Dacia version of those that were also doing the rounds in Syria at the time.

Anyway, car news - I have some, how about that. Micra has been paid for and brought back, it has the £25 OEM exhaust fitted to it, so its noticeably quieter. Coolant has been changed, new wiper motor fitted and the gear linkage has been investigated, turns out there isn't a spring that centralises the gear stick in neutral, it's done through a plethora of rubber bushes and whatnot. The gear no longer rattles in 5th but there is a very tiny vibration in 3rd and now the non centralisation has changed to the other side.

I give up on this car now, I really do.
