Plus the saloon looks better than the hatch IMO, although the estate is a looker.

I'd love a 626 GC. Preferably with the brown or red interior.

New piston and seal kit arrived for the hyundai.

That'll explain why that piston wasn't keen to retract.

I had a mare trying to bleed it. Should have opened the bleed nipple when I was pushing the new piston in.

The article is twelve years old so I guess they thought better of building this beauty*

Yes, I think that ship has long sailed.

Citroen is dead really, and psa now a Chinese company with no interest in history. So there is little chance of anything resembling Citroen heritage being produced. Sad really as they missed the boat compared to fiat, vw and the mini.

Not sad at all! The 2CV will always be what it was, and won't be tainted by some fat, modern rip-off. All good I reckon.

The C3 Pluriel was a close as Citroen got, but it was about as practical as a deep sea diving suit made of Frijj.

A friend (son of a '70's car salesman), has just revealed that they have (somewhere) at home a BL promotional tape measure from the launch of the Allegro.

It's round and has the 'o' from an Allegro badge at the centre.

Pic for AS requested.

Surely it should be quartic rather than round?

In the brief period that I managed to be outside between rain showers today, I actually had a reasonably productive time.  I finally managed to get the locking wheel nuts / bolts off the C4 and the Toyota - the Toyota's came off with a 19mm rounded-bolt-extractor socket, and the C4's were removed in time-honoured Autoshite fashion using a lump hammer and a 20mm 12-point socket bought specially for the occasion.  So now I can finally get the fugging tyres changed over and the cars booked in for tests.

The silver Rover now has a full complement of stereo speakers.  It had no ICE in it at all when I bought it (I think it had quite an expensive install before and the previous owner took it all out).  The two rear speakers are 6" JBL units kindly provided by Stanky of this parish, and the driver's door has a budget 6" dual cone speaker that I bought from Halfrauds a while back.  Toonz are provided by a mechless Lidl-special head unit, which actually sounds OK (it's not going to win any competitions, but then it's a bit of a waste fitting a top-of-the-line stereo when it's going to be fighting a running battle with an L-series), but the front passenger door was silent and it was making the acoustics a bit weird.  Then I remembered I had a spare 4" coaxial speaker left over from the Movano (which only has one speaker fitted, directly above the driver's head), so I pulled the door card off and found that, while it was too small for the speaker hole, there was a bolt hole in the door perfectly placed to hang it from, and with two further holes drilled in the inner door skin and self-tappers fitted it's now securely in place.  It actually sounds surprisingly good for such a tiddly speaker, and it's nice to have the balance a bit more coherent.

I've been slowly trying to soundproof the car as well, as it is ridiculously noisy at speed at the moment (although admittedly a knackered rear wheel bearing isn't helping).  Ideally I need to quieten down the intake and exhaust, but the straight through exhaust is helping the power output and whilst replacing the cone air filter with a K&N free-flow panel filter wouldn't noticeably affect the power, the K&Ns are not cheap.  So I took out all the carpets in the boot and put down soundproofing foam, which has helped the racket from the back somewhat.  I think the rear strut braces (which run across the boot) are probably transmitting a fair bit of noise though, so I'm going to try covering them in pipe lagging to see if that helps at all.  I've run out of the foam for now, but I'm going to order some more in and do under the carpets in the front (especially round the front arches to try and reduce tyre noise a bit) and possibly inside the doors as well, as there's not a lot there apart from the moulded plastic of the door cards.

Then the Movano engine ran away and my run of fettling success was over.

The C3 Pluriel DS3 was a close as Citroen got,

FTFY, DS3s were directly competing with the 500/Bini surely?

As far as design goes I think Citroen looked to the 2CV for the original C3 design though, there's echoes of both in that design.

Also flippin' LOL at the fact it's called Evoque, if only they'd known.

So I'm contracting in Derby right. Was going to buy a house down here, but could not agree with wife exactly what I was looking for (actually ended up having a blazing row about it some weeks back)

Client has been saying "there's loads of work to be had, we've just got to get our client to turn proposals and quotes into purchase orders...must be 2 more years work ....etc etc "

Following the row, I agreed that I would try and get a contract nearer home for a short while. But not much moving in Northwest. A few leads but nothing at an hourly rate I'm interested in working for, any all decent leads seemed to go dead.

Anyway. Yesterday, we had a meeting.  All the contractors and all the permies and project and account manager. 2 of us are being asked to drop to 3 days a week (I'm one of them) and 2 are dropping to zero hours and in another team 2 contractors with years of experience are being replaced by 2 permies with no experience and technical qualifications in totally unrelated areas.

Yesterday Afternoon I contacted the 2 recruitment agencies of the 2 most decent leads that I thought had gone dead, plus I had another RC contact me about 2 other roles.

By Lunch time today I have one interview and the other 2 RC's can't see why I shouldn't have interviews for the roles they are attempting to recruit for.

The interview is 20 miles 25 mins each way from home instead of 110 miles and 3 hours each way

The other 2 are an hour in the morning and an hour and 20 mins in the evening, but at a higher hourly rate, so swings and roundabouts. Worst case I end up with  less money (£6 an hour less than now) but an easy commute and other worst case, I end up with significantly more money (£6 an hour more than now but an extra 1 plus in the car every day)

Either way I wouldn't have to live away from home midweek for the first time in 8 years.

I look forward to Monday and the interview for the 1st.

So Thursday evening, as I was finishing work, I was told that the zero hours guy is coming back in a couple of weeks, and I can 'probably) go back to 5 days.

Also been asked to attend an interview in a different part of the site on a different part of the same project for a different organisation (but hourly rate is £2.41 less). Given that it is still in Derby, I'm not sure I CBA.

So on Friday Morning I donned my old clothes and made my way to a scrap yard in Wrexham.

post-17612-0-67057800-1507445172_thumb.jpgpost-17612-0-25571300-1507445188_thumb.jpg post-17612-0-20386900-1507445206_thumb.jpg

The reg has been transferred to an Astra so can't see why it was scrapped, Given that it appeared to be in decent nick, but the Irish owner of the yard said they all had a go at doing donuts in it last week. It is the first Manual V6 (2.6) I've seen. It had a nice cloth sports interior. Which will now be subject to winter weather.

2 East Europeans removed a door for me, and it comes with glass, and all the trim for £35, and carried it to my car.

I am hoping the electric windows and central locking work. But there seems to be no wear on the trim so here's hoping.

Then I went to Ikea in Warrington for Swedish Meatballs, and change into my suit.

Then back to Bumper company, this time for an interview with 2 French Men to talk about how I can help them produce Bumpers for JLR.  I did my best. I await the final decision, but told the recruitment agency man that I REALLY want this contract as I'm sure it will force me to actually use my brain.

Got a call this morning from the other lady who loves by where my cars are parked. She is 80-odd and required my help covering her beloved Beige Talbot Camper van with some plastic sheeting she found in her shed.

She has the Camper van and a Mk3 Fiesta L both of which haven't moved for a number of years. She seems very attached to her van so wanted to cover it.

I set down and helped her cover van for which she then spent a good hour tying some string around it.

Meanwhile, the weather still seemed good so I decided to do this;

Peugeot 207 is a hire car for work on Monday.

The Sterling actually started! I filled the expansion tank so it wouldn't overheat and it ran and drove fine! Despite that there were a few more niggling problems. Most of the time Sterling OK but sometimes quite randomly it would start to run very roughly. Sometimes enough to stall itself.

Thankfully it would start up straight away. Also, the central locking no longer works.

At least I can move it now.

A Lexus barge is certainly a step up. Is it an early gold badged one?

A few months back my dad was at the local second hand 'mart' in town, and came across a box of old car tat, I've vaguely posted about it here before. Anyways tidying up my spare room to turn it into my 'study', I was sorting the box out to have some of the books on display.

Anyways, it's also a bit of a calling as to what I should maybe get as my next car...

post-19988-0-04224200-1507487477_thumb.jpg

Have always fancied one.

Ive also got workshop books for the Allegro and early 200's, and 4 copy's of the same book on Rover 800 electrics (to be used in conjunction with the Rover 800 electrics video program). And much more tat.

Anyone want a post proper post the stuff from the box?

I'm having serious thoughts about getting rid of the Dolomite. It actually makes me feel miserable every time I see it (which is quite often, as it's parked outside the living room window) when it should be making me grin. It's no closer to roadworthiness than when I got it, and I can't realistically see any progress being made in the near future.

On the one hand, I'd be gutted to get rid of it as I've wanted a Dolly since I was about 12, and I'll probably never be able to afford a good one in the future. On the other hand, it's wasting away when someone else could be enjoying it properly, and in all honesty I'm just not sure I'm cut out for pre-80s car ownership.

Posted

I've missed the thread on the Dolly if there is one, what is it that's getting you down about it?  General BL malaise, or something more specific?

Posted

Are you selling your one?

Not yet, I'm still enjoying it too much, in fact I'd go as far as saying that I love It, it's the only car I've had other than my old Mk3 Cortina that genuinely turns heads when you drive it and draws attention.

My Dolomite is unofficially for sale but I'll want proper money for It, £3995 ono. I never use it anymore and its too small now.

There isn't a thread, mainly because I've never really made any progress with it. It doesn't have any major issues, it just needs someone with the motivation to give it some fairly straight-forward attention, and use it for its intended purpose. Without veering into open-forum territory, I'm having to re-think a lot of 'life' stuff at the moment, and classic ownership is looking less and less practical.

Would sir be interested in expanding his BL portfolio?  ;-)

Does anyone know any good places to get spray paint custom made? Or does it cost a fortune? I presume I'll have to send something off for a colour match, as it seems ships don't do it...

Yes it's for a Hoover, I need several cans of Jonquil, and a few of Swedish green for various projects
