Loved that car, saved it from Perth auctions where it was sitting forlorn in the corner, covered in dust with no wheeltrimz, flat tyres half an exhaust and a rusty tailgate, spent a few weeks getting it shipshape till it looked like this..

Should I get it back and start again? MOT history looks decent since I had it in 2011.

This bloody Ital Van won't go out of my mind, I've known the van since i was 14, 23 years ago!, I remember cleaning it up, sorting the old plumbers tools out in the back (which are still in there) and being taken home from work in it a few times late at night (with no tax or mot).

For years I've wanted to own the van purely for nostalgic reasons and now i have the opportunity too, but realistically it needs quite a bit of welding (mainly inner wing), all the mechanics going through which probably requires lots of parts which aren't easy to get hold of by now and all of which are things I'm not very good at, that mixed with lack of time with a baby due in 8 weeks and a 22 month old taking it all at the moment and my Rover being in the garage really makes it not a sensible thing to be doing at this present time.

But my heart says just buy it, it's "only" £800 which doesn't seems expensive, I'd probably even if i get my money back on it, I have permission from my wife to buy it and it be fantastic just to say I've saved it after all these years and to drive it a little bit before selling it on as frankly i have no use for a van anyway!.

I thought writing this all down would help me make my mind up but it's just made it worse!

Get it bought Trig. Does it need shitloads of welding? I assume not or you wouldnt be bothering with it. At 800 zloty I reckon you will make a good few groat on it and just imagine the mental beardies you will encounter when you come to sell it. Make sure you tell us all about them!!!!

Front of the inner wing is quite bad and to do it properly would involve taking a welded wing off (which is a bit bodged up with plod in itself ) but I think you could patch it up if you aren't going for perfect?.

The other side has a much smaller hole that's easier to plate, then there's a hole in the rear quarter.

And one in the sill.

But these don't bother me so much as I think they will be easier to patch up and fill over.

Isn't it behind the fusebox, behind the glovebox?

Those bits of sill might stop it getting an MoT but those front inner wings shouldn't.  Get it bought, patched up and used for a month or two just to say you have.  It's not an opportunity you'll get twice.

The way I look at it is

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT

At the end of the day look at it this way obviously it makes you happy in your head thinking about it, the mrs is good with the idea, have you thought of it this way it could be a way you can widen your skills base by learning to weld.

On the last shape Transit the visible (once you had turned the glove box upside down) fusebox hinged down to reveal a second fusebox, is the Focus the same?

everyones saying relay 6 ..no thats dipped beam.. then relay r13 i dont have 11 to 14 relay..

have to investigate the main one behind glovebox..

Trigger, your loaded, get it bought, there isn't that* much welding to do,something a trusted welder could sort quite easily I'm sure. There is less rot than sound bodywork, which makes it rare. They are fetching more than that in the same condition so its a no brainer.

Removed The Volvo's scuttle panel this morning - which was a surprisingly easy job, despite some initial doubts - in order to lubricate the windscreen wiper mechanism and to check the condition of the bulkhead. This is what I found:

As you can see, there was a lot of dirt (hardly surprising after 27 years), but there was no real debris such as leaves or twigs, and more importantly, no rust to be seen on either the bulkhead or the scuttle panel. All I needed to do was give everything a clean (with my trusty Miele vacuum cleaner!), splash a bit of Waxoyl around and lubricate the wiper mechanism in order to make things right for the next 27 years  8)

Flog off the Rover and get that Ital home, Trigger!

Roffle?

I will buck the trend and say don't buy the Ital Trigger. It needs a lot of work to get it to a standard you will be happy with. It needs a place to store and work on it that you haven't got and most importantly you have one little one and another on the way so priorities will change in the next few months. If you do buy it then it will become a major project that you will never find time to do. It will just sit in the nice warm garage whilst that lovely Rover has to sit outside dissolving. Ital vans were pretty crap when they were common so you won't be missing out on anything by not owning it, best to leave it as a memory rather than spoil it by actually driving the thing.

Moved house monday, started borrowing my neighbours wifi today (yes they do know).

Done a few* bits on this house already -

Rewired the feed to the upstairs lights as it vanishes halfway up the wall & they were all powered of the downstairs lights by a bodge in the stairlight switch. This also means I don't need the downstairs switch on for all the upstairs lights to work.

Added the two missing bricks to the outside walls were pipes have been added/removed - I can't see daylight under the bath now.

The utility room (single brick, no insulation old shed thing on the back) now has a door between it & the kitchen so the house is much warmer.

Replaced the thermostat for the heating as the old one was missing.

Fixing the leaking pipes under the bath.

Changed the shower switch for one that works.

Got rid of the elderberry tree growing 6" from the back wall.
Other small stuff like replacing two leaking bleed valves on radiatiors etc.

Still do to

Insulate the loft, that's this afternoon's job. I've got the insulation already just need to put it up there, currently there is about 3" of old stuff so it'll help the heating bills.

Two or three windows have funny hinges so the hinge side doesn't seal, I need to investigate these. That'll be the last thing to get the place ready for winter.

Fit a kitchen door, it's just missing.

Rewire - saving that for next year when it's warmer and lighter. I'll rewire the garage properly too. The whole house is on it's original 1960/70s red/black wires with proper fusewire in the fusebox.

Build a workbench in either the utility or garage to rebuild my Bonnie, probably utility as it's got a radiator so better for winter bike building.

Run a phone extension to the front room so I don't need the router in my bedroom when my broadband finally turns up.

Change the plugholes in the kitchen sinks, as the plugs are missing and it's easier to change the lot for £8 a sink than track down the missing parts. I've already got the bits for this too.

Fix the leak on the kitchen tap.

Add an outside tap, I've got one that's not plumbed in. Very handy.

Oh & things I've learnt.

You can get 6'6" doors in Saab saloons with the seats down, this surprised me when I found out it fitted.

Living next door to two bikers who run a custom HD workshop from home means I have a source of tools/internet etc while I sort mine out.

The kebab/pizza shop over the road is good but I'm trying to avoid living there as it'll cost too much and make me even fatter.

As it's disappeared from grimtree, should we assume you reacquired it? If so, well boughted!

Nope, not me. I've been away trying to source parts to fix the bash on the Polo. 3 scrappies and all I got was an indicator and a bumper bracket. Had to resort to Ebay for the rest. Prace bets on the wing arriving here unbashed..

I think the time may have come where owning big cars may be history for me. Don't need one, can't afford one. Hope it gets saved though- it was a cracker and the wife loved it, and pretty much claimed it for herself when we owned it. Had to buy her a Fiat Coupe to get it back!

Loft insulation is on the specials at Selco for this coming month

3 for 2 in Wilkos. Got enough to do the whole place for £100, it'll save me that in gas bills by spring.

^ This is some really solid, sensible advice !

You must therefore ignore it, and buy that Ital immediately.

If you have space, which is dry, just invest in it, and do one little bit at a time.

Kids and Babies grow up and in 15 years time you'll regret not buying it.

I agree.

It's a van, they were never good vans.

I had a van when I was poor, they are rubbish for kids, no windows no seats, hard ride.

It's already almost knackered, when you ignore it for another 5 years it aint going up in value.

Put the money in a trust fund, You can call it the van trust fund in case a worthy van turns up.
