Sunnitrac Dog-Salad Ditch Finder 2000 : You have done your job, now GTF off the OSR of my car.

I hate not having the money to get decent tyres for my car. Had to do something though - the local po-po appear to have a significant lob-on for roadside checks at the moment. Not that finding trivial faults with people's cars is at all easier than arresting scum bags* and then getting reamed by the CPS**, oh no. Not at all.

I need to find an Audi estate like that

That Audi would be £1195 near me 'because AUDI'S are quality car's*** and hold there money'

*Every Daily Mail stand-first since 1977.

**Standard GMP excuse part 101a.

**Results and grammar may vary.

Also, why do people blank their number plates?

Also, why do people blank their number plates?

Well, if I knew the plates on stuboys car I could potentially go out, break into someones house and steal the keys to their £800 or so stock runabout mondeo (as it'll have an immobiliser so it's no good without they key) then get some number plates made up and sell this mondeo on the open market to someone willing to buy a car without a V5 for anything up to £700, and all I would have to do is burgle a house, steal a car and commit fraud to do it. Easy money!

If you were really bothered about identity theft you would drive down the street with them covered up. It could be to keep some degree of internet anonymity. I used to do it but now ICBA.

My disco had its reg covered on the gumtree advert. After I agreed a price with the buyer I asked for the reg so I could insure it before picking it up. Unusually for me, I did an hpi check only to find out it had been a cat d write off. He played dumb but I still wanted it so further haggling was invoked.

Today I have looked at two cars and bought neither. Tomorrow is another day though! Therefore, I can reveal no more in case I still buy one of them.

Oh and any purchasing would use up funds from my 'tax' savings pot. WCPGW?

I feel the need to commit to more details as I need group advice. The car in question is a 1973 Maxi 1500. The paint is hilariously bad - it's generally a few shades of blue, but it's pretty obvious that the tailgate was once red, and one rear door Sandglow. It has delicious baby poo vinyl seats and greenish carpet. It seems pretty solid bar one iffy looking seam along the nearside sill. It was Ziebarted when new. It clearly has a pretty bad water leak as the nearside carpets (front and rear) are sodden. Memories of our Mini...

It runs fairly well but needs a tune up. I had a glance at the points and there wasn't much meat on them - I'd probably go transistorised. Gears are all there and all quiet, clutch good, brakes a bit wooden (it had been sitting for three weeks, outside). There's no MOT (expired July) but it does have tax until December. Being a 1973 means it'll be free next year, but only from April IIRC?

Asking price is £400. I can't decide if this is a good idea or not. I have very little money.

Too much effort. When's my giro due? I want to go to Gregg's.

Got a call telling me my long awaited tyres I ordered in September for the coupe are now in stock.

Yay.

On the way home from work the auto box started slipping and flaring in 2nd gear, indicating immanent Honda auto box implosion.

Fucksticks.

Well at least I haven't paid for the tyres yet.....

@DW:  Buy it.  Ã‚£400 for a technicolour Maxi with trees for brakes, really, WCPGW.  If you don't like it, sell it to one of Autoshite's serial Maxi botherers.  I'm just going to assume we have several of them.

I could put Stuboy's number on my black mondeo, fill it with fuel and then drive away from the petrol station without paying.

I could also drive around London for a few days and not pay the congestion charge.

True but so could anyone else so minded who passes his car, sees it in a car park, lives in the next street etc.

If you're going to drive away from a petrol station you might as well have any old number plate that's not your own.

Well the latest viewer didn't buy the (now working Merc). He did however send a text to say he was on his way to view it, and another saying thanks but he's found another car. I really should explain how car buyers are supposed to act these days

Well, it's definitely bordering on cheap enough not to worry about. I would have bought it already if the Disco wasn't already eating money. The Maxi would fit nicely into the fleet - the Sirion is the only watertight car I own. The Disco and 2CV couldn't leak more if I removed their roofs.

DW, that Maxi sounds good for £400 if it doesn't need a lot for an MOT. Get it!

Yeah, the 16,000 page fap-thread demands it.

Moved a nice Mini this morning, it was probably a bit scene for some but had a nice back story, the bloke's late mother had bought it in 1996 as his 21st birthday present. As he put it "some people have pewtar tankards to remember their 21st... I've got a rusty old Mini". It was last on the road a decade ago, had some cool late '90s Mini show stickerz in it and the original Rover dealer plates. He was obviously in love with it and has genuine future plans to do it up for his kids.

Then had a SHIPLY job this afternoon, thus far my experience of SHIPLY jobs are that they can be a pain in the bottom, the vehicle in question is a petrol MG ZR with serious OMGHGF - so bad there's no compression so it won't start. Not a problem but the vendor couldn't find the keys... hour's wait for his mum to get home, who found them in 30 seconds. Made me chuckle anyway

Accord coupe? About 100k on the clock?

I wish I had been as well informed as you twosmoke, 120k on the clock, been the proud owner for about a month and a half.....

On the plus side, if I rag the arse off it 2nd doesn't slip, so it will cost me a fortune for a new box or a fortune in pez, either way I'm skint!

DW I've no love for the maxi's unlike some others on here, what could you get fixed on the disco with the 400 notes your going to spend?

MAD PROPS to euro car parts Stoke who uncomplainingly took back the incorrectly-supplied cam belt kit for wor lass's car (even though i'd bought it off the net) and allowed me to 'chop it in' against the right one.

Posted

@DW i would deffo consider getting it bought. It may sound selfish but I like reading your car threads and getting to grips with that maxi would be a great read.

Honey Badger, have you dipped the ATF, does it look horrible and brown or a nice red? Might be worth having a go at changing the fluid, get the proper Honda stuff from somewhere like Cox Motor Parts, try 3 litres first which will cover a box drain and cost about 30 quid. The torque converter holds about the same so usually best to wait a bit and change again.

Completed a 2 day induction course today so I'm now 100% trained Eddie Stobart driver. Got a uniform and everything.

..Well, Stobart ports, which is different to Eddie Stobart limited apparently.

As someone else in the trade, I'd be interested to know how you get on. You hear a lot about Stobart, it's knowing how much of it is lorry driver bullshit though. sounds like you'll be on skellies/boxes?

sounds pretty cheap to me..I would go for it.  Isn't it the autoshiter's way, rather than spend money you should be spending on fixing up your existing car, to simply buy another one? when you get fed up with it you can sell it to me

Yes, i'm a day driver on containers. There is much said about Stobarts, good and bad. All I can tell so far is they really like promoting their brand image! I'll let you know how I get on.

Posted

Having had two Stobart wagons under me tonight collecting containers i just hope your a damn sight better than them, from experience almost every Stobart driver I've come across at work can not line up for shit, I'll be lifting the container up and down on their trailer and they will just stand there staring at me expecting me to gantry my crane with a 30 ton box hanging inches from the back of their cab. It's bloody hard work sometimes!

I'm not rushing into Maxi ownership but may well make a follow-up phonecall today. I want to see if they've got the Wolzcrab running too. Tempted to attempt a very risky purchase of two cars, hope the Wolzcrab fetches coin and then hope it generates enough profit to pay my tax bill...

Not had much time to play with my old shitters or read the forum lately...

However, I did find some time to give my 740 the once over, as I will be taking it to Germany later this month and I need to make sure it gets me there and back without the involvement of a recovery truck.

No horrors were discovered, so I rewarded it by doing some work on the interior. Various bulbs were replaced, loose bits of trim tightened, sunroof drains cleaned, locks lubricated and seals freshened with silicone spray.

In a crescendo of productivity, the passenger seat was removed and taken apart to repair the unsightly, torn base that had been irritating me since I bought the thing. This was a major pain in the arse, and if you've never disassembled a car seat before I would strongly advise against it ! Anyway, the interior now looks very presentable and will be even better if I find the time to clean and feed the leather.

Checking when an oil change is next due, I realised that the old beast has done less than 1K miles this year, as opposed to 10K miles last year. It seems that I am driving it less and less, which usually means the time for a fleet change has arrived.

So if anyone needs a scruffy but solid old estate for their unsuccessful antiques business or to go dogging in, let me know ! A proper ad will appear on here and C&C sometime in early December.

Me either, I learned to drive and passed my test in one.

Heavy controls and a wrestler gearbox, but worst of all, thirsty.

Thirsty, thirsty sort of thirsty.

24 mpg is not good.

After the disappointment of finding the Cavalier's crusty chassis on sunday, I took a brave pill and put the Pug 205 in for MOT - it passed!
