So is it a Safrane or an XM, or perhaps a 605?

In a rare fit of enthusiasm, I washed the Bluebird again.

Remarkably, I also set about cleaning the interior up a bit, then even vacuumed it out. Then I also vacuumed out the Proton. I'm not sure what is wrong with me.

Honda 'buyer' claims I'll have a deposit today or tomorrow. If there's nowt by 6pm tomorrow, then the Proton is getting SORNed and the Honda can come back on the road. Utterly pointless having it sitting around doing nowt. We'll see what happens, but I fear the Proton really needs to move on, so may re-initiate the ROFFLE.

July 2018 calendar shot if I do say so myself.....

I'm with Alcyone on this one. It's definitely a Datsun Violet. Could be a 160J.

Anyway, latest 2CV happenings. It broke!

Thanks. It's what my merc mechanic said last night when I collared him outside the neighbour's ML350.

Might I ask who your Merc mechanic is? Mrs S's Crossfire needs a little attention.

Yesterday, I fixed a thing.

I dismantled it without breaking it, identified what was wrong with it, rectified it, and put it back together again so that it works and everything.

I am very proud.

The thing was the windscreen washer pump on my mother's Clio.

It's mot time next week and, whilst the pump was audibly tying it's best, no screenwash was forthcoming such to please the mot man.

The washer bottle on these is under the scuttle, under a slab of plastic. Said plastic can only be removed after taking off a wiper arm. Annoyingly, the arm wouldn't budge from it's spindle so, since I couldn't be faffed going to Machine Mart to procure a wiper arm removalator, this was all the access I had:

Luckily, I have slender hands that belie my ham-fistedness. I yanked the pump out, assuming it, or the various tubes would be clogged with crap. But no, they blew through clean. Except for the bit where the two outputs (front and rear screens) come out the pump.

I cracked the two bits aparts and a tiny, unknown internal component went pinging across the drive. I figured this might be crucial, so I made some effort to find it. Here it is:

Although it seems improbable, it's function is to shuttle back and forth slightly, depending on water pressure, to stop water flowing to the rear screen when the front washers are operated, and vice versa. Why the two outflows aren't just kept completely separate is a question for a keener mind than mine.

I gambled that the rubbery bits on either end had swelled a bit or become corpulent in old age, or something, thus preventing flowage in any direction, at any time. So I sliced a bit off one end with a blunt Stanley knife.

I clipped it back together without snapping any tiny plastic lugs or anything.

Success!

I think for my next project, I will rebuild the auto trans in my Omega. I feel ready.

Pump runs one way for front windscreen, and in reverse for the rear windscreen. This causes the water to flow in different directions in the pump. The shuttle stops the wrong screen getting fluid and all the pressure to the right one.

Typically frog, needless stupidity to help it break for no good reason.

To be fair, it's how most washer pumps work on cars. ;)

Every car* I've owned with a rear washer has had a second pump for it.

Oh dear - I have bought another car !! my 1986 Lancer is suffering from serious tin worm issues and I dont want to sell it. So i've laid it up until I can find time to fix it. So what have I replaced it with??

a 1995 N reg Proton 1.5 saloon !!! I will post pictures as soon as but if anyone has a spare battery tray please get in touch as it's had serious battery leakage and rotted away. Inner wing is also bodged but if I cant find a section I can weld that.

A few minor issues but nowt I cant sort. MOT runs out January so that gives me a few months to fix the Lancer. Must say the 1.5 injection engine while the same as the Lancer (which is carb fed)  is much quicker and a lot more economical but it's not a Lancer and I prefer that... More to follow.

If you're on Facebook, join the Proton Owners Club UK. There's a chap on there who tends to have bits for sale.

I have never had a car with a rear washer. It's one less extravagance to worry about :-)

My W124 just had a splodge of silicone where the second pump should be.

Finally got the new rear springs for my 305 van. Told it would take 2 weeks, it ended up being 5. Excuse being that some of the workers were on holiday. Must have known when I ordered. Tested Springs. Would not recommend. I've been driving around with a totally knacked back axle, with a refurbed axle in the back waiting for springs, for five weeks. Grr!

They screwed up when I ordered front springs as well and had to redo them. Took four weeks instead of two. Should be in the grumpy thread? Probably.

But the good news is its getting put in this weekend. Yay! With a 2 inch lift. Going to look a bit odd until the front gets done in a couple of weeks but I don't care.

Did you get the Xantia VSX? I noticed it sold fof £515, which is a good price considering all the recent work it'd had done.

Sadly not. £515 completely worth it for the mad interior though.

No I've got something with leather!

A friend of mine has had his faithful 2005 Honda Accord flooded in Texas, where he lives, and has just learned his insurance won't pay out.  Because America, mostly.  Like me, he's a self-employed artist.  He's also one of those people that will help others at his own expense but is rubbish at accepting help.

The long and short of it is I want to try and find some way to help him save or replace the Honda in a way that he cannot say no to.  As for many of us, his car is really important for his independance and just generally getting shit done and, as for many of us, he simply doesn't have the spare cash lying around to replace it. Particularly so since you can imagine what's going to happen to the used car market in any area hit by Hurricane Harvey.

I've already passed on what little I know about how to dry out a flooded car and that while the chances of it surviving being under 10 feet of water are slim, there is a chance it can without him spending megabucks.  Of course, it's also entirely likely its fucked, he knows this, I know this.

Any ideas are welcome.  I'm already considering an art auction deal but I have to make sure he will at least accept cash before I even think about setting that sort of thing up.  I'm not going to force money/charity on someone if it's not what they want but at the same time I'm not about to see a friend suffer for the sake of some stupid pride.  Especially a friend that has been so selfless over the years I've known him.  Your suggestions are welcome, you guys often have useful ideas and being that we're all over the world there might even be someone nearer to/in Texas that has a more practical solution I can send his way so pride needn't come into it.

If left to dry out it might just work. Fluid changes will be a must. Luckily with Honda they don't tend to pack too much electronics in. If the electronics are frazzled, especially the body computer, I wonder if a ECU set from a UK car would fit?

Especially as our parts are often dirt cheap.
