Got offered an LS400 in exchange for the A4.

That hurt to decline.

I winced just reading that.

Aye, we can see you're new to selling cars. It's not sold until the cash is in your pocket and it's out of your sight...

Chucked a new battery on the O-mega. Hopefully the old battery had just deteriorated due to the car not being used much lately and there's no underlying charging issue.

While we were out my lad did the honours with the inaugural pez station shot.

Also discovered, whilst going through the history, I am only the third private owner. V5 says four former keepers, but two of them were Vauxhall and Carcraft.

Not sure why Carcraft would put their own name on the logbook. I didn't think dealers ever had to do that. They had it for about three months, I think.

Should it be a charging issue I have the correct 100 amp alternator here to replace

So that's why the Connect clicks and groans when starting.

And why the clock is losing hours each day?

Charging ok.

Surprised it starts at all with just 9.4 volts available. Goodness knows how low it falls whilst cranking. Jump leads now carried until a new acid-box is acquired. The battery has done 3 years, which is OK because it was a freebie; a time-expired U.P.S. gel type marked "unsuitable for vehicle use"

Expired UPS batteries being used in a car? Epic mingebaggery, well done!

Well, I got home around midnight with no dramas whatsoever, many thanks to Mr and Mrs SixCylinder again for top-class hospitality.

There's definitely some jobs to do but all very trivial stuff.  The front tyres are mismatched and the NS one is getting low on tread, plus it might have a very slow puncture so before it gets too bad I will get a decent set of fronts on it.  It needs a thoroughly good wash and polish to bring out the yellowness a bit more and a few touchups here and there, plus a couple of bits of interior trim sorting out.  The brakes are a tad mushy and could probably be sharper, although that's almost certainly an original feature, however I will give them a good once-over when I get time.  On a car of this price level, that's a ridiculously short job list!

The 1.4 goes well enough but definitely can't cash the cheques that the shouty exterior writes, it seems to be in rude health but for the first time ever on a car I am wondering about performamce modifications.  I do know someone who rallies a heavily modified ZR so might see what simple upgrades are available!

But really, take Chris up on his, unless you really want a pretty one. It is proven. Oil and filters changed recently (no idea on miles as the speedo is off most of the time), autobox is well behaved, I get 34mpg, the sunroof tilts and indeed, slides if you don't mind risking having your fingers bitten when closing it. I've put an MP3 CD/iPod (30pin) cable Sony stereo in it and replaced the injector seals, it's got leather, and it promotes a feeling of utter invincibility in the face of status-obsessed judgements and badly-parked idiots aside.

Despite a new car incoming I'd still been entertaining thoughts of acquiring it purely because of the many happy memories I've had in it :)

Transit minibus collected from PBK yesterday.

Slight FTP after putting petrol in as battery was completely flat but sorted by swapping over from the support vehicle.

Was running a bit rough, assumed battery but no change after swapping over to a decent one so had a look in the engine bay and found an air sensor with a broken wire, bodged back together again and seems much more betterer now. Loads more power.

Happy.

So Dave, what have you learned in the last two days and 600 miles to Edinburgh and back?

1) I am now completely cured of any desire whatsoever to own anything manufactured by Land Rover (final score: on hard shoulder - Disco 2, Disco 3, Freelander 2; on recovery wagon - Disco 3, Range Rover L322 with very dead suspension).
2) Isle of Man residents appear frightened of motorways and will not leave the middle lane for any reason whatsoever.
3) The Scotoshite Volvo Massiv are a great bunch of people; thank you David Fowler, Neil Purdom and John Purdom for a hilARYoose night out in Motherwell ("words you thought you'd never read, no. 725")

Well done Ghostrider, I didn't fancy your chances with that, sounds like you've come up trumps!

GSAmi rally at Tilford rural life centre. Obviously a bit late for you now, but a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

I managed to sneak in some work on the cortina today . Changed spark plugs, finished a little bit of wiring , got the dash binnacle connected and carpets fitted as my refurbed seats are now done.

As a reward the carb is now pissing out petrol from somewhere .

I was speaking to a guy at the rally who was interested in the X1/9. He worked in parts in a fiat dealership in the 1980's and said fiat were a nightmare to deal with and treated the dealers with contempt. He said they never sent the right part and wouldn't accept anything back for any reason. He said customer services never answered the phone, ever. They had shelves and shelves of brand new parts, panels, seats etc that they hadn't ordered and couldn't return. In the end he said the dealer switched franchise to Citroen who were lovely to deal with.

Oh, as a test, can anyone tell what's unusual about the GS engine here?

It works?

Ha, ha. I think they all worked there. The lump of metal and bracketry at the front should be a clue.

Actually, the water pump was a clue. WTF?

(Specifically, the direction of the belt for said pump. Water cooling obvious, and my first thought was Subaru swap, but...)
