It's been off the road for 12 long years, obviously it's the most rational thing to replace my Mk1 Golf that'd been off the road for 3 years.

Looks amazing, can't believe it was a free car ! Unless the underside is completely rotten, and considering the Princess knowledge you've accumulated over the last couple of years, I expect this to have an MoT before Christmas !

The plan?  Get it home and investigate for terminal issues.  If no terminal issues are found I'll clean the crap out of it, recommission it and get it back on the road as soon as possible.  It's got all the mod cons like power steering, halogen headlights and, possibly, a radio-cassette player with the FM band.

Cor, that is posh.

The usual blow by blow commentary and high resolution photos will be expected.

^^ WHS!

That new Princess look pretty good to me and seems like a totally ranional thing to acquire. It's already 800% better than the Golf by virtue of not being a Golf.

The Sierra keeps absorbing the abuse I seem to be throwing at the poor old thing these days.  Last week I reversed into the wall opposite my garage, but the towbar meant the wall bore the brunt rather than the car.  Yesterday I broke the driver’s door mirror trying to fold it in, even though they only have that ping back function (trouble is I knew this already so I was being a total mong).  And the radiator leak is getting even worse requiring weekly top-ups, but finding a reasonably priced replacement is proving a challenge.  K-seal is the shite fix obviously but I don’t wanna do that.  I’ll try and fix the door mirror in a shite way though using loads of gaffer tape, probably won’t work but I’ll give it a go.

It’s also now parked up on the road, hence trying to fold in the mirror, as the R8 I bought a few weeks back is under cover for the time being.  First impressions are mostly good.  Interior is well put together and in good nick in an almost pleasant shade of Prussian Blue, it’s nippy and handles well although the engine is a tappety fugger – 70k miles on the clock makes me a bit concerned as to why it clatters so much.  Oil level is on minimum so I may do an engine flush and oil change to see if that helps.  It has some rot on the arches but is otherwise pretty tidy, and a previous owner must have run it through a car wash with mega stiff bristles as there’s loads of scratches on the roof, boot lid and top of the front wings.  A good old cleaning and polishing session is due when I can be arsed.  The arches will need sorting as all four have got rot, serves me right for buying unseen!

For the Rover pervs it's still got the original dealer plates, NC Kerridge of Diss, and Rover mats.

Agreed. That is tasty.

Sorted the Golf's rad fan. Took it off, stiffer than a teenage lad reading Razzle. Sprayed some lube down it and test ran it on a bench (handy having a spare battery sitting around) and it seemed a lot better. Refitted it to the car, bridged the contacts, all was merry. Just to really make sure, took it for a test drive, left it ticking over, smooth as you like. Sorted! Also ordered a set of HT leads, so hopefully with those and new plugs, it'll stop playing silly buggers when it's damp. May even cure the slight misfire it has if I'm really lucky.

My dad had a rover just like that when I was about 12. He left the lights on one night so flattened the battery. We bump started it on my lunch hour from school then left it running to charge the battery. He forgot we'd left it running and I came back after school and it was siezed solid with a pool of coolant under the engine bay, obviously in the hours previous it had boiled over and ran dry. He put some water in it and got about 2 miles down the road before it properly expired.

One of the lassies in work has just bought a Renault Captur. It looks unpleasant.

Disco is sorted, thanks to my mate Dave and his big hammer. Outer wheel bearing was fine, but the inner one came out in many pieces. Utterly f*cked. In fact, it looks like the bit on the shaft may have spun when everything jammed up. Has made a huge difference to how it drives. Was getting a bit of wheel wobble when the nearside wheel hit a bump. No play discernible when you jacked it up though. I plan to go through the other three hubs when I get a chance, to make sure they're all greased up.

Also, I'm an idiot. This appeared on Ebay.

Serviced regularly apparently, MOT to January. I foolishly bid £100 for a laugh, even though it had a £200 BIN. Naturally, someone rather quicker than me hit the BIN! Can't say I'm after a Cavalier at the moment really, but it seemed a bit of a gift horse.

Well, I'm home.

All I can say is OMGHGF......

KIDDING!

2500 miles round Europe in a 120 thousand miler MGF, stuck in nose to tail traffic for 2 hours in Brussels, 100+ on the Autobahn for nearly an hour. Trickling through that London sightseeing. and NO steam, no coolant loss. not a squeak, rattle, leak or electrical mishap. Average MPG: 47.82

K series ROCK. MGF's ROCK.

You can even sleep in 'em. eat a  baguette in 'em. get a thumbs up from a Quattroporte driver.

What more do you want?

Decided I'd better cure some foibles on the 2CV before I got any more of 'those' looks from the other half.

First thing to investigate was the non-functioning main beam. I already knew that wiggling the wiring around the retro-fitted relay cured it temporarily, so had a look. Found it a bit tricky to find exactly where the problem was but after leaving the main beam on for a couple of seconds, one connection was getting very warm. That'll be it then! Took off the spade connector, fitted a new one (rather more neatly) and job's a good'un.

Then I thought I should check the alternator belt tension, as there was an occasional shriek. Found this a bit odd as a specialist had fitted a new belt in April. Turns out that the adjuster bolt and nut had fallen off and gone walkabouts! To be fair to the specialist, it doesn't help that the alternator casing has cracked here, but I've put a new bolt/nut on as best I can.

Disco has had a lengthy test drive and feels so much nicer after its wheel bearing change. Hopefully going greenlaning this weekend in Gloucestercestershire.

EDIT - forgot the Golf. A Wynns Hydraulic Lifter Treatment has stopped it clattering on start-up. Lovely and smooth now - will hopefully be even smoother when I fit new HT leads and plugs.

Does anybody know whether there's any science behind those 'treatments' ?

I've always discarded them as 'snake oils', thinking that they're little more than a small bottle of diesel that ends up thinning your engine oil a bit. Am I wrong ?

That's not a million miles from me. The garage has long gone, sadly.

Nope. ATF or paraffin works just as well. As does Diesel. All IMO of course in case any scientists come up with some proof.

I've just bought an Alpina front bumper for my 5 series. It's even the right colour. The next thing I've got my eye open for is a sports leather interior. There's a beige one for sale in Glasgow but, beige leather and grey carpets isn't going to be a great look.

Got a big box of bits through the post today, I now have two calipers and all mounting bits for xantia. I only need the yoke but will come in handy as spares.

Only downside is that weather forecast for tomorrow is rain :(

^^^  The Gowf did sound lovely and quiet at Malham.

You didn't hear it do a cold start then! I've no idea of the science behind it, but it does seem to work. Wonder how long for?

That Wynnes stuff has properly cured loads of ternimal sounding clattery tappet engines for me, my mk2 golf sounded like a car in gta2 that was going to explode, I got it for peanuts because of it. Wanged a dose of engine flush in, ran it round the block and it was perfect. Same goes for my mums MX5, but the T25 my pal bought to sell on took ages to sort itself out (He left it running at 3000rpm for about an hour, but it did work in the end.

Daily golf passed MOT yesterday, and today got stuck in 3rd gear. Managed to wrag it out by using THE FORCE but it doesn't feel right so it's new gearbox time, but by a stroke of luck, ten seconds after I got it out of 3rd, I get a message off some guy I bought some VW T25 bits off a while ago saying he had a red diesel golf in for breaking with a good gearbox if I want anything off it. Good timing, but I really don't fancy changing the bloody box.

The Autoshite solution would to simply avoid using third gear. There's plenty of others.

If it had more than 8.47 bhp I'd try it, but every gear in that thing is 100% required to even keep up with traffic. Hopefully it'll last until the fucknut painter has finished the van so I can run that to work while the golf is sat in pieces on the drive in pile of gearbox oil and broken dreams for a few weeks whilr I source 4 or 5 gearboxes until I get one that fits/works as seems to be the trend with anything I do at the moment

Had an interesting if not entirely productive evening!

Went to view this beige Allegro

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C423817

It was mentioned on the ebay tat thread a few days ago and only being fifty minutes away south of Pershore I thought it would be rude not to check it out.

It is being sold by a young lad who has a collection of Mini's, apparently his mum wont let him keep the car on the drive as she says it will look untidy. It is currently in a shipping container along the side of a Nursery (the Garden Centre type) in a lovely village between Pershore and Upton on Severn.

He gave me vague directions and following the map (satnav is broke) I set out, picking a friend up on the way. Long story short after driving around for ages we finally happened upon the sign for the Nursery and found it along a dark country lane. I had aimed to be there for seven thiry but it was ten past eight! I had also forgotten how quickly it gets dark and the nursery and container were in darkness. A shadowy figure appeared (the vendor) and showed me the car, in the back of the container. All I managed was a quick look with the torch. I am going back on Saturday during the day and we are going to get it out of the container.

The story of the car is that it was owned by a elderly gentleman in a village down the road and has been off the road since 1997. I don't know if 1997 was a watershed for taking cars off the road as my previous Maxi was took off the road in 1997 and my impending Maxi is the same!!

The advert does not actually mention this.

From what little I could see the engine bay is clean and the interior is okay apart from wear on the drivers seat. The car has only done 11,000 miles!

It is a 1500cc E series twin carb in L flavour and must be one of the last Allegro's as it is on a Y plate.

The suspension has gone down and the sub frame looks a little rusty, although not sure if that is just surface. I will hopefully have a proper poke on Saturday. The rest of the body looks and is apparently solid, although I could not get to much of it!

He paid £250 for it a few months ago. He is asking £400 but I don't think it is worth that with the time it has been off the road. Maybe if it had only been of the road for a few months!

I will see what I think after seeing it during the day and maybe offer £300 to £350!

I would like it if we can do a deal!
