Driving to work this morning I decided to lower the 405's drivers window to take in some of the crisp, Scottish air. Lower it did, then wouldn't go back up.

Spent my lunch hour dismantling a fragile old French door card and it's innards, found a detached wire at the motor end and soldered it back up. I didn't get my lunch.

Yeah 405 windows go weird with age. My old Exec estate used to lock and unlock the doors when the front drivers window went down.

I didn't even pass that the first time around, the instructor just chose a closer car...

Gold-coloured Xantia by any chance?  Good shout if so, I was semi-tempted but logistically it was too much hassle at the time.

Oh, very good - I recently read an extract from Coleman's Drive in the last issue of Classic Motoring Review. Might order myself up a copy, it makes localish journeys in useless old shite seem less daunting somehow...

Best of luck with the collection!

He did another jaunt much more recently in a Minor around Scotland, about which he also wrote a book.  Sadly he died in the car on the way back from the printer's so never saw it being sold.   I had a copy but gave it to the chap who now owns the Minor in question, thinking I would find another copy.   Predictably, I haven't.....

I believe the Chummy from the original book is kept at Beaulieu although I don't think it is on display.   In 2005 Mr Coleman lapped Silverstone in it.

Yesterday I had a clear driveway and took the opportunity to get the Reliant out, intending to go for a drive.  Fortunately I decided to do some 'check circuits' of the estate.   On the second one the engine faltered and then died.  I coasted in to a cul-de-sac and investigated.  Ignition and electrics were all fine and the carb jets were clear but I blasted them and the carb galleries with carb cleaner just in case.  It was a quite warm day and the car is prone to fuel vapour locking.  It does not respond to trying to restart with the throttle to the floor or indeed any degree of choke. With the internal engine cowling removed and the bonnet open it cooled sufficiently to restart after 20 minutes. I drove straight home and put it back in the garage, then went for a drive in a nice, reliable modern car :-D .  An electric fuel pump near the tank would cure the vapour locking problems. I'm just not fit enough to have the enthusiasm to install it.  When the cooler weather arrives I'll try to take the Reliant out more often.

Roads near me could me empty. The place is inhabited by old people who are seeing double.

I bent the rules somewhat and purposely left loads of time before the pre-booked MoT, in order to go home and attempt fixage.

Not quite there, but atleast the return pipe isn't leaking so much now. I'll do a proper job once I get the fail sheet. The leak and an unpleasant knocking are obvious points, hopefully that can be sorted by droplinks or something. Can't see much else needs doing TBH.

Otherwise a fine motor for a ton, and it's always good to meet up with barrett. Cheers old chap!

...and if it passes?

It did! The knocking was a loose anti-roll bar bracket, so an easy fix which the garage did on the spot as there was nowt else. Verbal advise on my bodge, so yeah I'll fix that eventually...

Time for a cuppa after all that excitement, and then a clean up of the communal driveway as the Xant dumped its load when I jacked up the wrong side earlier.

Congratulations! I didn't think it would be too bad. Sorry I was in a bit of a rush this morning, but I'm glad you got back safe and sound. Enjoy your WBOD experience

I believe we call that top bombing. Excellent.

My first BX had the strut returns bodged with short sections of copper pipe. Seemed to work.

I just viewed a house 300 miles away because of the magic that is the internet.  We have dubbed this house "deadhouse" because the previous owner died in it.  We've got to the point where we need to give houses names so we can keep track of them easier, street names weren't doing it for us.

On the face of things it's not a bad place, it's not a bad price (for the area), and meets our needs.  The only thing worth keeping is the parquet flooring in the hall, everything else is worn out to the point it cannot be freshened up, except for the dishwasher which will be ideal as an in-garage parts washer.

We're not getting hopes up on this one, we've been burned a couple of times, and it sports a flat roof extension that may be problematic.  If the offer is accepted it's survey time and hopefully we don't get a big fat EH-EEEEHHH like on the last house.  At least with this one the agent dealing with the property seems to have their head screwed on and there's no duplicituous owner to navigate.

Just.  Not in our favourite bit of it, but it's good enough.  I'm comfortable with good enough, much less scary a prospect than nice or desireable.

"The flat roof covering is reaching the end of its life", will most likely be in any report. Whilst this will be true, after all it is reaching the end of its life from the day it goes on, it's always a surprise to see it said about a perfectly serviceable roof.

Used some Gummi Pfledgestift to refresh door seals. Driver side has split. Oh well, nothing doing. And the nearly new tyres are cracking as well.
